The Dallas High Five Interchange is indeed America’s tallest interchange. It’s located in the greater DFW region of northern Texas and was built in December of 2005, replacing it with a partial cloverleaf interchange as seen from the year of 2001. Thanks for showing this five-level stack interchange, Jim!
I remember going through the interchange during it's construction in 2002 on the way to and back from Plano for a high school cross country meet. I was impressed from the start on it's scale. Plus it's on the way to Microcenter, whenever I feel like mustering the energy to drive through the beast that is north Dallas.
Guys, trust me! I've lived in Dallas for 20 years: and these frontage roads are definitely necessary to accommodate visitors as well as people who have to use this route to get to work every day. If there so happens to be an accident, these frontage roads definitely come in handy.
Awesome video! I've lived here for six months and still haven't taken all the ramps yet. I work nearby, and I love to see this interchange every day. It's a shame 635 doesn't look like that anymore - it's crazy with all the construction.
Like you I love the impressive designs of interchanges on freeways which I was first introduced to driving in the LA area in 1970 in my 64 Corvair. I was in the Naval Air Active Duty Reserve and was stationed at Los Alamitos and later at Pt. Mugu CA.I was blown away by the exquisite engineering in LA that seemed to build these four level interchanges on rather small land footprints. I remember driving north on the Long Beach freeway and marveling at the way the ramps were intertwined. It seems that Dallas has done some marvelous engineering as well.
Simply put, one of the VERY best road videos of the year. Thanks for bringing to us this excellent production of one of the world's greatest interchanges! Also, I didn't realize you liked this song? I'm not sure if I ever used it in a video, but I do remember linking it to you, once.
DFW freeways man.The D.O.T. there makes other states look...like slackers.I lived there when they "moved" and replaced part of I-30 eastbound in Ft.Worth and when they worked on Airport freeway and the 820 interchange.Awesome engineering.
Texas sells itself as a low-tax state. The reality is Texas has incurred massive debts (i.e., bonds) financing these road projects. It is just deferred taxation and with lots of interest to be paid on the debt.
Sweet post bro! I live in Houston and cover Dallas as my sales territory...I'm always impressed with both city's freeway systems and ike how we're waaayy ahead of other large cities when it comes to freeway construction/ planning. Now if we can only get the whole rivalry thing taken care of we'd be in business lol
Jim, I see you saved the best ramp for last, the level 5 one (635 Westbound to 75 Southbound). But, that's because I'm biased (it's how I travel from the folk's place in Louisiana back to my home in N. Dallas). But biases aside, the level 5 is spectacular to be on at night- especially where the ramp bends southward - Dallas skyline is easily visible from the top of the ramp, combined with the soar above 75..plus some tall buildings off to the west.
@prfsnlwannabe Thanks. The top ramp here is 30 feet higher than Spaghetti Jct, but Spaghetti Jct has 22 ramps total which I think is a few more than this one (not counting frontage roads.
I still can't get over this high-five! Wow... however I do think the theme song from Dallas would be a good fit! That structure..... inffreakingcredible! It's something I would turly love to see in person someday!
Have a question what is the 360 for? Ive lived 4 miles from the interchange since 1984. Ive never heard it referred to that so was just curious what it means? Anyways nice video! Subscribed

The high five interchange lookin nice and those colored pillars look nice and I see the star on each one of them Kinda reminds me of the interstate 10/beltway 8 interchange with the star on each pillars
@lakebay972 -It's the same with most big city drivers :) I see the purpose in the frontage roads, they just take a little getting used to. Honestly for projects like this, they are wonderful, I could turn around with minimal red lights.

@adogg619 In Columbus, OH, there's symbols of OH-315, I-70, and I-71 painted in white outlines on the lanes before the I-70/71/OH-315 interchange, and I-70 and I-71 are white-outline painted before they split at Downtown.
Nice...The only ramp that scares me is the one on the left (If im going South on 75 approaching the interchange)....It looks so High and Very Narrow!!..Can someone please tell me which ramp that is so I know to stay off of it!
@haljackey -Well Texas uses the Frontage roads extensively so yeah, I think they had to include them. Stopping the frontage roads before this interchange would produce major traffic and access problems.
That was an EPIC video of a HUGE interchange from EVERY ramp, including driving through the interchange. That's got to deserve more views than this, especially coming from you. I think the next video from Dallas would be either be a downtown street tour or a freeway drive through Dallas. Is there ANY way the High Five can hold a traffic count of 1,000,000 vehicles a day?
Great video and appreciate you taking the time to make a video like that. I know you had said that these interchange vids can be somewhat time-consuming
congratulations dallas.. you were only 16 years behind houston at getting your first 5 level interchange. how you only have to build 6 more to catch up..
You could probably call this a 6-level interchange if you count bike trail levels. There's a really nice bike/jogging trail has its own level underneath the main lanes. Just look up Cottonwood Trail Dallas.
@StayingBack71 None of the ramps are narrow so to speak, they are all built to current interstate standards, some have two lanes and some have one, nothing to fear.
I think it has been superseded as the tallest in the USA, but FreewayJim can confirm this, as he's more up on this than I am. I've been on that one a time or two, though not since 2013.
When i was a kid i went in a car up the steep one and i thought to myself what the hell, and we were stuck in traffic at the top, i thought it was one lane, i was a kid and i thought the car was gonna just lose its foothold and just flip back off the road and fall all the way down.

@FreewayAndrew -It would have made the video too long IMO and presented a drastic tempo change with whatever music I could use, it would have been overkill I think. I would have done the HOV ramp if it were open.
yeah , i took the top ramp during foggy weather , don't drive off into the clouds , no "Fruit Loop" gay colors up there. The local name for it because of the colors --"fruit loops"

Dallas/Houston/San Antonio/Austin/Fort Worth..freeways are awesome!
Went on the 635E to 75N "120" today at 1:20pm.
After gassing up in Richardson, I drove 75S to 635E.
LOVE IT LOTS!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, "360" means I filmed it from everty connecting ramp and direction from I-635 and US-75.
@@Freewayjim im an idiot 🤦♂

I bet the top of the high 5 gives you a stunning light show at night

That would be 75S to 635E. I was on it in 2012, nearly got into an accident. An act of GOD that I didn't.
@1xoirc Thanks!
@0marigolds -Thank you!
Did the High 5's 635E to 75N and 75S to 635E today.
PS: Is that a police car at the 635W to 75 forksplit 6:01 and again at 7:10?

Pd. Incredible video!! I will use it for therapy

@Freewayjim Also, why didn't you film the frontage road?
@Vecvero Thank you....i think :)
If only the 2nd level frontage roads were filmed; that's part of the beauty of this design.

@prfsnlwannabe TXDOT has a landscaping and aesthetics mandate on all new city construction project. They are mostly concrete moulds.
It is amazing in person.......I don't think there is a 7+ minute version of the "Dallas Theme", lol.
@StayingBack71 None of the ramps are narrow so to speak, they are all built to current interstate standards, some have two lanes and some have one, nothing to fear.
Look closely at 4:11 you can see the US-75 and I-635 highway symbols painted in the lanes. I've never seen that before, it's quite interesting.
@beepbeepme50 I do too, it's a nice touch.
You miss the H.O.V Fliovers but why😭
There's only one, decided not to use it.
@Au197 I don't think any form of a roundabout can handle over half a million cars a day like this does.
Thank you very much!

Texas puts most other states to shame
That was really cool man!
Oh my!! And I'm scared of the Golden Glades :(
LOL, it's not that bad, all the roads connect, just stay in your lane and focus ahead, it's a piece of cake.
Ok. I will remember your words next time 😁
Wow! Cool video!
50 YEARS N DFW
Thanks!
@Au197 How on earth could you maintain 45 MPH changing directions in a roundabout too?
Looking back at this now, the road is not that empty as it was 5 years ago. How is the highway so empty :/
Because It was filmed on a Saturday morning.

perfectly
@filrabat I'll have to make a point of traveling that ramp at night the next time I'm in Dallas, thanks for the tip.
