Tariffs have worked in the past, it was successful under hoover , taft and other presidents. It is a good policy and helped create the so called American dream, that actually began in the roaring 20s, after tarrifs were imposed on everyone from the US. God bless USA

Two sides of the same coin,
      Europe is the Goldilocks market.
the US companies exploit and devour markets by moving in, hence why Europe hosts a ridiculous number of US stores. Usually at preferential tax rates.
The trade deficit ignores completely how these companies make money and how the US massively benefits from this arrangement.
Europe is a cash cow 🐄… it’s terrible for European industries but fantastic for trade wars if they were to escalate further than just tariffs.
This is why the tech bros do what they’re told in the EU, because they would be insane to jeopardise such a situation.

    1. VAT stands for value added tax and is a tax levied by most European states for all European citizens, legal persons or companies. It is not something special to America.
    2. Europeans do not import food from the US, not because they don't want to, but because of the legislative differences regarding the chemicals used in food. Not that there isn't a negative reputation of food, regarding obesity, etc.
    3. Europeans buy American cars as long as they are adapted to the norms, consumption and size. There is no infrastructure in most European states for pick-up trucks, for example. We like them, they are interesting, but we don't actually have room for them on the streets, the parking lots are not designed for this kind of cars, not to mention consumption. AND of course the questionable quality again.
    4. America spent 200 billion with Ukraine and Europe only 100. We are separated by an ocean... Ok. No offense, America started the war in Ukraine, not Europe. And Trump knows this well, as he accuses the Biden administration.
I hope that all of Mr. Trump's statements will have a negotiating role, so I see only one country benefiting and strengthening relations with Europe, and that would be China.

The EU has fairly strict restrictions regarding any GMO products, so that tends to limit a lot of consumables from being imported to the EU from the U.S. Many American made cars either do not pass EU safety regulations or emission standards, so that tends to limit importing American cars, for other products there are certain blacklisted chemicals, dyes ect. that are prohibited in the EU for public safety, but are in use in American products, again limiting the variety and amount of possible goods being imported to the EU. So no, it's not that the EU is purposefully bullying the U.S. it's just that so many things that the American goverment deems safe to use or consume, is not considered safe in the EU, this goes for everything made in the EU and outside of the EU, the same safety regulations apply to all. also as a side note, American cars tend to use a lot more fuel, which might be fine in the U.S. but in Europe we tend to go for cars with less fuel consumption.

"far more prosperous BEFORE 1913" this is quite literally the most ignorant thing on this page.
Per capita GDP in 1913 (inflation-adjusted) was ~$6,000, whereas today it exceeds $75,000.
How are you people this ignorant? pre 1913 we had a third world, undeveloped, economy...
It wasn't until after ww2 that our economy began to surpass others simply because we still had working infrastructure.
I just cant get over this, how are you this ignorant? Are you Russian ?

Economist here. A bit rich Trump cultists talking about Stockholm syndrome, but anyway I'll bite.
Your copypasta is hugely impressive of course, but if you understood anything about this at all - which you clearly don't - you'd know that the economic world we lived in 100 years ago was VERY different to the one we live in now.
In point of fact, the biggest barrier to entry for another country wanting to export their goods to the US wasn't even the tariffs it was the transportation costs. The only things being shipped, at huge expense, were things that had high value/scarcity.
This is not the world we live in now obviously. So please explain to me how consumers buying the sort of FMCG at places like Walmart and Target that didn't exist in your tariff glory days, won't end up paying much more? Please be clear - in a way your cult leader hasn't because he's utterly clueless - how tarrifs are paid by the exporter not the importer?

The US will do well if they drop the 100% tariffs on Chinese imported EV cars, and instead impose a 100% tariff on EU cars.
The advantages are that the consumer cost of living will immediately come down, which will be a boost in the time of tariffs which push up the cost of living.
It will further help with the $300 billion shortfall with the EU.
The EV car manufacturers in the US will soon find something else that is profitable to manufacture.

The EU, China, Canada etc. charge us tariffs on their products, but we don't charge them! Isn't it about time to rectify our trade balance with issuing tariffs of our own???? Yes, this will be painful for awhile, but meanwhile we can also start manufacturing products that we previously imported and help our economy by hiring employees and doing our own manufacturing!

The wealthiest 1% of Americans held around 18% of the total income in 1913 when income taxes were introduced to make the wealthiest pay for the government that benefited them the most. Today it is the 1% with 14.5% of all the income in the US. Seems the rich found another way to get wealthier with Tariffs to be paid by the US Workers.

Until Trump came along and advocated tariffs, Democrats were the champions of US workers, and generally liked the idea of tariffs for that reason. It's only because Trump supported it, that they had to oppose it, as a duty to their party. Trump has turned Democrats into conservatives on several topics.
