Actually, this is one of the most commonly used (and most efficient) ways to studying pieces of music. You focus on a passage, deconstruct it to its most basic form, and gradually add elements as you get more comfortable with the simple forms, until you are finally able to play the original passage :)
The fact that people seem to think this is a revolutionary idea in terms of music education just shows the dire situation of the guitar tutoring you've been exposed/exposed yourself to...

fingerpickin, you just kinda fall into it really. figure out some sort of rolling and repeating thing. its a whole other can of worms, fingerpicking can get crazy fast
It's pretty easy for a fingerstyle player to use a pick, the reverse is not at all true...it should be about what you're playing rather than what's comfortable. Have reasons for doing things! Lol you're welcome for that fortune cookie wisdom
Bill was born in West Virginia. He is a mountaineer. And a good singer. I must thank you for this cover and the respect.. GOD bless and keep you. I enjoyed your guitar work - bravo girl.....
I have used this song as one of my go-to noodling songs for years now, doing precisely what you're doing... just playing over the chords in as many interesting ways possible. The song was practically written for that type of practice/exercise. Great video, as usual.
This is one of my all time favorites. I hadn't heard that Bill Withers had passed😢 such a shame, music has lost lots of legends in recent weeks. Thank you Mary!! I'm still in the pre-song part of getting fingers to do things on the guitar but this is definitely one I will be working with on that.😎
Reminds me of many years ago when my son was only a few years old constantly tugging at my leg asking questions and talking to me and me answering him while jamming with friends. They all used to ask me how I did it. Listening to him, and talking to him and in general paying attention to him all while playing and singing in between. Guess you just get REALLY good at multitasking as a musician/parent. Great video Mary. Great song and a sad loss of the performer of a such an iconic song.
@@lofr8982 Well, no, because that would just be weird to say I'm attracted to my mom. Haha. What I meant was watching her talk and explain the process while still playing. Her mind appears to be near overload, but, she's doing and awesome job at it and I can relate. Mary is doing a great job! I know a few musicians who can teach, play, or sing, but, in no way can do any two of them at the same time. Just one at a time. My post was meant to be a complement to Mary.

Hi Mary. Enjoying your vids. I started finger style about 50 years ago, and never did learn to use a pick very well. It surprises a lot of people, and amuses my guitar teacher.
Good stuff! FWIW, the original chord changes have a G7 instead of a single note G in the walk up on the low E string. It's one of the many things that makes this such a great tune.
