Hey MsMojo the antihero in phantom of the opera is not the phantom, the antihero is actually Raoul because he threatened to kill the phantom who loves Christine, he also forced Christine to love him by singing to her and to reject The Who gave her fam and success as a singer and is the main reason why people love her and are inspired by her example in the phantom, and in the aftermath gave the phantom a scar cutting him with a sword and thought that Christine was suffering from bipolar disorder seeing dead people and ghosts that are not real.
Absolutely! He’s obviously a crooked type, but viewers can still kind of understand where he’s coming from. He doesn’t want to be taken advantage of and he wants what he thinks is best for his wife. I’m so glad that Hadestown doesn’t portray him as an outright villain since Hades already gets a bad rap among people who don’t have a thorough knowledge of Greek mythology.
I agree the Wizard can be a little bit of an anti-hero but I’d consider Morrible a straight up villain she’s probably the closest thing to a main antagonist in Wicked
Had to be Javert! He is such a compelling character and his solo songs are some of the best songs in musical history (Stars & Javert's Suicide). I absolutely love his duet with Valjean in the Confrontation (one of the best musical duets of all time) and he has a key role in One Day More that is one of my favorite parts of the song.
for once I’m not mad at ms mojo for its 1 pick, BUT I’m still upset that they didn’t even have the engineer from miss saigon, he was so interesting and hard role to play. aaron burr from hamilon also could have been a bit higher but at least he was there. ramses from the prince of egypt the musical shoulda even been there too! he was a man who abused his power so his father could be proud of him, and he ended up losing his son and the brother who was his best friend. but ngl javert deserves number 1 lmaooo
Because have you seen literally any musical or anyone above him? They're all completely *broken*, Burr's story was sad, but it's nothing compared to Juda's story, Javert's derailing or a heartbroken Phantom. Burr lived (Which is more than I can say for the people above him) on, even after the protagonists story ended he lived on.
Aaron Burr is my favorite character from Hamilton and some people don’t understand that and I’m just like, have you guys seen him and his musical performances are amazing.
Hades from Hadestown definitely belongs on this list. Patrick Page (Hades) does a fantastic job of explaining the character and his motivations during the panel the cast of Hadestown did at Google (starting at approx 22:40). I highly recommend watching that segment of the interview!
I was in a production of Into the Woods (Cinderella) and the Witch to me is one of the most incredible characters in all of broadway. You never realize the greatness of the Witch until you are in the Musical. Great Character!
i’m so happy w this list and to showcase that Javert isn’t a villain (The Thenardiers are the villains of Les Mis fight me). as for future reference, the Les Mis Dream Cast came out in 1995, not 1998!🤗
1) Elphaba and/or Glinda from Wicked; Evan Hansen from Dear Evan Hansen. 2) I would consider Alexander Hamilton an anti-hero, while Aaron Burr is more of an anti-villain. Sweeney Todd and the Phantom are also anti-villains, not anti-heroes.
- Benjamin Coffin III (RENT) - Pontius Pilate (Jesus Christ Superstar) - Gabe Goodman (Next to Normal) - Ted (Bonnie and Clyde) (yes im aware that only a handful of ppl know this show, but he still counts) also a lot of these characters have songs used in the "top 10 villian songs" video. just saying,,
I would argue that not only Ted, but also Bonnie and Clyde themselves could be. Especially Bonnie, who was (in the musical, at least) not happy with how she ended up. She was happy with Clyde, but both of them wanted to be famous for music, not what they became infamous for. But definitely Ted, yes!
@@kellharris2491 Jekyll is far from an innocent man. After all, Hyde is just Jekyll, having transformed his body into something unrecognizable, acting on unspecified urges that would be unseemly for someone of his age and social standing in Victorian London. And in the original story, Jekyll loved being Hyde. So no. Jekyll isn’t innocent. He and Hyde are the anti-heros, in both the book and the musical, and both of them are not innocent characters. I’m honestly sick of people who say that Jekyll is innocent, when in the novel, that was FAR from the truth.
Hooray! Finally, my Phantom is getting the antihero recognition he deserves. I've always thought he wasn't a complete villain because of being an outcast and relentlessly tormented by the public. I understood why Christine left him as she didn't feel safe with his dangerous, nigh obsessive, affection, but I never could condone that she left someone in need of help and love to face the trials of the police alone.
Carrie White from Carrie: The Musical. That’s a musical that gets overlooked a lot. Not only is she definitely an antihero, but it’s also one of the hardest female roles in musical theater. In fact, my local community theater has 2 Carries in their production because of the complexity of the role, and they never do anything like that.
Yes! I'm so happy you gave an honorable mention to Officer Lockstock, a true antihero. Another from the same show, I would argue, would be Ms. Pennywise. She's not a bad person at heart, just doing what she has to to protect her family, but that can come across in a very cold intimidating way. Even though this was Off Broadway and not Broadway, I'd also throw in Veronica Sawyer from Heathers.
My god Judes has the best songs in JCS. I always wanted to play him lol Sweeney Todd is just the best (original, not the movie) I love Les Mis. Javert is the best.
I don’t realllly consider the phantom an antihero, I consider him just a touch too much of a villain. A sympathetic villain to be sure, but yknow, still a kidnapping extortionist murderer.
Mama Rose from Gypsy, Henry Higgins from My Fair Lady, Bruce Bechdel from Fun Home, and The Wizard from The Wizard of Oz should totally be on this list.
I can't help but wonder if you guys have listened to Hamilton 1001 times, then sat there writing out every possible top 10 category that you can draw from it hahaha
ElLouVlogz He IS Javert. I can’t find anybody that matches the emotion and beautiful voice that Quast brings. Norm Lewis is also great but Quast is ICONIC.
I agree with the top 2, Javert and Sweeney Todd (to me) are interchangeable. Personally I would add Glinda too (from Wicked), she's the antihero in Wicked because she does some questionable things. Like unintentionally causing Nessa's death.
On Billy Flynn - You say twisting facts, I say suborning perjury! On Erik (Phantom) - First, He had a mother who hated and ignored Him so He had to raise Himself. He had nobody teaching Him right from wrong. Second, He truly loved Christine, but was ill-equipped to deal with it. Third, He acted as He did from desperation to feel affection, something He never felt in all His years. And finally, she DID love Him, but Raoul was the "safe" choice.
Have you read the book the musical is based on? And that it's supposed to mirror it and it's characters? Erik was obsessed with the idea of Christine. He was obsessed with her. And yes in his mind he loved her, but NONE of his actions ever reinforced that. He abused her, manipulated her, said he'd blow up the Opera House with all the people in it, including Christine if she didn't marry him. He was going to let Raoul die anyway, because it would amuse him. Christine herself said during the rooftop scene in the book that she didn't love him, she pitied him. But ultimately she was scared of him. She was terrified and wanted Raoul to take her away from that misery Erik inflicted on her. Raoul was never the safe choice. He was her choice because she loved him. And yeah you can argue that Raoul wasn't a flawless character, cause he isn't. But in the book he's the sweet and caring person Christine needs. Erik never comes close to trying. He flies into a rage when he doesn't get his way. He does try to apologize and promises to never do it again, but guess what? he does it again anyways. The damage to Christine was already done, she couldn't love him the way he wanted her to and he went mad, almost sacrificing her in the process. Blame his childhood all you want for his actions, but living through a childhood without love that does indeed make you desperate. But ultimately he had the choice to become a better person despite of that abuse, but he didn't. He chose to let that anger define him as a person, he chose to wallow in self pity, which is clearly stated in the lyrics "The world showed no compassion to me." Because of what he's been through, he thinks that his actions are fair. And in some ways, I can't blame him for that because that's how he sees the world. But his actions in the book never underlined that he loved her until he realized that he had to let her go. (And he didn't even want to do that.)
Hold on hold on hold on. You have TOTALLY misinterpreted the MC from Cabaret. He was protesting. He was satirizing. Especially during the gorilla thing, his point was that love was important and powerful, and who you are and from where you come shouldn't matter, and it only does to those that refuse to see people as people.
Yeah, as someone who did the show in college, this interpretation was way off. He's protesting and in the end, is led off to the concentration camps with the rest of the club.
I was yelling at my laptop when she started talking about the MC like this. WAY off the mark. If You Could See Her Like I Do is one of the most powerful songs in the show for me.
A few more antiheroes to mention Gleb- Anastasia The Engineer- Miss Saigon The Wizzard- Wicked Benny- Rent Billy Bigelow- Carousel Henry Higgins- My Fair Lady Hades- Hadestown Entire Cast- Assassins Nick Bottom- Something Rotten Evan Hansen- Dear Evan Hansen Natasha- Natasha Pierre and the Great Commet of 1812
For the Witch in Act 2 , she experiences the death of her daughter, wants revenge by finding Jack to feed him to the giant to punish him for his wrongs, when she finds that no one wants to give Jack to the giant, she calls them out for being “Nice” instead of “Right” in her eyes and disappears, in the final moments of the show she realizes that children listen and do what is right if you tell them what is right. A very complex character indeed!
An honorable mention that you missed: Monty Navarro, despite being the protagonist of Gentleman's Guide, is wanted as a murderer and a fratricidal maniac. (I know none of the people he kills are his long lost siblings, but all of them are related to him in some way. And not just because they're all played by the same actor either.) And yet, his asides/narration to the audience, comedic timing, and general "lovable loser in a rags to riches tale" endears him to the audience.
Fantastic list. I agree with them all. I also think that the Thenardiers count as anti-heroes since they are the cruel ones without believing that their actions are good but are also hilarious to watch. I think Bernardo from West Side Story, Elder Price (for self centeredness), and Evan Hansen (for being the most sympathetic character to ever make morally ambiguous choices) could go on this list.
Sweeney is a straight up villain. And Burr should have been at least top three. None of the other characters are as historic as Burr, and "Wait For It" is one of the best songs to hit Broadway. And I think either Evan or Conner from Dear Evan Hansen should have gotten an honorable mention, at the very least.
Phantom should’ve been number 1 in my opinion then Javert then Sweeney Todd I think Amber from hairspray should be on there too and Harold hill should be more then a honorable mention
Bonnie from the Bonnie and Clyde musical. In the musical, at least, she’s a dreamer who knows she’s going to famous one day “like Clara Bow”. Then when she falls for bad boy Clyde, it all goes south. She threatens to leave him after he kills a cop, but realizes she can’t go through with it and forces herself to be okay with this lifestyle, due to her undying love for Clyde. She even accepts her death, noting that “Dyin’ ain’t so bad...not if you both go together.”
Bethany Wallis although the main conflict does center around Benny trying to get last years rent that he “let slide” from Roger and Mark, despite the fact that when he first bought the building he told them they were golden.
Hello. Stop called Erik "Phantom" Call him by his name. Erik ALSO Christine does not love Raoul. She loves Erik. Her love for Erik is not getting flashed around for everyone to see, but hidden in the fine details of the musical, such as the lyrics and her body language. Christine proves that she loves Erik after she kissed him twice in The Final Lair. Thank you Have a nice evening
Sarah Thomas if you look at it from his perspective he’s not really a villain. He’s just trying to do what’s best for the newspaper business and agrees with the compromise in the end with Jack
@@drewbrown365 The problem with using that logic is that it ultimately eradicates pretty much every villain since they all tend to be doing the right thing from their own perspective. In terms of the actual story as it's presented to us, Pulitzer is absolutely the villain - a redeemable one, sure, but definitely not an anti-hero (i.e. someone who does morally ambiguous/unethical things to accomplish a morally good goal - Pulitzer's ultimate goal is entirely selfish in that he wants to increase his own profits; that hasn't changed even at the end) by any means.
Aaron Bur is the best character in Hamilton, Billy Flynn is a character that still represents in today’s society. Javert is another character that represents today’s society; that if the law is in their hands they can manipulate it.
Point of fact, Rapunzel is the Baker's younger sister, not older. "So when the baby was born I made my claim." And the Witch also states that she curses the family so that: "Your family tree will always be a barren one." If Rapunzel was older and was taken when she was born, and the parents can't have any more kids, where'd the Baker come from unless he's older?
I was kind of expecting JD from Heathers: The Musical because he was wrong for killing the bullies of the school and framing it suicide but he did to help not only him but his girlfriend and believed the only place everyone could get along was heaven
The thing about the emcee is that in the original (1966) and the movie (1972), he was the villain. He was a follower of the nazis. Joel Grey called him as bad as Hitler in ways. Because he was egging you on to be horrible. It wasn’t until the revival where he became a Jew who ended up in a concentration camp at the end.

Hades from Hadestown. I know that the musical is probably too new for most people, but Hades should be on this list.
Right on.
Totally! And I love the way Patrick Page explains the character at the Hadestown google panel at time stamp 22:40 !!!!!!
Right!
you mean: HERCULES

Benny - RENT
Madame Morrible and the Wizard - Wicked
Gleb - Anastasia
Sara DeVaney yes!!
I agree the Wizard can be a little bit of an anti-hero but I’d consider Morrible a straight up villain she’s probably the closest thing to a main antagonist in Wicked
I was hoping Gleb would at least be an honourable mention...😕
I don't even think Benny is an antihero. He's just a guy with crappy friends.
Yeah I was waiting for Benny in the honorable mentions at least

Aaron Burr is #1 in my heart
His voice is that of an angel that's tryna play a villain. He always has the most beautiful lines.
HOW DID HE GET NUMBER 6
And number one as fact
Because have you seen literally any musical or anyone above him? They're all completely *broken*, Burr's story was sad, but it's nothing compared to Juda's story, Javert's derailing or a heartbroken Phantom. Aaron Burr is my favorite character from Hamilton and some people don’t understand that and I’m just like, have you guys seen him and his musical performances are amazing.
Anti heroes are the best characters in any storytelling: films, TV, theatre shows, etc
Malcolm 1097 Agreed. They’re so much more complex than any other character.
Hades from Hadestown definitely belongs on this list.
Patrick Page (Hades) does a fantastic job of explaining the character and his motivations during the panel the cast of Hadestown did at Google (starting at approx 22:40). I highly recommend watching that segment of the interview!
I would include the Engineer from Miss Saigon. Amoral and despicable, but deliciously so.
Ain't that the truth!
Yes!
Oml yes!
agreed
True bro
Can I just say that Brandon Dixon had one of the greatest portrayals of Judas Iscariot ever? God he was so great!
I was in a production of Into the Woods (Cinderella) and the Witch to me is one of the most incredible characters in all of broadway. You never realize the greatness of the Witch until you are in the Musical. Great Character!
i was just Rapunzel in a production and you are so right. the witch just might be the greatest antihero of them all.
I’ve never been in it but I agree she should have been much higher on this list!!
I kept waiting for Mama Rose!!! But I do agree with you list. Love these musical lists!
Gleb from Anastasia defenitley deserves a spot on this list. amazing songs and a tragic backstory, 2 things that make a great antihero
I saw that now a musical Version of the Prince of Egypt exists. Ramses should be in this. He and Moses have such an interesting and deep relationship.
FACTTTTTS yes tysmmm
Yes!!! I love The Prince of Egypt!
i’m so happy w this list and to showcase that Javert isn’t a villain (The Thenardiers are the villains of Les Mis fight me).
as for future reference, the Les Mis Dream Cast came out in 1995, not 1998!🤗
If anything, Javert is the classical tragic hero of the piece. He possesses an Aristotelian tragic flaw that ultimately leads to his suicide.
Poverty is the real villain!
Javert is the human equivalent of lawful good.
@@Purplestraw Well, Lawful Neutral.
nah, the system is the villain
1) Elphaba and/or Glinda from Wicked; Evan Hansen from Dear Evan Hansen.
2) I would consider Alexander Hamilton an anti-hero, while Aaron Burr is more of an anti-villain. Sweeney Todd and the Phantom are also anti-villains, not anti-heroes.
Edit: Also Elders Price and Cunningham from The Book of Mormon.
*Number 1:* Shrek (Shrek The Musical)
He's the hero, not a anti-hero
Mr. Friendship *cue “That’s Who I’d Be”*

#1 Deadpool from Deadpool the Musical and Deadpool the Musical 2.

Billy Bigelow- Carousel

Agreed, brilliant character and deserves much more than honorable mention. I'd put at #1 or #2.
I do agree with the number 1 pick for this list... That character is very well made

Don't worry, they're reading all the comments to make an "Another top 10 anti-heros"
Phantom should’ve been number 1 in my opinion then Javert then Sweeney Todd I think Amber from hairspray should be on there too and Harold hill should be more then a honorable mention
Is anyone else on this video a Phantom fan go: HIS NAME IS ERIK! when he was mentioned on the list?
Daniel Beauxomme?
Bonnie from the Bonnie and Clyde musical. In the musical, at least, she’s a dreamer who knows she’s going to famous one day “like Clara Bow”. Then when she falls for bad boy Clyde, it all goes south. She threatens to leave him after he kills a cop, but realizes she can’t go through with it and forces herself to be okay with this lifestyle, due to her undying love for Clyde. She even accepts her death, noting that “Dyin’ ain’t so bad...not if you both go together.”
Why wasn't Beetlejuice even an honorable mention 🙄 #1 to me.
I was soooo scared that Sweeney Todd wasn't going to be on this list lol
Thanks to this video I found out The Great Jerry Orbach was an OG Billy Flynn
Rocky Horror Picture Show is my favourite 😍💜
Thank you!
Benny? He isn't really the bad guy he does try to help Roger and Mark
Bethany Wallis although the main conflict does center around Benny trying to get last years rent that he “let slide” from Roger and Mark, despite the fact that when he first bought the building he told them they were golden.
@@kittykat123425 yeah but he offers an ultimatum (not the best one perhaps) that can stay free and be able to afford to fuel their filming and music
Bethany Wallis that is true, and he does pay for angel’s funeral
As if Erik isn’t first. One of the most complex and classic characters in musical theatre
I have a controversial one but Evan from dear Evan Hansen the man lied to get the girl but meant well
Good list, but how is Coalhouse Walker from Ragtime not on here??
Hello.
Stop called Erik "Phantom"
Call him by his name.
Erik
ALSO
Christine does not love Raoul. She loves Erik.
Her love for Erik is not getting flashed around for everyone to see, but hidden in the fine details of the musical, such as the lyrics and her body language.
Christine proves that she loves Erik after she kissed him twice in The Final Lair.
Thank you
Have a nice evening
So I've played three of the roles on this list, and another 5 are on my bucket list....maybe I need to look closer at my casting type....haha
YAAAAAH! I knew it will Javert all along!!!!!!!!!
I saw A-Aron Burr in the title, I click
SHUT UP A-ARON
What about Joseph Pulitzer from Newsies?
I agree.
Straight up villain, I'd say.
Many of the Anti-heroes on your list here were featured as villains on or too 10 villains list which was supposed to exclude Anti-heroes.
Point of fact, Rapunzel is the Baker's younger sister, not older. "So when the baby was born I made my claim." And the Witch also states that she curses the family so that: "Your family tree will always be a barren one." If Rapunzel was older and was taken when she was born, and the parents can't have any more kids, where'd the Baker come from unless he's older?
sebbohnivlac the Baker was a baby! It’s in the movie
I was kind of expecting JD from Heathers: The Musical because he was wrong for killing the bullies of the school and framing it suicide but he did to help not only him but his girlfriend and believed the only place everyone could get along was heaven
I think Benny from Rent should'e at least gotten an honorable mention, not villain enough to make the list, but still an antihero.
The Phantom's real name is Erik.
At first I was sad that Burr wasn't #1, but I agree, Javier is the best antihero of all time.
When they mention Judas, does that also mean Judas from Godspell? The musicals are different but still show Judas’ struggles of betraying Jesus.
What about Luke from the TLT musical
The thing about the emcee is that in the original (1966) and the movie (1972), he was the villain. He was a follower of the nazis. Joel Grey called him as bad as Hitler in ways. Because he was egging you on to be horrible. It wasn’t until the revival where he became a Jew who ended up in a concentration camp at the end.
I think Coalhouse Jr. from Ragtime should have been an honorable mention as well.
Can I add Dewey from School of Rock and Wiesel from Newsies?
i think beetlejuice, regina george, vivienne kensington, and bonnie and clyde should be on this list too
So Number 7 is Singing Don Draper in what’s Basically mad men the musical.
I think Eva Peron should’ve been on this list
Judas at least got paid.
