Maiden call: Ultra Large MSC Mia arrives direct from Colombo; 2 June 2020

On the evening of Tuesday 2nd June 2020, ultra large container ship MSC Mia makes her maiden call at the Port of Felixstowe. In the first part of this film. she is shown in the Harwich Approach Channel, and then entering harbour, greeted by a crowd at the Felixstowe Dock viewpoint.

I had to ask an expert! Essentially, it's down to the shipping line and the tug provider - lines usually ask for it, and the tug company sees what it can do. In Felixstowe, the best equipped tug is Svitzer Kent, which is FiFi1 equipped, but she is usually involved in large vessel towage. Svitzer Shotley is also fitted with fire monitors, not up to FiFi1 standard, and she can display if required.
The three FiFi (Fire Fighting) vessel classes define their firefighting equipment capabilities. FiFi 1 is the lowest category, and the minimum requirements include two monitors, one to two fire pumps and water pumping capacity of 10,569 gpm. The FiFi 2 rating requires two to four monitors, up to four fire pumps and total pumping capacity of 31,704 gpm. FiFi 3 vessels must have three to four monitors and two to four fire pumps capable of supplying a total 42,272 gpm.
Tugs are increasingly fitted with fire fighting equipment, especiallly with the increas in LNG shipping . . .
