When a cover has so much impact that it makes you wonder which is better, that's a success.

this (Above) so much. a cover is about paying respect... not only to the original, by way of doing a cover, but in this case doubly, by way of letting you feel the message and emotion of the original again in a new way. which hopefully makes us more mindful again of the original message - respect those who sacrificed so much so we all can be where we are now

I have always been a fan of this song by Dire Straits but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural breathy bass was awesome along with Chance's smooth baritone & loved it when all the guys were doing 5 part harmonies. Who would believe humming could sound so good. They gave it a very solemn feeling. I love that they don't overproduce their songs. These guys are my favorite a cappella group out there.

It’s so hauntingly beautiful. Dire Straits is guitar driven (beautiful) where this is voice driven. Boy I love Tim and Chance’s voices in this. Love the echoes. Love the almost black & white film. Tim and Chance look ghost like in the windows. So stunning! Good reactions Boys! If you love bass, try their version of I Can’t Outrun You.

Thanks for reacting to this Home Free masterpiece. Home Free does all genres but mostly country. I think it’s funny that you said Country Music is not that popular in England because Home Free has 3 concerts in England coming up in Birmingham, Manchester and London respectively Sep 29, Sep 30 and Oct 1 2023 and they will probably all sell out…..

Caution - Home Free is highly addictive. Although they sing almost every genre they will always sound a little 'country' 'cuz three of them are from southern U.S. states (Texas, Georgia & Alabama - the other two are from Minnesota). They have around 150 videos not including solos, duets & collaborations with other singers. Three of them are also song writers so there are lots of originals too. Fall down the rabbit hole - it's a great trip.

To me, the Home Free version has a way of making you hear, and feel EVERY word of Mark’s masterpiece. There is no way to avoid the emotions with this one.
Post Script, “Man of Constant Sorrow” is actually a Folk song. The song of a Southern slave, bidding farewell to all he knows and loves, before he runs for freedom. First recorded around 1910, with no confirmed author. The song was then called “The Goodbye Song” or sometimes “The Farewell Song”
American “roots” music can be confusing, even to us. Folk, Topical Folk, Country/Western, Country, Southern Rock, Blue Grass, Jug-Band, even Du-Wop, can blur the lines. (Let us not forget Sea Shantys).

LOL re: your comment about us HomeFries and suggestions. Actually, we DO often tell you (any reactor) to just pick from their vast catalog, as they're ALL great. 😉
Keep in mind that if we listed "every song" we *wanted* you to react to, the list would be around 200 songs!! 😂 It's extremely difficult to pick just a few for suggestions, believe it or not. 👍😁

I know you don't know the group very well, so let me point out that they're singing hauntingly beautiful 5-part harmony here instead of the usual 4-part harmony + the beatboxer (Adam Rupp) -- who is singing high harmony here! This is most definitely their masterpiece. ❤🎶🤯

Home Free always pays appropriate respect in their covers--especially to the content! Their talent is amazing--and I LOVE their 5-part harmony❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️
Such a genius touch to show the silhouette of the fellas in front of the window. I know some see it as a "ghost"y reference but it strikes me as a reflection of the POW/MIA flag. We'll never know just how many of those met the same fate as the soldier of this song. 😥

Technically, the original "Man of Constant Sorrow" song is an American Folk song but the version most people are familiar with is from the movie "O' Brother Where Art Thou". Which is a bluegrass version of the song. The main differences are that bluegrass usually has a fast tempo and is accompanied by several instruments. Folk songs are slower & often sung a cappella. They sometimes are accompanied by an instrument, but usually one. The song was first published over 100 yrs ago, but there are different variations of the lyrics that go back generations before that. Country is a more modern genre of music that is compiled of different genres. Such as folk, bluegrass, blues, & more currently... rock & pop (and other genres as well but less so). Usually sung by someone with a Southern accent. Most often accompanied with guitars, sometimes banjos & fiddles etc. that gives it that "Country" sound. Thx for the video!

I liked the Dire Straits version, but I only got really interested in this song through Home Free. Although I have to be honest I think Dire Straits guitar playing is phenomenal
Yes, this version of Home Free will send shivers through your entire body! This is so emotional. Beautifully sung by Tim and Chance, but the background and harmony of Adam, Rob and Austin is also so beautiful. It looks like a choir or actually a kind of church organ sounds. And the whole setting of the video is just amazing. Simple but with so many details that makes it so profound

I am always open to the stance that my favorite of two dynamic versions of a favorite song is totally driven by my mood and what I am look to receive at the time. It is fine to settle on which ever one fits the occasion and the listeners. I am not willing to use a ranking if two versions are made equally impactful while using a different genre to convey the message. Better to enjoy them both with equal appreciation for a song that can touch people so profoundly even across different genre's. Beauty is beauty no matter where you find it. Great reaction!

I don't think you need to prefer one or the other. The Dire Straits original is soooo different that when I went to listen to it, I thought I'd clicked on the wrong video at first. This arrangement was created by the Finnish group Club for Five. Their version is different again, because it is mixed male and female voices with instrumentation. Since you are a fan of the song, I think you would enjoy it as well. As to recommendations for more Home Free, pretty much anything works. But I'll recommend some specifics anyway. The Driver. I Can't Outrun You. Dive Bar Saints. And their latest release, Give Me A Sign, which is the first of a trilogy. The second will be released on Friday. Enjoy your stay at the Home Free party.

    The original inspired them
I agree you definitely do not have to choose between them.
So not sure yet what genre is more to your liking. So hard to recommend which of their songs you might enjoy more.
But since you seem to favor, the Dire Straits song,
perhaps more for the words, and how it’s written, I might suggest their cover of “In The Blood”
if more of that era music, perhaps their covers of the
Doobie Brothers “Listen to the Music” or
    O’Jays “Love Train”, or
Huey Lewis and the News “Workin’ For A Livin’”
Or maybe their mashup of “Thinking Out Loud/Let’s Get it on” 😏
