    What is the bleach to water ratio and how long do you let them soak? How do you clean plastic foundation?

  • @sneakers0
    @sneakers0 11 років тому +1

    I use bleach to clean coral for my saltwater tanks. Rinse it with fresh water after bleaching and no problems. If it doesn't kill saltwater fish in a reef tank, i doubt the bees will notice. The key is to rinse the sodium off after bleaching (for fish tank.. may not be necessary to rinse for bees).

    Hey Don, how do you go about cleaning plastic foundation. I know you don't usually use it, and I tend not to either. But I have a bunch that I had from early on that I'd like to clean up and just have on reserve in case I ever do decide to use it or feel I need it. Would it work to just put the whole frame in solar wax melter? I tried scraping it and that sucks! What about submerging in hot water?

    Hi Don: After bleaching and rinsing how long do you wait before you use the frames in a hive so that the bleach smell disapates?

    • @Toxicrafa
      @Toxicrafa 9 років тому +2

      The smell doesn't bother the bees, actually they like it apparently, that's why they always go drink water from the nearby swimming pool rather than the water we provide to them.

    • @Toxicrafa
      @Toxicrafa 9 років тому +1

      no it won't, bees clean it all before making honey inside a comb.

    I want to Thank you for your video's, they are very informative and realistic with prices and doing things simple but most times more productive. Someone had told me I had to use a special kind of bee Supply bleach which of course the stores are very very proud of it so charge arm and two legs. You are using just plain bleach right? No fragrance or anything just bleach from grocery store right? Also do I rinse them off or anything before I dry them? Sorry for all the questions,, I'm 52 and just starting this. I have always wanted to keep bees but took this long to do it. I'm going to get in touch with you if possible,, not to bug you but to try and purchase some things from you later. Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge and when I get into a better situation and can, I will share a little green your way cos I know it cost you to do this.

    I was very curious about the use of bleach to clean the tables. Bees do not smell it? Sodium hypochlorite leaves no residue? You heat the water? I am a beekeeper who lives in central Brazil. I have some videos on my channel bee.

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You don't need to wire frames, instead just drill a hole or holes in the top bar preferably the size of a bamboo Barbecue sqewer and push them to the bottom of the frame, much quicker and cheaper!!!

    Don, do you use Honey Bee Healthy (or lemon grass oil and spearmint) in your sugar syrup and pollen patties when you feed bees? If so, how do you respond to people like Michael Bush who say that 6 of the 7 components in Nasonov pheromones are also present in lemon grass oil and that all essential oils kill some of the 8000 microorganisms in the delicate hive ecosystem? [I am a newbee and have been using Honey Bee Healthy and Mega Bee Patties (both of which contain Honey Bee Healthy) for the past 4 months with great success--going from 2 nucs and a queen to 4 good hives, boiling with bees.] What are the dates and costs of your classes?

      Bleach is not used in swimming pools it`s too dangerous and easy to get the mix wrong. What they do use is chlorine tablets in small measured quantities according to the volume of area to be treated.

    • @guitarstitch
      @guitarstitch 5 років тому

      Jack,
      Most swimming pools use chlorine liquid as well. The concentration is solely dependent on the pool maintainer's ability to measure the appropriate amount of chemicals.
      As for the bleach in the frames, the chlorine dissipates rater quickly. Heck, some beekeepers even use chlorine bleach in their bee feed to prevent fermentation and mold.
