- The whole world knows about ‘Operation Blue Star’ which was launched between June 1-6, 1984 in Amritsar. Indian Army carried out the operation to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale hiding inside Golden Temple. Operation was ordered by the then PM Indira Gandhi, primarily to take control of the Harmandir Sahib Complex. But do you know, there was another operation which was proposed to capture Bhindranwale alive. Former R&AW officer GBS Sidhu talked about ‘Operation Sundown’ which wasn’t approved by the then PM Indira Gandhi. But, why then PM Indira Gandhi did not give a green signal to ‘Operation Sundown’? GBS Sidhu claimed that Bhindranwale would have “spilled the beans” if he was captured alive. GBS Sidhu revealed many secrets about Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Operation Blue Star.

Just check AP archive news of 1980s in UA-cam. The Sikhs themselves were to blame who whole heartedly adored and supported that terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale
It was a Frankenstein monster scenario for Congress, they created Bhinderwaley to counter the Akalis but Bhinderwaley got bigger.. And became a thorn in the flesh for Congress.. They had to get rid of him and so they did.
I agree. Sanjay Gandhi and then Home Minister Giani Zail Singh got a Sikh preacher who was pitted against the Akalis.
However, he became bigger than his shoes and turned against the Congress and later became the monster whom we know as Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Would Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale be sleeping when those helicopters would be coming and army officers descending on the langar roof? Even when a plane flies there is a lot of noise and anybody can recognise it from afar easily. What is this man talking about? What if the terrorists started shooting at the helicopters then? Wouldn't there be any army officers deaths?
Mrs Gandhi was reluctant to send the army inside the Golden Temple. It was General Sundarji and Gen. Vaidya who assured her that their operation would be ending within a day or two. Mrs Gandhi strictly ordered that no attack should happen on the Harmandir Saheb temple. After such assurances only Operation Bluestar was launched. Tanks were rolled into the complex on the night of 5-6 June 1984 after several army casualties as there was heavy fire from the Sikh extremists hiding inside the Akal Takht. As a last resort the Vijayanta tanks were brought in and then bombarding started on the Akal Takht.
It's easy to say now that Operation Bluestar could have been avoided or managed better. The then army officers themselves didn't know what was the planning going on inside the temple premises. Bhindranwale had fortified every corner inside the temple and it was indeed a battle field which the army witnessed when it entered the temple complex. The first army group who entered inside were hit by several machine gun shots and within minutes about 180-200 army men fell to the ground. Bhindranwale and his men were hardcore terrorists being backed by the then Pakistani regime of Zia ul Haq.

Indra was a brave lady who depite having threat of getting killed didn't remove her sikh body guard although it was a dumb decision. On the other hand bhinderwale cowardly hid in tge golden temple. That too sitting above a direspecting the akal takth. Although i agree operation blue star was a blunder decision.

If the shoe was on the other foot, and there were troublesome militant Hindus holed up in Hindu place of worship. And Indra Gandhi instructed the Army to open fire on the Hindu temple. Killing innocent people who were there to pray and causing extensive damage to the temple. Would Hindus turn the other cheek, cheer and praise Indra Gandhi adorning her with Garlands.
