Palmerston Island is one of those places we’ll remember forever. It’s the most remote place we’ve ever sailed, but that isn’t what makes it so memorable. The islanders have completely immersed us into their world from the moment we set our feet in the sand.
When we decided to buy a boat and set off into the deep blue, I dreamed of all the possibilities and experiences we would have. But I never expected it to play out so vividly in reality.
Yet, here we are, far away from civilization, living off coconuts and fish, playing with free spirited island kids and seeing firsthand what life is like when you live isolated with 34 of your relatives.

Thank you both for sharing your travels with this "Old Man" in Dayton, Ohio who lives in a nursing home. I love you both and look forward to every Sunday morning to see what your next adventure you will share. Stay safe and know that you both are loved!
Jim Nasium ❤️😊
Yes, we too look forward to a special & WONDERfilled weekly video every Sunday morning! Nikki & Jason are really inspiring people and they share so much love with the world!
I want to give your comment a heart - I'm not nearly as awesome as these guys but I do a little youtube adventure channel too if you are ever bored, I'd be honored. Ive spent the alst 20 years helping people like yourself with technology (there aren't really IT people for nursing home patients - and it was really rare 20 years ago) best wishes to you :-) great to see how you're using technology!
Hi Jim, hey bud we got this far ~~
I will never again be as young as I am at this moment. Keep reaching out for joy and happiness it is what matters most ( and health )
“It tasted like..good leaves” 🤷🏻♀️
Lol so cute!
Yup exactly.😍
Memories! I was the very first African American to step foot on Palmerston in 2018. Our boat was adopted by Eddie, the Constable for the island at the time. 6 glorious days with amazing people. I'm going back there one day soon.
Cool nobody can take that away from you
Isnt life simple there, life is put on pause.
@Big Brother What a miserable prick
Big Brother shut tf bring black and being trans is two different thing stop trying to compare the two!!
Big Brother 😂😂 exactly
I have always been drawn to books based on the sea and the courageous people who choose the freedom of traveling and living by boat. Your channel is a gem. Thank you so much for sharing with us who can only dream.
The beauty of living a simple life..........That family is rich in ways that money cannot measure. I love Sunday mornings with the Wynns =)
Me too! Having coffee real time with them now. :-)
You are so lucky to have a life like this.. Wish I had that opportunity in life.
they might actually be pretty rich becasue this island takes the number 2 spot for the highest obesity rate with a big 55 percent of people being obese or overweight
Who will remember the freedom they had as a child when parents weren’t scared of every single living or inanimate thing may harm them, when you were free to learn about the world around you. I don’t think there is ever a pickup game on playgrounds that didn’t have parents organizing them these days. Love the fact there are still places that matches the place that I grew up in.
If you let children have freedom and explore like that now you get done for neglect.
My parents gave us lots of room to be us; we traveled a lot too & learned cultures. Every kid should get to do that. So many people think the Russian people or French people are strange but they are the same as us in the US, they want the same things for their kids/families; its the Govts that are different. And the people are SO nice!!
I honestly think that this plays into why we have so many societal problems now. Kids grow up not knowing how to act, how to be independent, with depression and anxiety issues. Yes, kids need limits but they also need some freedom and need to learn about life on their own some.
Every coin has two sides, as does Palmerston, life on a small island can get very boring after you've seen everything (100 times) done everything (100 times) talked to everyone (100 times). It takes a special person to be able to endure that without getting "island happy"....I loved my time in the Pacific in many locations, and would not trade the experiences for a ton of gold, and I miss those places, as much as (or maybe more than) I wanted to get away from that life at the time. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for bringing up some wonderful memories!
Yeah exactly. Everyone who is saying " I would definitely live there and be happy " doesn't think about that
that's why only -50 people live there. most move to the main island or new zealand as we have automatic nz citizenship.
@@Ruebz_f30 hello bro are you living in cook island ?
You wouldn’t trade those experiences for 60 million dollars in gold? You could just have the experiences again.
@@boarbot7829 nope, many of those friends who made such great memories are no longer with us, and doing something the first time is not the same as doing it the 100th time. So far I've had a very good and long and memorable life, and I would not want to change very many things of it.
What was a bit sad was when Arthur explained about the younger generation's dependence on imported food as opposed to eating breadfruit etc, the traditional food eaten on the island. It's the same here in New Zealand where all the younger generation seem to eat is processed, packaged rubbish like chips, daily. It will be interesting to see the health statistics from both locations in the future...
Your videos remind me of the saying “live simply, so that others can simply live”.
If there was an Academy Award for sailing videos this one is it.
I agree what a great episode
@@chrisdickinson1762 For best documentary. Unbelievable! Fewer people than in Pitcairn. Awesome.
Pete Marsh best comment of 2019👍
Loved it. You two are such great ambassadors. With all the crap happening in North America it's so refreshing to see people living in harmony, both with nature and with each other.
Well said Dan! - I've always felt that this Earth could be like Heaven if we'd only let it be, but for greed perhaps or ego or whatever it's is that drives us to muck it up... we just can't seem to live in peace and harmony and selflessly cooperate for the greater good like these pure-hearted people on this wonderful island.
@@starttherebellion9146 what happens when there population grows, living circumstances change.
I would live in a place like that in a second. That kind of isolation is perfect for me.
I agee. It's paradise 🌴🥥.
Me too
It's easy to say that but could you actually see yourself living without tv, family, cells, food and snacks, social media, your old friends etc
@@adamclark9004 They have internet. So they do have everything that you mentioned xD
Even in the most remote reaches on Earth change comes. Sometimes for good sometimes for bad. Thank you for sharing and preserving the islands way of life in the digital world.
The island, the sea, the people, including the Wynn’s are just beautiful! ❤️☃️
What can I say, oh yeah, WOW! The adventures the two of you have and the professionalism in which you film, adit and produce are amazing. Wow! What a life you live and share. Thank you.
You tell such a beautiful story of some of the worlds most gentile people in one of the most isolated places on the globe. I have fallen in love with a place I've never heard of. Impossible for this Bostonian to thank you enough for sharing this slice of paradise with us.
😍
Especially now... as winter really stretches her legs out in New England, amirite?
I’d move to this island in a heartbeat. It’s the perfect distance away from everything I find confusing.
I think this has been one of the greatest videos made by you guys... awesome. No diving, no fishing, no sailing, no corals-reefs ... just hanging out with the locals and learning from them that a simple life is just as good as a complex city life.
“Wow that’s so cool Henry”
“I know”
Love his response. Nice island, fascinating to see what life is like there
lol and I thought I was the only Cuban-American watching Gone With The Winns.
I miss home everyday 😭! Bob and Tupou are my parents. I now live in Australia. Henry you have grown so much! And Madeenia you're growing too! When I see yous again, I'll definitely be looking up haha.
Thank you Goldeen. May God bless you.
It somewhat confirms the old adage that kindergarten taught us most all of the important lessons of life...love, respect, courtesy etc...oh yeah and the nap...can’t forget the nap😁! You are loved, Rick and Linnea. Fair winds...
Wonderful island with lovely community. Your adventures are such fun and educational. Thank you. I am filled with awe how you grab life by the b🌞🌞🌞s and learn new skills ie sailing and then go on your intrepid travels. Bravo to you both.
Nikki, "Henry, that's so cool!" Henry, "I know." 😂😂 Such a great episode!
😎
Henry is an awesome tour guide
Those kids are adorable! I'm glad you were able to stay a few extra days! 🌬️⛵
What an adventure. I would have a really hard time leaving this island. My eyes so full of rainbows from the teardrops streaming down my cheecks. A complex but yet so simple way of life. Thanks for sharing. You two are the best.
What a wonderful island you visited. The people are just marvelous. So friendly, so happy and so caring about the environment. All of us have a lot to learn from them. Thanks for sharing.
Money doesn’t matter there... letting that sink in. Thanks for the life lesson.
What a concept to think about. Barter and trade system at work.... I like it!
But they monetize these videos. Let that sink in
@@Chrisgonzales67 barter and trade is made a lot easier with money.
I've got this goat and I need rice. But the only person who wants a goat only had chickens to trade.
So now I have to find someone who wants chickens, which person happens to have papaya for trade.
Which I know I can trade for fish, which I might be able to trade for some palm wine.
Palm wine I can flog for lumber, and THAT I can trade for the rice I need.
With money, I can just sell the goat to the guy who wants a goat, and go straight to the guy who has rice.
I wanna live there
Indeed
That had to be a sincere reality check in your life knowing what you know growing up here in the USA, seeing what you have seen in all your travels, on land and sea to see people living on this small island in the middle of no where happily for all these years. But the outside world influence is changing them also. That's hard for me to say that's a good thing. What most of us take for granted they have never had yet they have seemed to do very well. Rather amazing. Great video Nikki and Jason, y'all really seemed to enjoy this visit.
I was overcome with sadness at the end watching you prepare to leave. What a great place and a great video. Thank you so much!
I’m indescribably heartened watching this episode. It boosts my confidence in humanity! Thank you so much for venturing to this amazing island and sharing their story with us.
I was looking at your video. At the same time, I look through my window and the ground cover with snow in Quebec, Canada. That video just warm up my day
🏝🌞
Watching you guys is always a “win win” situation 😀 thank you for taking us to a world faraway. Bless you both.
Back in the early 70's my dad used to live in Santa Ynez California. I would go and visit him there and it felt a lot like Palmerston Island. Remote, rural and very simple living. As an 11 year old boy, I truly loved it!
Yup, some parts of it, but hot like 105F in the summer and they have they're own culture ($$), NOT like Santa Barbara or Santa Maria.
The videography is always very good. But, the content and narration is amazing. So looking forward to next Sunday morn. You both be safe.
B Burrell: I agree.
How is it that I tear up almost every episode these days? I love that Jason set up the goal for the young girl to score. I love y’all. ❤️😭😭

WOW! I’m blown away!!!
This has to be the best adventure that you’ve shared to date. I’m at a loss for words. Thank you. The two of you would make great parents. 🤙🏼
This is one of the most interesting episodes ever.
AMAZING!! Tell them life isn't easy here, the struggle is real, we have to fight for our freedom here, there they have everything, they don't need grocery stores, gas stations, shopping malls they have everything they need, life there is simple and should be, just work but without the stress.
Fantastic story. Fantastic documentary. Fantastic cinematography. Very heartwarming. Full of positive feelings and emotions. Thanks for sharing your discoveries and findings in such beautiful manner. Safe journey.
🙏🙏
Thank you both for showing us how they get their Power and water generation. Because I have always wanted to know how they sustain. This is educational. Two thumbs up for this video!!!
it was neat to see it all in person. Palmerston has received a ton of support from the Cook Islands govt and the New Zealand govt. It's nice to see the world pitching in to keep this island alive.
Yes, totally agree! Thank you Wynns for sharing this information. Technologic wonders abound to provide sustainable power & healthy solutions. It's wonderful to hear that Palmerston is so supported by it's neighbors that have the resources & knowledge. Cheers to all of us supporting each other. We all have something special to share with the world, and we all can help each other.
I remember going to the Cook islands in 1989. I booked for 3 weeks, others a few days. So glad I stayed longer.
Ahhh... this is another special & memorable episode! Every week we look forward to watching your heartfelt & sincerely real adventures. You two are immensely inspiring! Thank you for sharing your joy, curiosity & adventures. We are ALL the luckiest people!
I start my Sunday with the Wynns and love every minute and rewatch often - thank you for sharing your journey with us - I am from Johnson City, TN but grew up in a small railroad town called Erwin, TN which is 10 miles south of where I presently live - see ya
Hello, I live close by you. I grew up in Springfield TN(where my moms from) and when I was in the 9th grade we moved to Clarksville TN(where my dads from) and I still live here in Clarksville. I just wanted to say hi.

By far these last 2 videos are definitely a top 10 ever for you guys. You do such a great job telling the story.
I've been watching your videos for a long time, and I think this is the best one yet! Thank you for sharing your life and theirs!
What a wonderful experience. To be able to listen to people talking about the reality of their lives now and the problems they see for their futures was very special. I hope that when those kids pass their teens and twenties, there is something for them to return too and not just their memories of childhood. Thank you so much for taking us on this journey.❤️❤️
What a stunning insight into remote island life. A beautiful watch ❤️
You two guys !!! You brought tears to this man's eyes, especially the way you interacted and presented this family and, of course, Nikki's final words of this vlog episode just tipped it over the edge. 🌞❤️

I'm glad you were able to see and experience their world for a few days and so thankful that you shared it with all of us. Safe travels!

Thanks again for sharing you guyz. What a wonderful inland & people. And little Henry reminders me of most Capricorn children. With his straight forward response to you Nikki. So cute Lol have a wonderful day/night everybody. Happy Holidays 😀
I wish my teachers had been as interesting as you two. I am going to forward this to my Geography teacher niece, it is a wonderful lesson in lifestyle, changing times, environment and sustainability all in 16 minutes, and it is a fun watch. Gee you guys are good!

And your comments lift ours. 💙 Hang in there!
I am delight whenever I see children growing up that way
As always, wicked awesome!
I think this kind of thing should be part of everyone's bucket list of visiting/staying at a place like Palmerston....if they want to "do the work" to help sustain it, meaning help out where needed, it's not always about money.
The mullet is the only fish that has a gizzard like a bird.
John Mac ok, interesting! 🤔
I was wondering too.
I love how the children pollinate and work with the plants. Beautiful!! That’s too bad that they don’t have bees there but the kids warm my heart. Sweetness!! ❤️❤️❤️
God bless south Pacific islands❤💕
I am so glad you said they have no fear. I was thinking that all through the video. I am so happy for them and they have work ethic also. They seem so balanced. I literally had tears of joy watching this. Thank you for this. We would never know places like this still exist.
You are educating people through entertainment, well done, sometime I wonder if the city folks would be able to survive on an island like this.
I am a city folk. I feel like a prisoner of the city. Or maybe I am a prisoner of my mind. From the first time I set foot on a sail boat, at about 20 years old, it has been my dream to find a atoll to die on. I am now 70 and still do not see it happening. At this point I don't even look to survive.
@@dickross7044 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆🇨🇰
Well they’d probably just get really, really board if that’s what you mean by “survive”. Endure the countless days of the same thing again and again. Probably not, as many people enjoy living a well connected and varied life, with access to many people and cultural facilities.
I love the Simba, "I want fish," soundbite mixed in with the outgoing fish and incoming ice cream and chips scene.
Wow, that is just amazing. You've had many unforgettable experiences---this has got to be one of the top. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Another Sunday morning, coffee cup firmly in hand, I open up UA-cam and I’m magically transported to a beautiful island far from the rainy weather at home. I would love to live on the Island
You would for about a week. Then you'd start missing home once that " vacation " feeling left you
You guys.....😢😢 I was already emotional after the video then I read Jim Nasium’s comment & cried. I know what nursing homes are like. Before my grandfather passed, he spent a few days in a nursing home that was four doors down from his home. It was pretty bad for him at that point. My dad & I went to visit. We were sitting in the communal area and as we were saying our good byes & standing up to leave, an elderly white lady turned to me with the saddest eyes and said “can I go home with you.”💔 *crushed*....But about this video....AMAZING!! That is all. You guys are incredible. I want to do. what you are doing🙌🏽🙌🏽 Keep teaching & showing us. I share Jim’s sentiment, you guys are loved. THANK YOU!!❤️😊
Meh, the internet ate my response. :( But, you know, after watching this video, it doesn't matter. These last two videos of Palmerston are probably the best two videos I've seen from you. You've brought home in a profound way the meaning of family, friends and those close around us in this video. This was very well done.
It's so beautiful there and the people seem happy and healthy. Sometimes I wish I could live like that. It shows that life can be amazing without all the bells and whistles we have
Nikki for sure was in her element - just being a kid! Me thinks she like...
This is such an incredible and valuable glimpse into a life 99.99% of us will never experience. Thank you so much. You two are just special.
🙏
Its tempting to sell everything I own and just retire there. Living off the land, contributing to a community for the rest of my days - at a different speed than the rest of the world. Thank you for sharing this.
I bet Jason is NOT looking forward to the 400nm passage. hoping the winds calm down just a BIT so its not so topsy turvey (but that you still have enough to sail comfortably!)
... Curious, which would each of you prefer:
1. High winds + Rough Seas but BOOKING it
2. A relaxed light wind, calm seas with a bit of motor sailing but twice as long?
I love that you grow up in a small Texas town and had great memories of the freedom it brings. We grew up in Friona and Muleshoe Texas. Love this show. We just did our ASA classes and looking for a cat.
Now wa-wa-wa-wait really a Harley Davidson t-shirt on one boy and did I see a young teen on a cell phone in class. Truly not Gilligan's primitive island. Again thank you for taking me places I will never get to see. Safe travel you four. PS check for stow-a-ways.
This was easily one of the top 3 videos I have seen this year! Hit me right in the feels!
They should get 1 bee hive honey + pollination 🤔🤷🏼♀️
I wonder if they have enough plant life that could sustain a bee colony.
or if a hive would last a cyclone or two?
Perhaps they need to plant enough flowering plants and crops that would sustain a hive of bees first?
A Flow hive would give them a sustainable source of honey.
But then honey probably comes on the supply ship in plastic bottles and is probably adulterated with corn syrup to give the kids adult diabetes.
No doubt they could probably grow other staples like corn itself or wheat IF they had the fresh water.
They seem to be doing fine.
So great ..as usual. So many "journalists" could learn from you too. The work you put into these videos is simply awesome. I know what it takes to do what you do, because I do it everyday too and have for 30 years, and I can tell you..you are very very good story tellers. I am like thousands of others, I always smile when I see the email that says Gone With the Wynns has just posted a video. Thank you both for understanding that "people stories" are so compelling and this one was fantastic..so fun to watch. Many people take viewers to places, very few know how to tell the stories of people's lives like you do!
Thank you Rich, that means so much to us. Like any labor of love, we invest far more time and effort than we probably should, but it's comments like these that keep pushing us to work hard and do our personal best with each adventure video we create. 🙏
Hard to keep someone isolated when they have internet to see outside world. People always want what they don't have😦 we want to be there, they want to be here. Maybe we could do a trade. They would want to trade back I bet. Hello from Hamilron Alabama 😍
My thoughts exactly. It's a bit sad, but the grass always seems greener on the other side. The more connected the world gets, the more "other sides" we can see and the more we long for something we don't have, not appreciating what we do have. I don't think there is way around that.
They probably dont even care not every one want to come to the outside worl were its more harsh then were there at right now
What a beautiful memory to have. A lot of our Cook Island people will be very thankful to watch your video. A lot of our families came from this little island and have now branched outward all over the pacific. Thank You
I’m so so confused? How can they afford an excavator and mopeds and a tractor, and high speed internet. I have some goggling to do
With help from the NZ government... There is a push of funds to them and other south pacific islands because the Chinese government is making loans and paying for infrastructure and expanding their influence in the region.

When we were on Rarotonga in 1975, we were told that the boat to Palmerston was in, would we like to go. It Takes 3 days and don't miss it, it won't be back for 6 weeks.
I suppose at this point my response to your video notifications is downright Pavlovian.
The coffee is brewing and you are all queued up for some viewing pleasure.
Cheers... and thank you.

Who needs travel channels on TV...these two wonderful people are the real deal. Immersing themselves into the culture of where they go...yeah much better than the glazing over a TV show would. Thanks Nikki and Jason for the awesome tour of the Cook Islands!
Wow! What an interesting video. I've always thought of isolated peoples as living a primitive life. These wonderful people are rich beyond measure. And much more involved in the world that us in the states. Would that we could all be so enlightened. Thank you so much for sharing!
"Money doesn't do us any good here in Palmerston, we need other things"...that's so relevant, to the situation the world faces today... with negative interest rates, the crazy billions pumped into the banks every night by the Fed....

We touched a little on this in the blog post. Basically the original family made a rule that you are supposed to marry a spouse from outside of the island.
@@gonewiththewynns And do they follow that rule ?
That was my question as well.
