How do you come up with and develop solo piano arrangements for a tune? I haven't seen anyone go into detail on this on UA-cam. I've actually never seen anyone go into detail on this at all outside of maybe stride.
KeyboardImprov I've seen that vid already and it was a godsend. Thanks for doing it. That being said, it stays at a pretty basic level. You and other pianists do more than that. How would suggest developing that style? Also, an unrelated question, how do you practice improv as a pianist, and what do you think about whole improvising?
Practicing improv is like practicing a language. You learn the words, then put them together into phrases and sentences, and then practice using them in conversation. In daily life, sometimes we say the same things over and over, and then sometimes we come up with new ways to express our thoughts and feelings. It's the same with piano improv. As for developing a style, and more complex arrangements, it's just a question of learning new techniques and then combining them on a tune. Not reinventing the wheel each time, although, yes, sometimes you play things you've never played before. The freshness lies in the context, just like in our daily interactions with people. Like right now :)
I love your channel. You really are the Bob Ross of jazz piano
Thanks Eli - that's a wonderful comment!
I've learned so much from your series and I really admire your playing. Please keep this series up!!@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453
Excellent arrangement. I'm currently transcribing Herbie Hancock's intro on the Lee Morgan version.
Thanks Brendan. Have fun with your transcribing - that's a wonderful intro. I love how he kind of floats over the groove!
Nice reference to Donna Lee! And that run from 5:58 - 6:36 is excellent. Inspiring, thanks!
Thanks for watching and noticing some of the details! It's interesting how the character of a tune's melody can give a direction for the solo.

Great question about an essential topic! Yes, I've made a video and here it is. Good luck! ua-cam.com/video/AfFHLfa4KXU/v-deo.html

KeyboardImprov This is actually a pretty helpful way of thinking about it.
Have fun exploring this.
