    Great video, the answer to your doubts (track 2:10) is "200 Channel memory" bro. The item you got here is the same exact variant of the QYT 25 Watts 2 Way radio models, and the model you got here is a QYT KT-7900D, I know it from the buttons, they almost look like the QYT KT-8900D model but the buttons are different, this one is a KT-7900D variant which also has a 200 Channels memory.

    I have the brand x version of this radio. Bought it mainly for its 220 ability. It worked great on 220 for two months ,then slowly lost receive. rebooted and reprogramed and it worked for a day. Right now I use it on a linked system for transmit and have to listen to it on the 2 meter side.

    Thank you for posting this radio. I got one and it works and sounds great. I thought this radio had quad monitor so you can listen to more than one repeater or frequency. Mine does not and I hope I can find a way to listen to more than one frequency. Most radioes like this can move to any frequency in use.

      I have the QYT 7900D version, it monitors all the channels you program into the screen...at least mine does...can't hear anything on mine anymore only lasted 2 years and has already failed won't be getting a replacement radio, lost interest in amateur radio completely.

    In the United States of America, the US Military (US Government) operate from 225 Mhz to 400 Mhz. The majority of that is Military aircraft communications in the AM mode. But around 370-390mhz there are a lot of military bases that have P25 trunked radio systems operating. There are no civilian, personal or license free freqs in that band, so like you mentioned, for US hams it's a more of a tri-bander radio.

      I have the QYT 7900D. I thought it was a great radio but of course you get what you pay for mine has already died (lost audio completely) after only 2 years of very light occasional use, not impressed. Won't be replacing the radio with anything else, nothing I really need one for in the first place.
      Save your money buy a brand name radio like Yaesu, Kenwood, ICOM, etc. Skip these cheap Chinese piece of shit radios, they will quickly ruin your amateur radio interest because they don't work very well and don't last long.

I'm going to get one of these and will be mounted in my small cubby hole in front of my auto shifter. 4 bands under $100.00 I like. Hope it's not to bad to program with software. I have found that many of these Chinese radios have poor receivers. In addition overall receiver noise and squelch performance is poor as well. Showing power out good of course. I would recommend spending more time on receiver performance sensitivity on each band with a service monitor. Nice demo of the features. Thanks for the Video.

    • @TMS5100
      @TMS5100 7 років тому +3

      sensitivity is published in the manuals. i've got a bunch of expensive yaesu and expensive fancy icom and the chinese stuff holds up well. i also have a rohde & schwarz spectrum analyzer to verify FCC compliance... the cheap chinese stuff passes.

    • @tedlawrence1348
      @tedlawrence1348 7 років тому +1

      Very good! It would be nice to see the receiver performance demonstrated on a commercial service monitor.

    • @ryantoomey611
      @ryantoomey611 6 років тому

      The power out isn't that great either, at least not on the intended frequency you are transmitting on. It will look good on an ordinary power/SWR meter, but when viewed on a spectrum analyzer, about 25% of the power is on spurs and the second and third harmonics!

    • @pu5epx
      @pu5epx 5 років тому

      Found this about the Baofeng UV-5R, it transmits way better than receives; products like Wouxun are better. Especifically in 5R, disabling TDR, disabling save mode and reconfiguring squelch levels as an exponential series via CHiRP improves things a lot. But yeah, a radio with analog front-end, Chinese or not, is better at reception.

    How to determine appropriate firmware to use. I have something called "MS9" It is slow. I would like to get rid of all the memory wasting stuff and just load KODI on boot. Mine came with a full OS. I dunno if its 32 or 64bit, max mem, cpu, etc.

Unfortunately none , as far as I know, the main Japanese mobile radios do not support 1.25m. Please let me know if I am incorrect in that statement. How does this compare to the Baofeng UV-25X4 or the QYT KT-7900D? Which one is the best?
    Also, does this support cross-band repeat and simultaneous receiving of multiple bands, are the VFO's completely independent? For example, on the UV-5R the radio can only receive on one VFO at at a time, not on both simultaneously.
    Also, are the VFO's locked to one band only, in other words can you set more than one VFO to the same band, like have 4 different 2-meter frequencies at once or 4 different 70cm frequencies at once, or does each VFO have to be a separate band?

      That is called "Freebanding" and is illegal. Just because the frequency isn't busy in the area doesn't mean it is yours. I heard of a taxi company in the Untied States that got busted big time because they were using 2 meter ham frequencies so they wouldn't have to pay for a license from the FCC (it is illegal to use ham frequencies for business use). The cost of the fine was a lot higher then a license would have cost them.

    Havent figured something out about this radio. It seems to be auto intuitive as to whether a repeater is + or - and which offset is needed. HOWEVER....if you actually turn on the + or - and attempt to set the offset....well, it stops working. So ive been a bit perplexed as to how this is working then. Ive hit 4 local repeaters with no issues, but how is that possible if it isnt showing a proper offset?

    But why is your SWR so high into a dummy load? That throws off your power output measurements. With no disrespect intended if you want an accurate reading you use a Bird wattmeter with the appropriate slug and a 50 ohm Sinclair or equivalent dummy load.

      HamRadioConcepts :: I understand and I did not wish to sound ungrateful for the time and effort that you put into your reviews. It was just natural as an extra class especially to see above-average SWR indicating an incorrect power level. The fact that you were showing 17 Watts was because your SWR was high. At a minimum perhaps you could get a can dummy load. They are inexpensive and will give you generally a wonder One SWR up into the 440 band. You fill them with mineral oil. My way of testing is as I described. Generally on two meters you use a 2-foot interconnecting cable to your SWR bridge that should have a terminating load directly attached to it. You pick them up on eBay inexpensively. But that's okay. People get the idea. I'm amazed that this radio is so small and I'm concerned and puzzled that it got an FCC type acceptance when it covers the 350 disk 90 megahertz band when that is not an authorized fan for amateur or commercial.

      Don't waste your time, wait save the money and buy a brand name radio, these no-name Chinese radios give very lackluster results in both transmissions and lifespan. They'll just die or not work and there's no support for them at all, and the FCC actually says these Chinese radios are illegal to transmit on anyways, and its no wonder with the horrible quality they are, but the reason being is they can transmit on frequencies that aren't amateur radio frequencies but at the same time you as the owner/operator of the radio it is your responsibility to know what frequencies you are allowed to use.

    The sound of the relays clicking when you change bands is the low pass filters being changed.
    Your power measurements are somewhat useless as the swr is pretty high...... You would need to subtract the reverse power from the forward power to give you net power.

    How easy is it to program by hand for people like myself who don’t have a computer?

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 4 роки тому +1

      I just select the channel I want to use and input it into the A/B/C/D bank that shows on the screen...at least that's how I did mine not sure if these newer ones are the same but you hit the channel selector A/B/C/D till the arrow is pointing at that channel then just enter the frequency then go to the next one and enter a frequency, no programming needed. The menu is a really useless thing as it is with most radios unless you figure out the abbreviations and sub-menus which the book explains, and if you do repeater work, you'll definitely need to know the menus and sub-menus to be able to enter the offsets, tones, etc.
      I have the QYT version of the radio in the video and after 2 years mine has lost all audio, not impressed, but you get what you pay for, buy a cheap pile of shit radio you get a very short lifespan and terrible transmissions at times. I don't recommend these radios, and the FCC doesn't either. Save your money and buy a known brand such as ICOM, Kenwood, Yaesu, etc. skip these cheap Chinese radios.

    Thanks for a great review of that radio. I just acquired one from a recent silent key. I got the radio, power cord, mic and the programming cable. I went to Luiton website and downloaded the drivers and software they have on site, but what I was looking for was a PDF of the owners manual. I have done a google search and just can't seem to find one. Do you know how I could get a copy of a manual??? Thanks in advance. I have sub'd to your channel. The name here is Juddie and my call is WD8WV. Email good in QRZ.com

    Its technically illegal for I to operate this radio but I can own it and listen to different bands.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 4 роки тому

      Technically any radio is illegal to transmit on if you do not have the proper license to do so, and you are not using a frequency that is authorized by the FCC as an amateur radio frequency, some are only secondary frequencies, some only allow for morse code, etc. It is you as the owner/operator of the radio to know what channels you can transmit on within the limits of your license. Doesn't matter what brand the radio is, they are all capable of operating on non-amateur radio frequencies in some aspect...its up to you to know those frequencies and not to use them, or not transmit on them, you can listen but not transmit on frequencies not allowed amateur radio traffic.

I KNOW IT SUCKS BUT THERE IS PLENTY OF INFO ON YOU TUBE....AND CHIRP IS FREE! THESE CHINESE RADIOS WORK GREAT.

    Interesting radio, but I wish you could show it operating mobile. My experience with both Baofeng and Leixen radios is that they work great...until your car starts moving. That's when the quality of their receivers becomes suspect in my experience. They all perform great standing still, but they're meant to be mobile radios and hardly anyone on UA-cam tests them that way.

    At first you did not made nullinv of cross needles, second the power is correct on scale only into 50 Ohms ! On 1,4:1 SWR the scale does work and meter is nog showing correct power!

  • @michaelscoofield

    Power measurement with so high SWR is completely inaccurate! Power meter shows correctly only into proper matched load... this your test says nothing.

      Forward power is forward power. He is going into a dummy load at that point I believe.

    • @petrok1rp254
      @petrok1rp254 3 роки тому

      @@johnlagreca6288 Simply not! Please read some basic physics. The power is detected by power meter wrongly (inaccurate value indicated) as it is not matched properly... If you will load it with different impedance then you will read different power on the meter > think about it why?

    • @johnlagreca6288
      @johnlagreca6288 3 роки тому

      Yes Petr, of course as the watt meter is most likely measuring by E^2/R and assuming R=50. The question really is if we are going into a purely resistive 50 Ohm dummy load why are we seeing reflected power.
      I am not familiar with the tool used here, but it appears the SWR is around 1.3-1.4:1. At 20 watts this would be about 0.5 watts reflected power which I don't see as a large factor in the power measurements reported in the video.
      We are not splitting hairs here, we are just trying to see if the output power is close to the manufacturer specifications. To say "your test says nothing" because of 2% error is quite an overstatement.
