This story reminds me of a time when I was playing at a public golf course on a perfect summer day, and I was lucky enough to be paired with two women my age who could swing well and were nice to look at as well. I finished the front around even par, which was a good nine for me, and we get to the 10th tee, and we're told that a 4th will be joining us. The guy turns out to be a nightmare---talking constantly, giving me advice, etc. My game went to smash, and the thread with the ladies was lost. I was angry at myself for letting this guy get to me, but anyone who plays knows how disconcerting it can be when a new player is introduced to your group, mid-round. Don't be that guy.
Thats a good story like lannys story you dont come up to two guys and say im joining you for only the last 4 holes without even asking you dont do that. In the past when someones asked to join me and a friend of mine ive said im sorry but we havent seen each other in a long time and we would prefer to be just as too.
Ben Hogan, the LEGEND!!!
Can you imagine playing a round of golf with that MAN, I’m not convinced I would be able to stay standing up!
Tom Watson and Lanny played a round where Watson was spraying his drives all over the course. Lanny loaned Watson his back up driver. Watson won all 8 of his majors with that driver.
Is that really true? Given how driver tech changed throughout Tom's career that would be utterly amazing if true
A Toney Penna Mod1 driver.
Watson also holed his chip from the back of 17 at Pebble Beech with a 1958 Wilson Dynapowered wedge "borrowed" from David Graham.
Moral of the tale? Watch your clubs when Tom comes to visit!
Love Lanny! He’s so laid back and relatable
I love the story's about the old legends.
I hope you still have that check, what a awesome piece of memorabilia for you to have to remember that day playing golf with Ben Hogan. I'm jealous...😀
Love Lanny....always candid, and a gr8 player!!!!😊
Massive Understatement
that's a crazy good story. I tell you what, nothing is better than great golf stories. I have thousands to share too, and I am creating a registry of such.
Great story!
Cool story!
Lanny-- Great story!
Hogan-- Love his astute principle!
Need more of this
The late Ken Venturi said Hogan had the best course strategy but Nelson was the better ball striker, he should know he played with both many times.
Glen Garden CC's caddie program must have been pretty good.
Nelson was truly great.
I can believe it. That 45 year when he won 18 times he also averaged 68. He kind of invented the modern swing with steel shafts. I don't really like Hogan's it's too flat. He made it work, sort of like Trevino, by endless practice. Snead had the best natural swing of that generation.
can you imagine playing a drinking game where every time Lanny Wadkins says "no question" or "Billy-ray" you have to take a driink? You would be loaded in 2 minutes.
touche', except it wouldn't be Billy-Ray, it would be Billa-Ray...I love Wadkins commentary, but hate hearing him say Billa-Ray...btw, considering the lightweight I am I would be hammered 20 seconds, or 3 drinks, in
Awesome
If I were the anonymous bearded man, I would've asked to watch the match the rest of the way and tried to get Ben Hogan's autograph.
Lanny was a beast every year at the Buick open in grand blanc Michigan. Shocking that he never won a major

The hawk. Didn't suffer fools.
I get Hogan not liking that some guy crashed his skins game. But whats wrong with a beard and shorts?
Old school. Hogan was famously well-dressed out there.
What if he was a single player and the course marker told him he must make up a four-ball?
Then he should have driven up, apologized for intruding, and explained that the course marker requested that he join the group. That would have gone over much better than what occurred in the story. There is such a thing as good manners.
Love Mr Hogan. But now I am looking at my beard and feeling sad.
imagine knowing you were that guy and he tells this story.
In Germany you need a license to play golf. We definitely need that in the US!
We need a permission slip from the government to play golf? I think it is time for your 8th booster, "Jack"
@@jordan19862000 I agree it's extreme but I don't see the problem of slow play going away. Every where I go there 20 handicappers who act like they're on the PGA tour before they send another slice into no man's land. Something needs to wake these slow players up.
Excellent. Only vulgarians wear shorts on the course. Good to hear that the great Hogan agreed with me.
Ben Hogan, The HAWK - did not suffer fools.
One story true or false who would know? Mr Hogan asked his caddie how far to the flag. The caddie replied 175 or 176. Hogan said "make up your mind".
He must've wanted to join you because he had a swing thought or something and rushed out to the course to try it out??? I Really wonder why he wanted to join the group. Thanks
A gentleman's game, the ultimate boy's club (proper attire required.)
Absolutely. Vulgarians not welcome, and rightly so.
Beards? That is weird coming from a Catholic. Jesus had a beard. That would have been nice to see Hogan blasting Jesus for coming onto his golf course.
If Jesus grew up in the first half of the 20th century in Texas he probably would not have grown a beard.
@@patrickmorgan4006 Thanks Patrick.
@@patrickmorgan4006 He 100% would have grown a beard, he walked out the Torah. He would not have been a feminine, baby-faced man child, that is for sure.
Pretty full of yourself, weren’t you, Lanny.? That’s why I don’t like private clubs any more...
