  • This DIY video demonstrates how to disassemble, clean and lubricate a standard trailer type crank jack. This jack was very difficult to crank up due to a lack of lubrication and corrosion. Don't buy a new jack... fix your old one. Anyone can do it....

    I just came inside from re-lubing my trailer jack. This video saved me, because I needed to file the center pin a bit and would not have had the courage to take a file to my jack without this video! Thank you for posting this and keeping it up all these years! Yes, your cameraman needs to sober up, but the content is on point! Thank you again!

    Exactly what I needed. Yes camera views aren’t the greatest. Watched it 3 times. Took me like only minutes to do, even with the welded jack attached to utility trailer. Thank you!

    Thank you for the video. I can now fix my horse trailer jack so it doesn't take two people to crank it up!

    It's way easier to guide the shaft thru the hole when it's wound all the way up. Just a handy piece of info there. :)

    Very helpful video. Camera work could be better, but this is what I needed!

    I did the same but my jack is welded to the trailer itself. I wrapped a piece of coathanger through the hole on the shaft that holds the handle and used it as a guide to help align everything. The coat hanger was long enough it was easy enough to push it through the hole from underneath. Not all jacks come apart off the trailer.

    Great information (ya the camera man had too much coffee) but anyway - I'm going to rebuild mine for a project I'm working on. You should mention, on the better ones, there is a bearing at the top of the screw that needs to be cleaned and lubed when you rebuild them. It makes it turn so much easier.I'm going to use one of those jacks for an angle cylinder on my snowplow. I'm planning to incorporate a wiper motor on the end to turn it. It shouldn't take much power to turn the plow if I lift it up off the ground. The jack should have enough holding power for pushing snow if I make the mounts strong enough. These are rated at 5000 lbs. so it should work. Here we go...……..!

    In case anyone still wonders what to do after 8 years After you grease your threaded rod while it was extended out of the base tube, screw the rod back down into the lower tube until it is about 4" from the top. Now it will line up with the hole on the top half because not much slop when tubes are slide into each other. You should also remove both inner and outer bearings and washers and lube them up also prior to install if you have bearings like most good trailer cranks have. You can do this without removing the upper tube (3 to 4 bolts/nuts) from the trailer as long as the trailer tongue is lifted high enough to drop the corkscrew and lower tube out the bottom( maybe raise tongue an extra 24"). IF you don't find the bearings and washer on the threaded rod/corkscrew, it is stuck up inside the upper tube and maybe with a dowel or rubber mallet, you can get them to drop out. Don't make it any harder than it has to be. LUBE THEM BEARINGS!

    Correction! The washers on either side of the screw shaft top bearing do not spin. The bearing does all the spinning the washers only serve to support the bearing!

    What if the internal threads of the body is damaged? Should I replace with a new one but it's hard to find part like this nowadays.

    • @mrdiyguy123
      @mrdiyguy123  2 роки тому

      If threads are damaged in the "nut" or the "bolt" it would be very hard to find a replacement. I would wait for the jacks to go on sale and then replace it.

    So, do you jump in your truck and drive away holding the wheel with those gloves after a job like this.

    • @mrdiyguy123
      @mrdiyguy123  5 років тому +1

      No. The gloves were greasy and would likely result in a transfer of grease to the part of the steering wheel that comes in contact with the gloves.

    Greasing the outer tube is moronic. The only thing that did is attract dirt and moisture.
    Guys clean the tube with a wire brush and paint it done. You can lubricate the screw and remove rust. Thats it.

    • @mrdiyguy123
      @mrdiyguy123  5 років тому +1

      Seems like you may have missed my comments at 3:38 that acknowledge grease in that location is less critical. My driveway has an incline and try as I may to have the wheel chocks perfect, there is often a horizontal force on the jack leading to friction between inner and outer tube.
