After US Metal II came out, my brother and I noticed a tiny phone number on the back of the album cover, so we called it, and Mike Varney answered the phone. My brother was on the other line and we were gushing over how great his unknown guitarists were. At one point Varney said, "Check this out." And he played about 3 minutes (not this recording of Shawn) of some guy playing impossibly fast runs, mostly above the 12th fret. We said "WHO IS THAT GUY? He's the best in the world!" and Varney said it was some guy named Shawn Lane, who sent him a tape of just him improvising for about 30 minutes. (Years alter, I found out this tape circulated around GIT and guys like Paul Gilbert sort of saw it as a sacred text that will help them play better just by listening to it.) Varney said he'd like to get him to do something that lasts about 2-3 minutes and put it on a record. Couple years later: this is apparently it. Even in 2022: jaw drops, falls off, rolls into under the kitchen table. I remember Varney telling us this guy was in Black Oak Arkansas at age 15, had a "freaky nervous system like Art Tatum" and collected old 78s, and played along with Charlie Parker albums, playing the lines he heard Bird play a second before. It's like Shawn was from another planet. My LAWD!!!
Shawn was playing like this when he was 15 years old. Since the mid to late seventies when he was touring with Black Oak Arkansas. He plays piano the same.
This is a message to the daughter of Shawn Lane.......Your Dad was one of the best people ever he was kind, super smart and very funny...Oh yeah he also played the guitar.....I love and miss Shawn the person....

The warm up piece you are referring to is "Lane's Blitz" that was added to the record produced by Mike Varney's BROTHER Mark. Mark Varney is the MV in "MVP" not Mike.(The Mark Varney Project) THIS piece was submitted for exactly what you see here. Shawn wasn't into playing METAL so he optioned NOT to write a piece for a full band. But this was a legitimate recording to be added to this sampler. Nothing more or less. "Lane's Blitz" however was eventually REMOVED from all pressings of "MVP"
@@BrunoGarciaMusic not long ago I started listening to Shawn Lane and Govan, two monsters who opened another world for me. A pity that Lane left this world quickly.
@@matiasibarzabal2249 Shawn Lane thought Allan Holdsworth was the greatest: He was not your typical shredder in that he was not one to try to impress people by playing as fast as he could all the time, he just wanted to make music in his distinct own way, but what Allan did has to be some of the most proficient, efficient playing over the most advanced guitar music imaginable, while being the greatest innovator in his field from the seventies and onwards as well.
Wow... Thinking abour underrated guitarrists.. this has to be the most underrated of all times. I have played for 30 years and never heard of this guy until now.. says even Paul Gilbert thought it was unreal...that says a lot.
+HotRodSixString Hi, I recently found out that Shawn Lane never wanted this "song" to appear on record. It was actually a warm-up exercise he did and unbeknownst to him Mike Varney recorded this exercise after having implored Shawn in vain on several occasions to do a guitar solo for his record. Apparently Shawn Lane was pissed of when his simple warm-up was published. So he did not even try to fit in, the story behind it was actually worse... :-( Greetings!
+Robert Heilmeier That song wasn't this one - you're talking about "Lane's Blitz" off Mike Varney's Centrifugal Funk album: Excerpt from Richard Hallebeek's interview with Shawn: "I'm a little bit pleased with some of the things on there but the one part I hate is that solo of mine called 'Lane's Blitz'. It wasn't a solo. I was arguing with Mark Varney, I didn't wanted to do a solo by myself. He is very persuasive, and he would try to persuade me over and over. I never did it, I never agreed to do it. The tune that's called 'Lane's Blitz' was just recorded while I was warming up trying to get a guitar sound. He released it and titled it 'Lane's Blitz' and I never titled it that, never put that aside as a solo. And it's embarrassing and horrible anyway..I wish I could erase that from history, at least that solo. (laughs) But the rest of it it's not so bad."
Shawn has influenced my metal writing way more than Metallica, Megadeth or Iron Maiden even though i've been listening those bands long before i discovered Shawn and he wasn't even a metal guitarist. That riff at 0:20 it's just so sick, he is really one of the greatest of all time.
Anyone have a live video of shawn playing this guitar solo live? Another guitar player who was ahead of his time is Allan Holdsworth, bad ass guitar player!
There's no video of the proper Lane's Blitz on MVP. Anyone got it? There's also a tune of his sample he sent in to Mark that goes for about 2min with heaps of chorus.
john cash mad respect for Holdsworth, he was a once in a generational guitar mastermind and influenced many of the all-time greats, but Shawn Lane took it a step further. Buckethead is right, Shawn is the greatest guitarist to ever live.

Shawn Lane was better than Holdsworth which is absolutely insane!
