Hmmm... Interesting. So think about this... I rock climb in my 4x4 truck. It is constantly pushed up against rock ledges, where I have to give it a lot of throttle to get it to climb up the flat ledge. This puts a immense amount of force on the front of the tire which in turn is pushing back against my hubs and bearings, almost exactly the same as here. I have 170k miles on my 4x4 and I've been off-roading it for over 10 years. It's literally climbed up tens of thousands of ledges like this over those years. I have the original from hubs and bearings. So how do you figure an occasional pull like this maybe once a year is going to mess up the hubs or bearings? If they jerked hard on it with some slack in the strap, I might agree with you, but this was a slow steady pull. From my experience working on vehicles and off-roading, I totally disagree that this would mess the hubs up or the bearings doing this on a rare occasion, nice and gentle as they did here.
@@Steven-gv1ke I think the real danger would be breaking the spoke in the rim. Are they designed to be so strong that a single spoke can support the weight of a car?
@@SwapPartLLC Are they so strong? Yes. Should you use the wheel as a towing device? No. There's a perfectly serviceable tow hook provided for that purpose.
You can. As long as you do it the right way. Don’t use a chain or toe rope. They make something called a Rim Sling that is designed for pulling cars by the rims. A lot of tow truck drivers use them
@@tncountryboy06 I disagree 100%. Drive wheel or no drive wheel, the weight of the other car (especially with extra resistance of it stuck in mud) will pull your wheel completely off its moorings. Think about it!!! And then you'll have two cars stuck in the middle of nowhere with no means of transport.
Control arms and cross members work as well, as long as you don't jerk on them hard. A light steady pull with the stuck vehicle assisting by giving it a little throttle will ensure the minimum force necessary is applied to any parts.
@@Steven-gv1ke more power to you, if you think that. But if you are attaching a tow strap to a suspension part, or a crossmember, you are just asking for damage to those parts...no matter how gently you pull. None of them are designed for that sort of stress. Same with attaching the strap to the bumper. That's why tow hooks are only attached to the frame.
I will point this out in regards to your comment. Say your brother gets stuck like they showed... So he calls a tow truck driver. They quoted him $230 to pull him out. You can either go buy a tow strap for $15 to $40 (depending on the size and rating), pull him out, and cut it off... I mean you just saved between $215 to $190 so who cares if you have to cut a significantly cheaper tow strap at that point. It's a way better deal than the tow truck fee.
@@Steven-gv1ke trying to "save" a couple hundred dollars on a tow truck... and doing what you and the video suggest... you and your brother better be prepared to spend up to five times as many dollars (if not even more), repairing the suspension parts you are going to ruin.🤦♂️
The idea behind this recommendation is to fasten the tow on a big spoke horizontal to ground. This way the first pull phase starts extremely mild. Btw if no hook is visible, chances are high, that there is a thick thread hole behind a tiny cover and there is a hook to be bolted in there.
@@floriandiefenthaler2553 The list of very important things one doesn't need to know to get a drivers licence astounds me. ALL vehicles are likely to require a 'tow' at some time. Did you yank on it? Or give it very aggressive throttle? All these things matter. I've seen people pull people out who are stuck nice and slow with nothing more than a strap attached to their bumper. Then I've seen people rip a bumper completely off because someone left slack in the strap and took off and attempted to jerk it out with a lot of speed and momentum. This is a bad idea. You can mess anything up when you start yanking hard on stuff. The key is to be gentle as they did here in this video.
