    I’ve been told Taylor will send the shims needed to you at no charge but I’ve never requested any myself. Enjoyed the video!

      Thanks Christa, Taylor may do that. I’ll check with them sometime. But I typically just get things done and back to the client as quickly as possible.

      Yea I’ve asked and they said they could but it’s been about a week and haven’t heard anything. Do you know another website that sells shims for the big baby Taylor?

    Stew Mac sells tapered shims. I have a Taylor Big Baby and used them in my guitar. Action is spot on now. If you do order the tapered shims from Stew Mac, get one (without pre drilled holes-you can punch out screw holes to match the original shim in your guitar) that is made for bass guitars, and then just trim it to fit. Don’t take the original shim out, you’re just adding a tapered shim. If you don’t get their shim designed for bass guitars, it will be too small for the neck cavity in the Big Baby. If you have doubts about which thickness shim to use, you’re better off getting 2 of the thinnest taper and stacking them if need be, however,
    there IS a formula online that will tell you what thickness shim to get depending on your action and how much you want to lower it. Keep in mind that a very thin shim will have a considerable effect on action height. Think baby steps here.
    The thing that’s great about Taylor guitars and their shim system is that it avoids a costly neck reset sometime in the future. The Stew Mac shims are somewhat costly, but a hell of a lot less than what a neck reset would cost.

      Thank you so much for this info- I’m eager to get this project done on my BBT and you saved me likely weeks of waiting.

    9:22 Great, I know what to ask my luthier on this BBT I rescued from EcoThrift store. I put new light gauge phosphorus strings so bright bossy sound. I thought the 2 screws were weird, but your video explains all. Will be a workhorse when the neck is adjusted. Easy on the hands. Thanks.

    Nice job Dane. I wondered how you'd approach making a tapered shim (as in I had no idea, but I reckon I'd start with a piece of carefully selected metal stock at the thick end as a neophyte's limit.) As you said- "confidence" and there's not a lot of that here. Another satisfied discerning customer then. It sounded pretty good to me but I'm a well known Ebeneezer with strings!

    • @jonahguitarguy
      @jonahguitarguy  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Steve. I did use a limit at first. Now not always, as you saw. I'm just as likely to stack up masking tape as a guide as anything else.
      It sounded very good with new strings and the nut cut correctly.

    is there a video with the new shim installation?

    • @jonahguitarguy
      @jonahguitarguy  7 днів тому +1

      Well this video has the completed guitar at the end. I mention in the video that the shim ended up being .015 at the thick end. I didn't show it going into the neck pocket, lost the video footage, but it just goes between the body and the neck heal. Mainly what you are after is to get the desired string height at the 12th fret.

      @2000SkyView 7 днів тому

      @@jonahguitarguy So you went from a .012 to .015, I'm guessing you got around 2mm at the bridge. Did you try to contact Taylor for shims?

    Great video. Do you think it would be feasible to break down this guitar to fly? Not weekly. More like 3 or 4 times a year. Do you think it would stand up?

      Thanks for watching rob. Yes I think it would stand up to a few times a year.

      I think I’ll start looking out for one. I think so too if I was extra careful with the screws. Maybe a little beeswax would help the holes from wearing out.

      @@924robYou could always use metal inserts if the wood screws get to sloppy.

    How about using a Formica laminate chip for a shim? Seems like it would not swell with Temp. change.

    • @jonahguitarguy
      @jonahguitarguy  8 місяців тому

      Absolutely David, might be a little harder to thin to size but it would be very solid. But still I don't think there would be much movement in something as thin a a neck shim.

    Hi Dane, I have the exact same model. Is it worth taking it in to get the action changed on this guitar, or do each individual guitars differ from the factory ? I do get a buzz every now and again but not too sure if it’s just technique.

    • @jonahguitarguy
      @jonahguitarguy  2 роки тому +1

      Hi T10, thanks for taking a look. There is a certain order of things to look for and/ or things to set on a guitar to maintain a nice feel for playing. For instance you can't just measure the string height at the 12th fret and determine it needs a neck reset. I just had a very nice old Guild acoustic in the shop that just needed a basic set up. Yet another tech in town told my client it needed a neck reset and sent him to me because this other guy doesn't do resets. All it needed was a proper truss rod adjustment. If you have a tech you trust I would have him take a look at it.

    Hello friend! I'm Brazilian and I just received my Big Baby BBTE, which my father sent from there. However, it came without the tensioner pipe wrench and I'm not sure which one works for it. 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) or 7 mm? Please, could you help me?
