New Money: Former NFL Player Says Mom Asked For $1M After He Was Drafted

  • [Originally aired 04.30.15] The NFL Draft is tonight and that means dozens of young men will become instant millionaires once their names are called, but many of them are already thousands and possibly millions in debt.
Roland Martin, host of NewsOne Now said, “When you see them walking across that stage dripping in diamonds, they’re already going to be driving Range Rovers and Benzs and they haven’t even signed a contract yet,” these “new money” millionaires will have already started their lucrative pro sports careers owing somebody a lot of money.
Former NFL player Phillip Buchanon knows all too well the story of “new money.” After being drafted to play in the NFL, Buchanan says his mother demanded $1 million for raising him.
Buchanon joined Martin Thursday on NewsOne Now to discuss his book, New Money: Staying Rich, and the financial burdens professional athletes face.

Dont worry, pay back sucks. When I leave his house on a visit I'm taking the batteries out the remote for the tv like they did me all the time to put in their ps2 n xbox controller's when they were young. They think im playing. Kobe Bryant said it best. Don’t spoil your family and shower them with money. Put them in a better position to succeed on their own. Open up the door of opportunity for them Instead of just handing out money, because it’ll create a sense of entitlement and resentment if one day the money stops flowing to them.

Kobe is a joke and loser! He married an underage, uneduacted and poor woman. Her family is poor. He chose to do for her loser family, put his family out of his house. Both of his parents are professionals (mom consultant, dad own business) they didn't need his money. He did for her family and nothing for his family. He treated them so horribly. That's why they didn't run to his trial.

Kobe did what The Book says, "leave your mother and father and become one!" I don't know how old Vanessa was, but he chose her. His obligation is to Vanessa. I don't know the particulars of the breakdown of the relationship between him and his parents, but when he took a wife, Kobe is to cling to her, and no longer to Joe and Pam! Period!

@@lmjackson1973 Exactly... it's this "son-husband" complex we have in the black community that needs to change. I saw one of those American talent shows, where they a little 5 year old saying that he hopes to become rich so that he can take care of his family. Smh. I doubt he came up with that on his own. He was more than likely coached or conditioned to say that through listening to his mother gripe about bills and struggling, something that I think should never be foisted on kids. Yet many single mothers do it, and many outright demand that their sons contribute and take care of them as if they were their husbands. They pressure these boys at early ages, as I saw with the 5 year old on that show. When I was 5, I think I wanted to be Superman. I didn't want to be rich so I could take care of my family. I never faced that pressure. I was free to dream and think like a kid.

Carlo Alberto I agree to a point what you're saying. But unfortunately the children of this generation. Are not appreciative of what we do as parents. It's sad when you have to remind your children to say thank you for helping them are getting them through a situation are buying what they need or buying their want.
I come from the era where you say thank you. Even if your parent bought you ice cream. You say thank you, this generation is unappreciative and not a generation of thank you. Yes, as a parent it is our job and duty to raise our children and to guide our children. To cover them with love.
Unfortunately there are thousands upon thousands of children in the foster care system. That when they were born into the this world. Their parents either looked away didn't want the child or took the child home only to abuse that child.
So what I'm saying is, there's various situations throughout parenting and being a mother as well as a father. Your blessed if you have children that love you and appreciate you.

How about this one woman who asked her son for a million dollars? She is not representative of us all. I have three sons and a daughter ( yes, all by one man) sacrificed to care for them myself because I didn't want them left with babysitters, they went to private schools all their lives and got a good education, I paid for their braces, glasses, college etc. I am NOT rich and I went without myself to make sure they were good. Guess what I want for that? I WANT TO SEE MY KIDS DO WELL!! That's it! And guess what else??? I know a lot of black women like me. its crazy how the people around you switch up when you got money. they ask for a hand out but when you tellem you cant do it they act like you betrayed them or left them hanging. and then they say YOU changed just because you got alot of money when thats really not the case. yea maybe you can help them out a little bit but you cant just retire your whole family unless you're talking billions. even billionaires have family members still working a 9-5 but they look out for them only to a certain extent because anything could happen. people will literally walk on a wealthy person's property and hurt themselves just to open up a lawsuit for money. and alot of people dont understand that rich people have bills too, they have mortgages, car notes, utilities, and a bunch of business expenses to pay for. at the end of the day, the IRS is not gonna feel sorry for you just because u gave all your money away to your poor family & friends. you gotta learn to say no sometimes...

The American school system is designed to educate children, so by the time they are finished with high school or college they can start earning a living/income. But the American education curriculum does not teach high school student about saving and managing money, and college does not teach money management unless you major in finance or economics. We have to learn so we can teach our children and love ones that we received training in school to get a job, and we should receive our education at home from our parents and extended families. There's a big difference between training and education. The American education system is designed to train you to have to get into debt. The home education system should educate you to be debt free.

Yup, I'm an engineer. That relatively "good" money can be gone in an instant if you don't budget and save. I live below my means. I remember from where I came.

Money management is simple. Save half of everything that you earn while you are playing professional sports, especially football, and live off the rest. Do not chase in behind the symbols of success. There is a myth perpetrated by the Diamond industry that diamonds are rare, and they rob silly people blind with it. Do not go out and father all of those children. I am amazed that these black guys can not learn from the mistakes that the guys who went before them made. It's like " I am black so I am supposed to do that" Bentley, bling- bling, baby mama, monstrosity of a house, opening a business ( football is your business, and it is paying off well, so put your money in the bank, and tell that scam artist who comes to you telling you to go play football, and let him'her take care of your money, to get the f#*k out of your face). Do not invest in anything. Mama gets her con in on children early, making them believe that they owe her something for rearing them. Actually daddy, unless mama selected some no good thug who hit it and quit it, is the one who put that roof over your head, kept food on the table, lights on, etc, but mama takes credit for it. If you love your parents , and want to provide for them that's excellent, but you do not owe it to them for rearing you.

So wise! This looks like an amazing book especially for athletes coming into new money, but also for any entrepreneur that may not have been born into any kind of wealth. We need age appropriate financial planning classes to be taught from primary school on up.

A mother is to be a support system. ...not a "you owe me"!! I don't believe in it. My son may never give me a dime...because he's not my GOD!!! I am of royalty on my knees praying always.
My son is a man...making his way in a difficult life.
We have children to love raise and charish.
God sustains me, loves me, provides, and protects me. Not the NFL or rich organizations.
HOME AND FAMILY SUPPORT....is a true loving family.
Jackie Chan the Asian actor...refused to give his inheritance to his son because. .....he said " my son is intelligent and can work to build his own rich life because he can do it."🌹❤

Your son owes you no money whatsoever - just unconditional love! He's not going to let you feel poverty again, but to demand a mil after he bought you a house(in which he will have to pay the taxes & utilities on, too!)- Now that's a C'mon Man!! This is his life to live!! For some one who is not used to having money - 100,000k in the bank account should be more than enough to get your hair done! And -real talk, are babies from low-income mothers(both black & white -see 30 for 30) looked upon as just tickets now?? - FOH!!!

That's the problem. He didn't buy investor houses. Like a duplex or 4 unit with tenants. Instead, He buys single family houses where his relatives live for little rent or no rent. The mindset of a business person is sorely missing.

That's what some of these Mother's do, especially the single low income Mom's. They can treat their boys badly when they're young, humiliate them, strip them of their "true" manhood......until they see potential for a career in the NFL or NBA. Then, they become "Momma's baby boy."
The now rich athlete is only glad to now receive the love from his Mother that he has always longed for, now that he is rich and has bought her a house and a regular salary. So, she is now this wonderful Mom that that he publically speaks of and kneels down to (along with the Lord 😏) whenever he scores a touchdown.

The cycle of black men in sports (especially college sports) doesn't endorse them to take advantage of their education. Black folks think money is what's gonna make us better people. It's not. Its self pride, education, and integrity. If you have all those things you figure out how to make a good life for yourself. But if you're a dummy. You'll just a temporarily rich dummy.

As disappointed and annoyed he may be towards his mother, he should have taken into consideration what it took for his mother to raise him from a baby up to that point of him being drafted and in the hood at that and especially if he's from a single parent household and therefore shouldn't come spewing to the whole world that his mother asked him for a million dollars. He absolutely didn't gained anything by saying such and worst yet, his mother getting insults and criticisms on this powerful medium. .
