  • Do you like to visit classic film locations? Do you like steam trains and their history? Classic black and white romantic movie 'Brief Encounter' - some location filming was done here at Carnforth Train Station which now is home to the Carnforth Heritage Centre. You can find out all about 'Brief Encounter' director David Lean and even watch the movie in its very own mini cinema in a room full of 1940s memorabilia. There is also an 'Age of Steam' Galleries exhibition where you can learn about the history of steam trains and how the stations operated. This is a free museum asking only for a donation and is well worth a stop if looking where to visit in the Lake District and what to do in the Lake District as it is situated just south.
A must visit in Lancashire if you are a film buff or a steam train enthusiast. On this visit we were lucky enough to see a classic steam train come through the station.

Next step up north is Carnforth Station and Heritage Center. it's free entry....it's where the 1945 film Brief Encounter was filmed, or the railway station scenes were filmed.

So this is the David Lean room with a
timeline of David Lean and his films. David Lean directed Brief Encounter of course.
The Beano - I used to have the Beano.
Long after that date I might add!
Mickey Mouse Ludo. SIAN - I didn't see that. ME - That's an old game name - Ludo. I used to have it for Christmas in a box of compendium games and I still don't know what ludo is! This is cool. They've got a little cinema room with 'Brief Encounter'
playing and they've got the old original cinema flip down seats
This is the bit that was filmed at the station because it said the buffet...
which I guess is the Refreshment Room here which is closed to the 27th of September as it happens!
This is a background to the heritage center volunteers and the work they've done to save this part of the train station really, because he said they were going to knock it down. Outside - they said they would going to knock it down.
SIAN - They were, but the volunteers came in.
They rounded up and got the funds.
They got volunteers. It's a nice little exhibit, nice little half hour stop off It's a nice little half hour stop off if you're heading to the Lake District or
    Morecambe.
A model of filming a scene from 'Brief Encounter'.
    A newspaper stand
Donation box 'We hope you'll consider a one pound donation'. We put a little bit more than that in
Well worth it just to stop and it's cool out here they've got the...
Look at the sign up there Sian.
    SIAN - That's a big one!
You can't go out that way.
    Got all the old suitcases...
    Age of Steam Galleries
    and exit.
It's a good half hour stop off if you're passing through but if you're really interested in the steam age and you are a film buff of the 1940s then there's a lot to, there is a lot to read and take in and you can spend considerably more than half hour here.
    So that was the
    Carnforth Heritage Centre, 'Brief Encounter'
    filming locations.
