An excellent summary well-explained. Lonergan's psychologizing of metaphysics, i.e. exploring the thought processes that go into developing metaphysical concepts, is a valuable addition to the pursuit of metaphysical truth. "Insight" is also a desperately needed anti-dote to the self-undermining inanities of most postmodern philosophers. As I used to teach my students, "Don't believe everything your thin,." i.e. practice self examination and criticism of your ideas. "Insight" is an excellent guide for doing this.. One side note: the CBC itself is an unrepentant and shameless player in the conflation of factual reporting with biased commentary and all the other techniques of 'news management' towards (their) pre-established goals.
Thanks for these comments. There is another video up about Gilson versus Lonergan on the You Tube. Also many of the slides etc. are on the website. www.theapi.ca
Who would have thought that metaphysics would be integrated into a university nursing program? Perhaps it should be part of any university program since, as explained so well by Sherman, it is so fundamental to any sort of education. Lonergan,s metaphysics is also a good - and much needed -antidote to the political environment of our times. I, for one, had never heard of him before this lecture and I found his ideas, though complex and very abstract, to be very relevant applicable to modern life. Overall this was a very interesting, comprehensive and ultimately rewarding presentation of a difficult but timely topic.
