California Zephyr at Chillicothe, Iowa

On 7 December 2022, the muted colours of an Iowa winter provide the backdrop to Amtrak train no 6, the California Zephyr (from Emeryville to Chicago). Running nearly three hours late, it is captured here passing Chillicothe, a few miles from its next stop at Ottumwa.
The unusually short formation - a single GE P42DC (no 33) hauling six double-deck Superliners plus a baggage car - may be a symptom of the difficulties Amtrak are reported to be experiencing maintaining their ageing Superliner fleet, many of which date from the 1970s.
