Well, a lot of us are former believers (myself included). We've heard the "explanations" (excuses) for years, and can't believe that we accepted them for so long. Many of us former believers have also found so much peace & happiness after leaving religion that we want to help others find their way out. You should understand... Christians have been doing likewise for two millennia. And btw, when someone like William Lane Craig "explains" how genocide could be good and moral, we're done listening.
You're doing a great job here. What these theists frequently don't understand is that the presumption must be nothing more than what we can see and experience. Instead, they begin all of these questions but presuming a supernatural explanation. The conclusion is foregone. Honesty demands that we presume nothing beyond the natural UNTIL overwhelming evidence makes the supernatural apparent. We don't have anything approaching that -- as our friend's weak arguments so pathetically demonstrate.
I'm so annoyed by the camera from the side that Big Think and some others use and then I saw Mr. Deity do it! I'm like, WHAT THE?! He is *way* too stylish to do th.... "don't think"? OOOOOohhhhh! lmao XD
I love your stuff Mr. Deity. I also wonder how many people thought this was a sincere vid (those that don't know the Deity), got a couple minutes into it and said, "wait a minute..." After screaming at the video for a few minutes they probably calmed themselves down by tuning in to Fox & Friends....
I used to be an atheist, but I got a lot of headaches, but now as a Bible thumping Christian I'm cured. Mr. Deity your work is just so miss-understood, I was told you were being sarcastic and satirical, but in reality you're right...thinking is painful. 2 thumbs up!
OK so now I'm screwed. I watched the whole thing, then read the description box: "If you haven't seen the original, watch this first:..." I didn't. So now you're going to stone me for that? Sheeeeeeeezzzzzz. Capricious, alright.
"I cannot threaten anyone with hellfire." "All I can do is warn others of their danger." A man walks into an antique shop and approaches the owner. As he's walking towards the owner, the man pulls an old-fashioned lighter from his pocket. "Nice shop you've got here," the man says quietly. He opens the lighter and strikes a flame. "Be a shame if something happened to it." Every time you mention hellfire, you're the guy threatening to burn down my shop.
The really awesome thing about science is that in many instances, the egos of scientists is a useful thing; you can bet that when a new discovery is announced, many scientists would love nothing more than to prove their peers wrong. Eventually, though, the proof will have to be accepted. Good post.
Dear MrDeity, I must admit that at first i didn't believe in you, however i must concede that i now do believe. I mean , the amount of comments you answer, and all eloquently and courteously.. it's way beyond what is humanly possible. And, your video's are waaaaay better then any of your books/scripts :)
Mr. Deity shame on you- at this point today you got 69 dislikes from obvious Creationist...you should know better than present the actual truth in satire- LOL Jan 18, 2016
Yeah, that's totally true. "God" could also not be a personal being. Or could be a personal being, but who just sets things going and has no further role. To all of these, I say, what is the point? Like Deism, I can't care about a God who can't (or simply doesn't) care about me.
That's a pretty good point. But he won't be able to answer it. I blocked him because he wouldn't answer simple questions. You'll note, however, that I gave him at least three opportunities to have a respectful and genuine dialog. Instead, he felt that my honest question was a "trap." For future reference; if you feel trapped by a simple question, perhaps your way of thinking is not correct.
Oi! Como vai? I actually spent about six weeks in the missionary training center in Provo, Utah learning Portuguese before I bailed out to make records. That's all the Portuguese I remember. But it's truly a beautiful language -- my favorite to hear sung. Anyway, thanks for the great comment and kind words. Stay tuned and tubed!
Ok, I just heard about you on the Phil Ferguson show. I'm loving your channel! Subscribed! Keep up the wonderful work, I'm soo happy I heard about you! So far the torture video is my favorite, I was dying! 😂😂😂
Absolutely! There's just too much we don't know to start assuming a personal Being caused the Universe. Only desire can drive someone to assume such a thing.
If it were "apparent that His eternal rays bestow life and sustenance on all beings", we wouldn't be having this debate. To you, it's apparent. To Atheists like myself, it is absolutely not apparent. And furthermore, many Atheists are like me who used to think it apparent and now no longer do -- and for good reason. What you have is arguments. That's all. Arguments are not evidence, and what we need here for this extraordinary claim is extraordinary evidence.
So, take a moment and as many posts as you need here and give us number 3 -- "The creation arguments and evidence." Give us the best you've got, and let's see what you find so compelling. I'm sure all of us here would like to know.
And then you make us all laugh. Thank you for that! I do get angry because leaving my religion meant leaving everything I knew. It meant losing all my friends and alienating my family. It was very painful. I've been LESS angry for the past several years. I'm learning to let things go, but it still takes me longer than it does some people. That's why laughing is important. :D
Through a process of gradual change over billions of years. From small beginnings... Over the last 4 centuries we have continually discovered that the things which used to require "God's Hand" actually do not. Instead, we have found simple, natural mechanisms which remove God from the equation. These discoveries continue to add up. While the number of things presumed to be caused by supernatural intervention dwindles. Show me a naturalistic explanation overturned by a supernatural explanation.
This is such a great point! People make claims regarding a supernatural Being and then point to something entirely natural as evidence of said Being. Then, they claim that this NATURAL thing couldn't be unless there were SUPERNATURAL intervention. And when asked to demonstrate that it couldn't simply be a part of a natural process, they say, "Well how else can you explain it?" -- as though a lack of understanding is evidence of the supernatural. Supernatural claims require supernatural evidence.
Again, most of us are here BECAUSE we're done the research. We listened to our pastors, priests, bishops, etc... and found their arguments entirely lacking. It's not like we haven't heard your side, we just think you're wrong. And among the people who really know this stuff (biologists in particular), your view has been completely rejected. But we're still supposed to listen to you when you believe in a book written by people who didn't know anything about the way to world actually works? C'mon!
Actually, scientists interpret the data, theorize, and then test their theories -- with attempts to falsify (something religions NEVER do). Were evolution not a fact, numerous experiments would have falsified the theory by now. Indeed, all the experiments designed TO falsify the theory have failed to do so. So, for now, we accept the results of those experiments with an open mind and an understanding that all science is contingent upon the information we have at any given time.
I would submit that you still begin the reasoning process from an entirely different place. Simply believing in the supernatural sets us drastically apart in terms of where we begin. I don't believe in any magical force -- particularly one that can intervene and suspect the laws of the Universe. You can't believe in a supernatural God and say that Theists and Atheists begin from similar positions.
These are all very nice theories. Now go out a prove them -- and in particular, prove that they are correct in the very early Universe, before the current laws of physics came into effect. And, while you're at it, could you please discover the physical laws that were in effect in the very early Universe -- before the current laws applied. Your Nobel prize awaits!
Sweet. BTW: Been a subscriber/donor for about 2 years - what can I say. You're welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome ... keep up the good work! :)
"What ways can evolution be falsified?" Evolution has reached such high precision that more predictions can be made of what not to expect than are countable " When evidence that contradicts evolution is presented, how is it received?" It would cause a restructure of the present theory to one that conforms to all present data. Plenty of data has refined evolutionary theory to a amore accurate picture but nothing discovered has ever foregone the fundamental fact that evolution happens.
That's a good point. It's one of the reasons I really like Dawkins' "The Magic of Reality." It does a great job showing that. My step daughter became a little less religious going through confirmation classes -- especially when they tried to tell her that the Earth is only 6,000 years old. I doubt she'll ever go back after that crap.
THIS IS BEYOND SATIRE….THIS IS GREAT COMMENTARY. I JUST HAPPENED ON THIS WEB SITE A COUPLE HRS AGO AND I CAN'T GET ENOUGH. THE ONLY TROUBLE I SEE IS THE VERY PEOPLE HE'S TRYING TO ROAST IS THE IDIOTS THAT WON'T GET IT.
Thanks so much. I'm only a heck of a musician though. When I was more into it in my twenties, I made it all the way to "Oh my heck" of a musician. But I was still Mormon then.
Yes. Finally you are getting it! And the reason is because the "laws and precise calculation" that preside over man's existence appears when you look closely enough to be a self correcting mechanism. Your analogy is basically like saying that we can look at the water in a glass and say: "how fortunate that the glass should have the exact right shape to hold the water" where I would say: "look how the water takes shape after the glass"
I don't have to "believe" in electricity. We can do experiments where time and time again, we get the results that correspond with the predictions made by the "theory" of electricity. There are no experiments we can do with God where we get the same results over and over again. In the New Testament, Jesus says that 3 gathered in his name can ask for anything and they will get it. This has been tried and failed. We can demonstrate electricity. We cannot demonstrate God. All you have is argument.

Or, do you simply believe Joseph Smith and L. Ron Hubbard when they make wild claims too?
You do come across as even-tempered, which is awesome and much better than I could do. But are you SURE you NEVER get angry. :) BTW, when I trim my atheist activist subs, you always make the short list because of your calm demeanor. Thanks for that.
Mr. D, I have a question about this whole banana thing. I've got another thing that fits nicely in my right hand, but Christians tell me that THAT thing should NOT be gripped in the right hand EVER, or I'll go to hell, right after I go blind. If something fits my right hand, can I put it in that hand or not? I look forward to getting your divine guidance on this one.
Hey, that sounds like a good analogy for proponents of Creationism! :) Out of curiosity, what is it you have concluded based on your research and reading about evolution that has you convinced that evolution is false? And what do you believe instead?
Well, just so you know. I don't get angry at all, and I'm always here to hear your critiques. And... I don't think Christians don't think. I think Christians and Atheists begin the reasoning process from very different places, which leads to very different conclusions. It's all about the premise.

I've met numerous Christians like him, and I have great respect for their honesty, though obviously, we disagree on the bigger questions.
I don't any longer -- not with this guy. I just found out that he thinks "Answers in Genesis" is a reputable site for confounding evolution. He's officially crossed over into nutdom.
Well, since you're clearly not up on your archaeology, there never was a Moses, nor were Hebrews enslaved en masse in Egypt, nor was there an Exodus and Conquest. These stories are completely myth, as is the God they (and you) recommend.
I suggest you read "The Greatest Show on Earth" by Richard Dawkins. Evolution is not only science, is is hard science, with evidence from fossils, dating, DNA, localization, all kinds of things. Evolution has nothing to do with philosophy and many religious people are evolutionists.
I'm actually going a bit further than that (further or farther?). I'm saying that the Universe might be completely uncaused. Causation is something which might completely break down and disappear at the moment of Creation. But, I'm fairly certain that an All-Knowing, All-Powerful, All-Good entity is not that Cause (just look around you), nor does it matter if such an entity exists in some supernatural realm. Supposing otherwise is merely wishful thinking.
"Suck it Comfort" sounds like the world's best soda -- just what you need at the end of hard day. That slogan also works if that's what you've decided to call your bodily fluids (which I have -- pun intended).
I think TheTurinturumbar was advocating a nice indica (or saliva, if you prefer). There are some really good blends as well. But I think a vaporizer filled with Purple Kush is probably your best bet.
I bow to your brilliance, Dalton.
A decade ago and it still holds up.
“We need biblically litetate voters.”
It's 2022, and Lauren Bobert actually said that.
The worst thing is, there are people who actually believe this. Poe's law in action.
We all know how dangerous cartoons can be?! Whoa whoa whoa now you've gone too far, sir.
You're doing a great job here. What these theists frequently don't understand is that the presumption must be nothing more than what we can see and experience. Damn that is a convincing argument. I don't want to tell my kids that we didn't ride on dinosaurs. It would be tragic.
4:10
That's an excellent point-especially now, after the Charlie Hebdo attack 2½ years later.
I love your stuff Mr. Deity.
I also wonder how many people thought this was a sincere vid (those that don't know the Deity), got a couple minutes into it and said, "wait a minute..."
After screaming at the video for a few minutes they probably calmed themselves down by tuning in to Fox & Friends....
Oh my Science!
This is so deity-damn funny :) .
I luv yer sense of humour.
I used to be an atheist, but I got a lot of headaches, but now as a Bible thumping Christian I'm cured. Mr. Deity your work is just so miss-understood, I was told you were being sarcastic and satirical, but in reality you're right...thinking is painful. 2 thumbs up!

This has to be one of my all-time, favorite comment responses. Absolutely brilliant!!!
Theological innovation. LOL!
"I cannot threaten anyone with hellfire." "All I can do is warn others of their danger."
A man walks into an antique shop and approaches the owner. As he's walking towards the owner, the man pulls an old-fashioned lighter from his pocket. "Nice shop you've got here," the man says quietly. He opens the lighter and strikes a flame. "Be a shame if something happened to it."
Every time you mention hellfire, you're the guy threatening to burn down my shop.
Unfortunately we now have further evidence of the danger of cartoons.
The really awesome thing about science is that in many instances, the egos of scientists is a useful thing; you can bet that when a new discovery is announced, many scientists would love nothing more than to prove their peers wrong. Eventually, though, the proof will have to be accepted.
Good post.
Brilliant.
Brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it? So beautiful. Should have sent poet...
im not sure what its called.. but is this what Bill Nye said? all in opposite?
Yeah, pretty much XD
Bill Nye Big think thats the original video
That's the perfect answer for everything theological. You've basically given The Perfect definition of faith. Well done.
Comfort's a Kiwi, not Australian
Dear MrDeity,

I LOVE the Thinking Atheist! Does Seth have the greatest voice ever, or what?
That's a pretty good point. But he won't be able to answer it. I blocked him because he wouldn't answer simple questions. You'll note, however, that I gave him at least three opportunities to have a respectful and genuine dialog. Instead, he felt that my honest question was a "trap." For future reference; if you feel trapped by a simple question, perhaps your way of thinking is not correct.
Ultimately, the argument of the theist is simply: I just don't believe anything could exist without God... except God, of course.

I am so shocked and pleased this was ever on Big Think. Good for them.
Absolutely! There's just too much we don't know to start assuming a personal Being caused the Universe. Only desire can drive someone to assume such a thing.
This dude is a germ that needs to be on display on cable tv. I'm thinking a 45 mins show on HBO Sunday nights at 10pm
Amazing, you are amazing, every chapter better than previous. Thanks!

I've always enjoyed the fact that a time traveler in Britain in the Dark Ages would probably only understand people swearing at him.

Thanks so much. That's so nice of you to say.
I love the bigthink parody! I love watching bigthink, i'd love to see more 'don'tthink''s. Cheers for yet another brilliant video.
Love the "don't think" tag, brilliant :)

I just got the "we all know how dangerous cartoons can be".. brilliant!

Hard to think anything could have topped the Chick-Fil-A promo, but this is just gold!
wow I like your writing, acting and your content. Keep up the good work.

What...your calling me a idiot?
I don't get it. All he said 'bout 'em baby eating atheists are 2!!!
Thanks so much. I'm only a heck of a musician though. When I was more into it in my twenties, I made it all the way to "Oh my heck" of a musician. But I was still Mormon then.
SQUID, BLEGH! This is great, well done!
That's awesome. What is that from?
Well played Mr. Diety, well played. I am a true believer now!
like the flintstones lol good one bro. love you and jesse and lucy since day 1. wait and that guy with the glasses

BTW, when I trim my atheist activist subs, you always make the short list because of your calm demeanor. Thanks for that.
Another great video!
But: When will the Deity be back?
Once again, true greatness..
Maybe your monitor need adjusting. The image looks fine on my scopes.
Mr. D,
I have a question about this whole banana thing.
Awesome. Let me know when you do.
Bless-ed be you among men. And please forgive me for the earlier smything.
I'm actually trying to work myself up to a series called "The God Distraction: I don't care if God exists, and neither should you." It would be a video series, but there would be a companion e-book. So, we'll see if I can get that done. Fingers crossed.
Which leads to absolutely no conclusion regarding the question of a personal, all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving God.
Brilliant Video! Love the "Big Think" spoof.
Over the course of this show, I have developed a very good relationship with a religious educator/philosopher in England (CartesianTheist here on UA-cam). But he is in fact rational and doesn't take the Bible literally. He believes in the fact of evolution (because he's educated on the subject and understands how science works). I've met numerous Christians like him, and I have great respect for their honesty, though obviously, we disagree on the bigger questions.
Looking on the like bar, you did break the Poe's law. Nice.
I love how many references you make to that guy with a banana
I'm actually going a bit further than that (further or farther?). I'm saying that the Universe might be completely uncaused. Causation is something which might completely break down and disappear at the moment of Creation. But, I'm fairly certain that an All-Knowing, All-Powerful, All-Good entity is not that Cause (just look around you), nor does it matter if such an entity exists in some supernatural realm. Dawkins endorsed you. Now I have to donate.
dude you are a freaking natural! i love this shit
That's hysterical!
"Suck it Comfort" sounds like the world's best soda -- just what you need at the end of hard day. That slogan also works if that's what you've decided to call your bodily fluids (which I have -- pun intended).
I only beg when I do an actually Mr. Deity episode. But I'm glad you like them so much. If it helps, please give me money! How's that?
Dude...holy shit you're funny. I really enjoyed this. Laughed out loud at the banana comment. ;) Suck it Comfort!
I think TheTurinturumbar was advocating a nice indica (or saliva, if you prefer). There are some really good blends as well. But I think a vaporizer filled with Purple Kush is probably your best bet.
Love your work - all the way from Oz ;-)
You forgot, Pi is not equal to 3.
BTW, great work u doing, keep it up
all praise to Mr. Deity almighty!
Wow you know so many details, praise be to you, do you know what type of desserts God likes?
