Sure gonna miss you Rod.... your poetry and rhymes bring back such good memories... thanks for being a small part in so many people's lives, especially mine.
Prettige dag.
I was 12 and in the hospital after an awful accident and on the hospital-radio coming from the wall I listened this song everyday and I loved it. I can still see the whole room around me and the people in it when I hear this song. It was a dark period for me but somehow this helped me through.
How so true, Rod saw some of these words in the toilet walls in the barracks, he served in the Korean War. Such a loving, tender, gentle man deserved more credit.
Rod Mckuen...with his number one hit..Soldiers who want to be heroes! He was a great poet and singer songwriter and a big friend of Jacques Brel who he translated in English!
A great piece of work that accurately depicts the feelings fears hopes and reality of an historical period in American History with wit and rhyme. What more could the world ask of any truly human. BRAVO
What I like about this guy is that his rhymes are so simple almost childlike - like they're actually terrible, but who the hell cares. And he didn't care - he just produced tons of stuff like this. I also like that the elites and academics disliked him because they could never do what he did.
What strikes me most is that how young he is. I was ofcourse much younger when i first saw him and to me he was an old man, But now I am 45 years older, he just looks like a young guy. Wonder what happened. He was hugely popular in the Netherlands and then suddenly nothing
A classic song by a much-misunderstood artist. McKuen was a true People's Poet who spoke for millions around the world. Those curious to learn more about Rod's complicated life should check out A VOICE OF THE WARM: THE LIFE OF ROD McKUEN, the new biography now out from Backbeat Books.
I served, I enlisted because it was my duty to my County and avoid the draft. I enlisted for three year without any thought of staying in and wanted to go back to eroding which I'd done for two years before. When I got out my rodeo days were over, a shoulder that wouldn't let throw a rope, a knee that still screams at me. But I got by, I found something else and now I'm an old retired galoot but, you know what, I'd do it again. This country has always been kind to my family and ancestors. So figured I owed my Country something.
Just discovered this song and this guy in November 2021 … can’t help but feeling love for this very human being … we are losing these type of people in the post Covid 21st century and it makes me heavy with sadness. Why did everyone throw it all away ? I keep one foot in the past and one eye on the rear view mirror, it’s why I’ve stayed sane and controversial as it may seem, it is also why I will never volunteer to have that terrible vaccine. In this new war I’m def not one of their soldiers.
Lyrics: Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero But there are millions who want to be civilians Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero But there are millions who want to be civilians Come and take my eldest son, show him how to shoot a gun Wipe his eyes if he starts to cry when the bullets fly. Give him a rifle, take his hoe, show him a field where he can go To lay his body down and die without asking why Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero But there are millions who want to be civilians Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero But there are millions who want to be civilians Sticks and stones can break your bones, even names can hurt you But the thing that hurts the most is when a man deserts you Don't you think its time to weed the leaders that no longer lead From the people of the land who'd like to see their sons again? Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero But there are millions who want to be civilians Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero But there are millions who want to be civilians God if men could only see the lessons taught by history That all the singers of this song cannot write a single wrong Let all men of good will stay in the fields they have to till Feed the mouths they have to fill and cast away their arms
I promise to keep his songs alive. We are going to record this number with an eye on the development in the world and the recent movement of the Troops towards the border of Russia and the Ukraine. WE don´t like War... Make love, not War...John L & Johnny B

Lyrics: Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes
Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero
But there are millions who want to be civilians
Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero
But there are millions who want to be civilians
Come and take my eldest son, show him how to shoot a gun
Wipe his eyes if he starts to cry when the bullets fly.
Give him a rifle, take his hoe, show him a field where he can go
To lay his body down and die without asking why
Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero
But there are millions who want to be civilians
Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero
But there are millions who want to be civilians
Sticks and stones can break your bones, even names can hurt you
But the thing that hurts the most is when a man deserts you
Don't you think its time to weed the leaders that no longer lead
From the people of the land who'd like to see their sons again?
Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero
But there are millions who want to be civilians
Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero
But there are millions who want to be civilians
God if men could only see the lessons taught by history
That all the singers of this song cannot write a single wrong
Let all men of good will stay in the fields they have to till
Feed the mouths they have to fill and cast away their arms
Nice song . R.i.p.

Nice song
THIS IS FOR YOU TROYD
Without heroes, good luck civilians.
Thumbs up if you think Rod regretted laying down at 2:05. I imagine it wasn't easy to get back up while that thing was spinning!
