Driving in Madeira (there are so many tunnels). It’s such a beautiful island

I was on day trip and the bus driver took us around the island. I was very lucky yo get a front row seat to be able to video this journey.

Hi, I'm from Madeira.
In the past people in this island lived very isolated, because the roads where long to go from one place to another. To go to S. Vicente from Funchal we had to go 7 am and returned in the afternoon. So the tunnels where made to facilitate and approximate the population.
We still have the old roads, that you can visit, but it's easier and more comfortable to use the tunnels. That's why we have so many tunnels.
I'm very happy that you enjoy our island
