I love red cabbage- your recipe is similar to mine which I got from my grandmother. I think I’m going to add this to my holiday dinner this year- you’ve whetted my appetite for it again!
My husband is German, born in Heidelberg, and we love German Red Cabbage and I make it quite often, especially at Christmas. My son requests it every holiday, especially Christmas, no matter what meat we have. I make mine a little different than you do. I use butter and I just put all the ingredients (cabbage, onions, apple, butter, bay leaves, ground cloves, black pepper) in the pot at the same time. I also use white vinegar and sugar, equal parts. We like the tangy sweet flavor.
I'm from Holland and love this recipe. I live in northern Colorado and this brings back memories from when I was a child eating at the table with my family. Thank you for sharing
Takes me back to my childhood, Anja, with my German grandmother. Rotkohl is delightful with Rouladen, but I love it with just about anything!🤗🤗 Thanks for sharing...❤❤❤❤
As another commenter mentioned, please don't have music when you're talking. You are soft spoken it's hard to hear you or can't hear at all. Such a fantastic recipe from an authentic German so it has to be good! 😀. Thanks again for your time and effort to bring it to us! Blessings.
Thank you for your input! When I uploaded the video I forgot to add music (meaning there were stretches with no sound at all) so I decided to upload music after the fact but UA-cam won't let me dial in the volume better. I guess I have learned to not make that "mistake" again 😌 ~ Anja
This was absolutely delicious! My husband and I would go to Leavenworth, WA occasionally and have this as a side dish and this was an exact match - the depth of flavor from the cloves and balsamic vinegar is amazing. Thank you for posting!!!
This recipe is almost similar to the dutch braised red cabbage (rodekool). However, in the Netherlands we use butter instead of "Gänseschmalz" (goose fat), we use cloves and bay leafs as well and we add cinnamon. In addition to the fine diced apple, I'd like to add apple cubes appr. 30 minutes before the end of the cooking time. We eat it with boiled potatoes and "Hachee", which is a stew based on onions and beef, seasoned with bay leaves, cloves, salt, pepper and a little white vinnegar and/or red wine.
No apple or sugar in my red cabbage . My mother was from the part of Germany that doesn't eat sweet red cabbage or use apples in it. I'm so thankful for that I like the bite of the vinager, onion, ect.
New subscriber! I made this cabbage tonight, it was so good! I have to say one of the best cabbage dishes I have ever had! I made your sour dough starter yesterday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it works out for me. Love your videos!
For me braised cabbage is the smell of Christmas! It’s interesting how there are subtle variations depending on where in Germany you come from! My Dad was originally from East Prussia (not even part of Germany any more), so our family variation is the same as yours but the acid comes from Lemmon juice, and there aren’t any cloves but Marjoram is added. I didn’t see you put in pepper, but I’m sure you must. My wife and I have caused a slight rift in the family by adding garlic, we think it’s an improvement, my brother thinks garlic in braised cabbage is a heresy, my Mum changes her tune depending on which one of us she is talking to😂. Oh, I forgot, a good nub of butter goes in at the end. Klaus
Ahhh, I love this video. Thank you for posting it. I just bought everything I need to make this and i got a very large cabbage so we will have this tonight and for Christmas as well. I make mine the same way. I first tried this out of the jar from the Aldi store around Christmas one year and liked it and then I tried to make it on my own and wow what a difference. I will always make this homemade from now on. It is a great add on to a meal and contains fairly inexpensive ingredients which is perfect. I love it 🍽 👍 🇩🇪 ❤
I am definitely going to try your recipe. I love this dish and anytime we go to our favorite German restaurant I always ask for a double portion. Yours looks very similar and I bet it’s pretty close to their recipe. I really like the way you have prepared it and thanks for the printable recipe. I rarely see anyone using Real Salt from Utah. So many people use sea salt that has been refined from the ocean. If you know anything about the ocean the water is contaminated with microscopic particles of plastic. Thanks for the video.
@@OurGabledHome my German grandma henny used to make it so delicious. I have to say. I followed your recipe. Everyone at the party loved it and said it tasted like grand mas. Thanks again.
Have you tried adding some apple juice, mulled wine spices or bayleaf, cloves and of course some redcurrant jam (or swedish lingonberries - cranberry jelly might also work) . It's really nice.
@@OurGabledHome I made this yesterday as a side with kielbasa. It was absolutely wonderful, and will be a regular in my diet from now on. I used avocado oil, as goose fat is rather expensive here in NYC. No matter, I loved it. I actually liked it better than the German style sauerkraut that I make.
I love your channel! I just returned from Germany and the Christmas markets. Such a magical time and place ❤️We had the most amazing Black Forest cake in Hinterzarten! Do you have a good recipe?

Ahh thank you so much for this! I tried this cabbage in Amana, IA and loved it. I always wanted to learn to make it.
Wonderful!
This looks so yummy, is it at medium heat in the beginning or low heat? I’m sure once you keep cooking it’s low or medium-low
Thank you!

Could you use apple cider vinegar? Especially given there are apples in it? Thanks!

Can I use cider vinegar instead of balsamic? IAM German girl my mom always made rottkraut w apple cider vinegar

Until cabbage is soft, up to 2 hours.

How sweet is that? I dont like sweet

My family loves this recipe but for some reason they are not fans of the apple.
You can absolutely omit the apple 👍
The music should be German (waltz?) and not Spanish/Andalusian!! 😂
Curious to know why you would use Spanish-sounding music for a German recipe. And BTW it's too loud. Your talking should be prominent, not the music.
Maybe because after 1492, the people in what is now Germany practically begged the Spanish Jews to resettle in Germany. Maybe she's a little Spanish by way of Al Andalusia and the music speaks to her roots. (Just musing.) 😂
Lovely music. Can’t wait to try recipe!
Sheesh! People DO like calm music, even if it's not recipe-centric 🤦😂
Idiot post.
