I've been fishing for king mackerel for 50+ years, much of that's been off the piers here in Florida. The stock hooks on the lure you're using don't hold fish on well, especially kings that don't have much flesh in their mouth. I usually change the hooks to Gamakatsu or Owner hooks, they're much sharper that the stock hooks that are on the lure your using.

I usually use a diving X-rap for kings but the lure you're using seems to get the kings to bite but those hooks have to go. You tube has videos on how to change the hooks, getting the split ring open enough to get the hook off requires some carful effort.
@@timallaire1 I’ve caught kings last couple of years on that same lure, idk why I had so much trouble this day. Maybe bc the kings were smaller? Definitely gonna look into changing the hooks tho just got some new lures in I’ll be ready for next time. Again appreciate the info!
it looks like you have about a foot of wire attached to leader. What number wire is it or lb weight...im assuming is single strand wire like Milan brand.. Also im looking to get a rod specifically for kingfish there at port a......should I stay under 9ft or go slightly longer to try and get the longest cast possible?

#40lb wire I was using an 8ft MH
if you had the option to go 9 or 9.5 for on rod would you do it or would you say the 8ft length is plenty? @@Eric_Castillo_Fishing
