- Let's take a evening drive through Connecticut and check out how Hyundai's semi-autonomous highway driving system called Highway Drive Assist or HDA (level 2) performs at sunset and on poorly marked roads. What has your experience been like with the system? Let me know in the comment section.
Hope you all enjoyed the Short Circuit reference in the thumbnail. Its one of my favorite childhood films.

I am only half through the video (my kids constantly trying to get my attention) and already it is the best video covering Ioniq5's HDA in thr whole of UA-cam. Really really well made. Also with the timer and the screen in screen. Thank you so much for creating this! 🙂 I feel better prepared now when I will drive my family around in the new car and better know what to expect (and where the systems limits are).
Best video I've seen of this car's autonomous driving. Thank you! You earned a sub!
A very helpful review. Here in the UK I used the highway drive assist on the M 25 around London. It was great, it took much of the stress out of working with very variable speed traffic both stop go , middle speed, and high speed. Felt fairly relaxed when I got home to Colchester.
I have same, for the price way better than tesla.
The thing I like about the cruise control is that the car can adjust the speed according to the current speed limit of the section of road you are on with a push of a button.
Have ordered my Ioniq5 Ultimate (UK Spec) which I’m probably not going to get until Christmas, but I feel like I’ve had one for a year already watching your videos - absolutely great! When I (finally!) get mine I won’t have to endure the usual patronising training session at the dealer! (I’ll probably be able to tell THEM about it! 😂) Many thanks. 👍👏👏
Thanks!
Your information is valuable to us and appreciated!
Danke!
I've had my 2023 Ioniq 5 AWD SEL now for 6 weeks and just found out today that this car has HDA 2. My sales guy said it did not have HDA 2 when I asked about it, so I have just assumed up to this point that he was correct. Your video educated me to the differences and now I know! Another thing I learned about the system is that it must be on a highway it knows about to use the lane change assist. My daily commute is on a new stretch of freeway that only opened about 3 months ago and even though it is US interstate highway and 3 lanes wide, the lane change assist will not work. I was actually on a different freeway yesterday when I noticed some new icons on my display when I set the cruise control plus I noticed when I engaged the turn signal it turned the lane next to me green (on the display). I thought to myself, I have never seen this before! Again, I really didn't know what I had or how to use it until I saw your video - so a big THANK YOU!!!
Very well done. Just got mine, still learning, first day today.
I found if you reduce speed to the posted speed limit, or slightly below if traffic isn’t an issue, then lane keeping assist seems to handle the slightly sharper curves. I found when driving between 10-20 mph over the limit it struggles. Otherwise it works as you have demonstrated. This is the nicest care my wife and I have owned in terms of technology and are loving it as a daily driver. We have an SEL model.
Great video, loved the part when you refused to put your hands back on the steering wheel even when it kept yelling at you! 🤣 Good to know how it all works.
@@RoyGregorio fast forward to about 14 minutes in. (Not literally yelling though LOL)
Got my Ioniq 5 limited last week, I was skeptical about all the driver assist features but after a 100 mile trip over the weekend I'm now convinced, funny how the little bit of stress reduction using the system seemed to make the trip feel much shorter than usual.
This was a good video because I haven’t really tried the HDA in my I5 since I bought it.
I use the cruise control and one pedal driving but I steer the vehicle myself. Sometimes weather and no lines can trick the car cameras. Great video good stuff to know.
Great video. The first month I used it I had some issues with it hugging the right side of the lane and it showing me in the center. Not sure if it has learned how I drive but it is definitely better than it was. I think the timing of "keeping your hands on the wheel" depends on your speed and how the roads are. The roads by me are terrible and can be a bit iffy sometimes.
One thing I do think it should have is that when the HDA system doesn't recognize your hands, it should slow the car to a stop and put the hazards on in case the driver passed out or had a medical issue. Just my opinion.
Just hit 5000 miles yesterday on mine! Keep the videos coming.
Mine definitely hugs the right. Pretty significantly too. It’s on the line at times and unusable. Hopefully it works itself out. I may try and take it in to see if it can be recalibrated.
@@fishyducky since I've been using it more and more it has definitely gotten better. The rumors that it learns how you drive must be true. It's better lately with staying centered. As long as you give it some help while it's on and "learning"
Hi from Germany, i love your Videos , have to wait for mine till 2023 ....
You can live vicariously through me and my car in the meantime 😁
@@TheIoniqGuy i will watch every Episode i hope it will reduce my pain a little bit 😂😂😂
I was stuck in traffic coming out of Orlando on I-4 doing the stop and slow thing, typically under 25mph. I didn't touch a thing for almost 20 minutes--no warnings until we got over 25mph.
That's gotta be the best use case for the system
Does the car start and stop itself in those situations? I have a 2015 i3 and you have to tap the accelerator in order to get the system going, but it will stop itself and track the car in front of it.
@@300rivers4 If you are on an interstate highway or some other limited access highways, it will stop and start by itself. On other roads, you have to tap the accelerator or tap the resume button to start from a stop of over a few seconds.
Been driving a 2022 Niro EV as a rental car for a few days and noticed how confident the system is. I believe it's the regular steering assist function, not HDA. Though, it's much more confident compared to Honda Sensing. It rarely gives up and will eventually, but unfortunately, ping-pong its way back into the lane around corners that Honda Sensing won't and can't do even with the OpenPilot system I have installed.
I still want a sedan. So I am patiently waiting for the IONIQ 6. Things like this and my rental car make me very excited about the thought of installing OpenPilot in it and watching it eat those corners on the highway all while being electric.
I found my ioniq 5 rides the center line or left line of a two or three. I possible need to use it more so it learns my driving habits. I have had nothing but a good experience with the assisted driving.
Great video with a nice demo of what the Ioniq 5 can do with the HDA! Thank you for sharing! 🔌⚡🚘
dunno if you've figured this out yet (not quite halfway in the video) but to help you understand the "keep your hands on the wheel" timing: remember you have to twitch the wheel to remind it you're there and that's because it uses resistance to know, so the more it has to turn left and right then the sooner it will know you're not touching the wheel. So the straighter the road the less it will ask of you cause it doesn't know you're not there.
Ahhhhh I thought it was a touch sensor.
I see no correlation between turns vs dead straight highway and my ioniq 5 demanding hands on the wheel.
thank you. We need more of these videos to show that other than Tesla, many are just as good. any autonomy allows the driver to relax a bit on the long boring highway cruising.
Although it is called automatic lane change, it doesn't automatically change lanes if your speed drops below your set point of 73 behind the car ahead. For example, around 5:20 it starts dropping down to 64 mph and there is no sign of a car coming up in the left lane. Probably best to call it lane changing assistance.
I got my ioniq 5 two weeks ago and have 18,000+ miles on the vehicle already! Went from middle of NJ to the mountains of North Carolina! What a great time my husband and I with our two dogs!
The adaptive cruise was a god send
18k miles in two weeks?! Is that even possible? Did you mean 1800? Glad you had a good trip
@@TheIoniqGuy yes I did mean 1800+ miles in two weeks my thumb had an issue! lol 😀
Haha that sounds better. I did the math and that would have meant you were driving at 53 miles for two weeks straight. That was going to be news to me that there was in-drive refueling like the tankers to fighter jets
@@TheIoniqGuy I have been having brain farts quite a bit lately! I’m only 62 but I also wired as a nursery aid for 5 years!
Thanks. Appreciate the demonstrations. I'm considering updating from my Nissan LEAF.
Ioniq 5 would be such a massive improvement over a leaf!
impressive
Re-watching this video, can you do a follow up video testing HDA on 2-lane highways? It appears that HDA is only active when the lane marking graphics are green (like at 20:45). At 18:35 when you were on the 2-lane road the lines were white - meaning that only standard LFA was active.
You should test it on a two-lane road that is a US highway. In this video you tested it on a state highway which probably wasn't classified as a "major highway" in the nav system. It would also be helpful to mount a GoPro on the steering column so we can see the instrument cluster display in detail. Thanks. 😊
The hda seems to do pretty good for long stretch highways but surprised as well as it does on the highway it didn't handle those relatively long side street sweeping turns. Hoping a few more updates from kia and it's doing lane keep as well as basic autopilot, which would make kia cars VERY capable.
Keep testing it, keep making videos, keep pressing the car makers to make it better and you're gonna see good updates from kia. This is the next gen car feature. It was GPS, then Bluetooth, then multimedia screens, then carplay. Now it's autosteer and unless you push the car makers to focus on nailing it, you're gonna get lukewarm capabilities and unused features like lumbar support for the back middle seat.
Sunglasses holders for Ioniq 5, that is a terrific idea. It is better than traditional holders.
Hey, you were driving through West Willington northbound on 84, I drive that area every day!
I was indeed. I’ve seen a few Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 in that area when I’m doing these little efficiency tests
Good review! Very informative. Two things, how do I find the setting to display the car as you did on the driver screen? And, it would have been helpful to be able to see the icons on the screen that were blocked by the wheel.
If you have a left hand drive Ioniq 5, press the top left button that’s on the right hand side of the steering wheel until you see that screen appear
Mine used to do the same thing. Its more confident
I guess the machine learning is actually working
I have an Ioniq 5 SEL with the same inside color but it has the matte gray paint on the exterior
Really helpful thanks, new to the car and the manual is just confusing!
'lucky' usa. In Europe, it's a max of 15 seconds.
Could you explain why you are not using the speed limit ? HDA 2 have an automatic adjustable speed. I find it very useful
Great video, maybe I missed it but I have a 2022 Ioniq 5 ultimate in UK, but I don't have that display showing cars around you, is that a software update or only newer models?
Great video, confirms the same experience I had. For your next video, do a review self parallel park and parking while in the car?
Unfortunately, my car doesn't have those features.
What does the red icon mean when it appears on the screen? Thanx.
I don't know if I have the HDA 1 or 2, but my I5 still bounces a lot on the highway after 1600 miles/2600 km, so I often turn it of. The road lines here in Norway is not allways the best either, but I've noticed that the better lines, the more it bounces.
Mine is a awd se which comes with hda 1. Before I bought it i test drove an sel with hda 2 and I didn't notice a difference.
@@yousuck9954he difference between HDA 1 and 2 are only the lane change feature and the visual display of the other cars on the driver info screen. Plus it will adjust the position in a lane depending on cars next to you. But people have been reporting that that not always wanted so some prefer HDA 1
If you take over control of the steering, do your maneuver and then relinquish control, does it immediately jump back to self-steering, or do you have to reactivate it?
At 18:30 is the HDA icon in green? Your steering wheel blocks it so we can't see in the video.
I've seen other videos where HDA is active on secondary (2-lane highway) roads. That would go against what Kia & Hyundai have publicly announced that it relies on pre-mapped roads. Maybe they meant "pre-mapped" to be any road in the navigation system and not just selected ones like Ford's BlueCruise or GM's SuperCruise.
I'm getting the EV6 Wind RWD trim and unfortunately Kia locks the HDA 2.0 version in the GT-line trim (or AWD with Tech package). Thankfully, HDA 1&2 are almost identical except for auto lane change, which I'm okay doing manually anyways.
I can't recall. HDA can only be activated on major roadways which I believe just means whatever the navigation data tells the system is a highway. I don't think the highways are actually mapped. I think it just allows activation when it knows that it's on a highway. In my experience, I believe you can only activate it on a divided highway.
@@TheIoniqGuy That was my second theory: that the roads aren't "mapped" or "hand selected" but based on road classification in the nav system. Maybe you can do a test on an un-divided US highway.
@@TheIoniqGuy Canadian owner. It definitely works for me in town on surface streets as long as the lanes are clearly marked. I believe that the issues you were having when it stopped working in the turns is because the lane markings disappear for the intersection. My experience has been that HDA is heavily dependant on consistent lane markings.
Great video, do you have your I5 driving style set to based on driver mode or based your on driver style?
Have you figured out the easiest place to put your hand(s) on the wheel when you get the notice to place your hands back on the steering wheel? I'm trying to figure out the fastest/easiest way to get that notice to turn back off when it comes on. Thanks for all the great videos!
great vid! Did you have to pay extra for the Highway Drive Assist or HDA (level 2) feature?
Nope! All Ioniq 5s come with it. SEL and above have HDA 2 with machine learning and semiautomatic lane changes
Would be great to have a video on the steering wheel and all the buttons/what they do
Good idea!
@@TheIoniqGuy as someone who is waiting till Jan for my I5 and only had a test drive would be great to see more on how everything works and what all the buttons do. Love your content.
we are about to get an Ioniq 5, and I'm hoping to learn how to use the self-driving, rather than "how good is it" thanks! I'll keep poking around.
In Ontario, Canada, along highway 401, my I5 allows me to get up to 4 minutes hands-free; on secondary highways up to 1 minute. I use it all the time. The Lane Change function isn't logical since you need to keep your hand on the steering wheel ... so why not just do the change yourself? I have the top of the line I5 for Canada and the feature is excellent - much better than my previous Kona EV which complained every 12 seconds. Edit: the sunglass holder works well too! 🙂
Wow, 4 minutes!? That's wild
@@TheIoniqGuy Yup. If it detects too many vehicles, it cuts the time down.
Looks like you’re in eastern CT? Any dealer recs?
I bought from shakers family Hyundai in Watertown so not really eastern. Service at Key Hyundai in Manchester has been great
Shouldn't take much work to add -- in city driving -- recognize traffic lights and stop automatically on red or stop signs; use navigation guidance to automatically change lanes and turn corners at intersection, assuming the driver can take charge if needed. Surprised these aren't included already.
I saw a video where the driver ignored the warnings to put his hands on the wheel and eventually HDA disengaged but cruise control kept going. Seems incredibly dangerous (say if you pass out at the wheel). I take it from your video that your car didn’t do that.
I had a model 3 for three years. Autopilot (not talking about FSD) is the thing I miss most.
I sure hope that this will be a decent enough experience in comparison. Maybe even software improvements by the time I get my 2023 i5 in several months.
what is the main difference between autopilot(not FSD) and this lane keeping assist in the Ioniq?
@@gokulsukumar6516 Thats the Tesla can't turn on each feature individually, deactivates everything if the driver overtakes the system and requires activation again etc. Without FSD (which isn available outside the US and there only as beta) its basically just as capable as comparable to others .
Hi! Great videos! I noticed when you used the indicator the blind-spot indicator didn't flash up on your cluster - are you not on the top trim? I see that you do have indicators showing cars on either side of you...I have to say I am confused by all the different names that are used especially between the USA/Canada and Europe. In Iceland, where I live, Hyundai only sells three trims, which they confusingly call "Comfort" which I guess is the basic SE, then we get "Style" (which we bought) and finally "Premium" which is the top trim: glass roof etc. I haven't tried the HDA yet - basic lack of highways in Iceland, lol. Would the "Style" version have HDA 1.5 or 2 and how would I know which one?
I have a Tucson and the line assist work is very good except when you have a yellow line, it has a tendency to be much closer to it. Also, when a car in front take an exit it slow my car very fast and will resume only after I pass the exit, very annoying.
On the off ramp exit I think you have to be on navigation mode and maybe the exit will work?
Have you seen consistent updates to Highway Drive Assist, or is it still basically the same as when you purchased it?
I swear it seemed better after the last update but who knows for certain
@@TheIoniqGuy I was considering the Ioniq 5 or EV6, but locally they have major mark-ups which puts them above the price of the Tesla Model 3, even with the Tax credit. The Model 3 just seems to offer a lot more in terms of tech/autonomous driving and gets major updates that have new features almost every 2 months, making the car feel "new" or not outdated even after years. Ioniq is a great car for sure! I enjoyed the test drive, but ultimately went with Tesla.
Hi love your videos
I am looking at getting an ionic5 ,I got into one at fully charged live in Sydney Australia, the only thing I have an issue with as a paraplegic is the height of the seat,do you know if it is possibly to lower the car ride height? Even 30 to 50 mm would make a huge difference.also do they come with factory hand controls as an option.
Thanks Jeff
Hallo fromHolland ( The Netherlands), were can I order the sunglasses magnetische Holder???
Hello! You can purchase at the following link if interested: tinyurl.com/bdf75643
For how many years do you get free software updates?
Does it only work in interstates in the US or anything that is interstate grade should be fine?
It works fairly well on major state roads and highways too
Is this the same hda as the palisade or is this more advanced?
It would be nice if it went into the break down lane and then shut off. 👍
I have a FSD Tesla Model Y and thinking of the Ioniq 5 SEL or Limited. The very frequent and loud tones, buzzers, etc. on the Tesla are a bother, particularly if you have had the car a long time and know how to drive it. So, I only heard a few warning sounds on your video and they were more subtle (a good thing for me). Have you found that to be the case when using HDA II or did you do something to quiet them in this video? THANKS, BTW, this gave me a much better understanding of HDA II and it looks to me very similar to Tesla FSD.
Glad to hear you might be making the switch. HDAII is very unobtrusive. The settings I had on in the video are the ones I always have on and I can tell you I pretty much never hear a single beep out of it on the day to day driving I do.
Hi Corbin. I wish you would take it for a Lane Following Assist stress test on crappy roads... Why does my LFA icon go from green to black to grey? It often goes directly to grey when there's an issue - which sometimes is a mystery that I'm waiting for you to solve - but recently on one patch of roadway no matter how many times i engage it, the icon flashes black, and then turns to grey. Has anyone else experienced this?
I was wondering what your thoughts on about highway stop and go traffic? I found a few instances where the HDA just turns off when it hits stop and go traffic? I thought it was a full speed system.
My experience in stop and go has been pretty much perfect. Even without my hands on the wheel it'll handle it for miles sometimes before yelling at me
@@TheIoniqGuy I started playing with the settings: the acceleration and braking/follow distance settings - I think I found nice median that works for me! One more question as I could not ctrl-F the digital owners manual for this - when I'm using google maps and naving, the HDA indicators go on, I have seen the "NAV" go to green once in a while.... What does it mean when the "NAV" on top of the HDA indicators go solid green? Thanks!
with the autonomous features enabled, will the car come to a complete stop if a car in front stops?
It will
I have an SE trim and Ive been impressed with the HDA 1. Based on videos of HDA 2 it seems that HDA 1 pretty much performs as well as HDA 2 besides the lane changes. I would like to see how HDA 2 reacts to other cars merging into the lane since the higher trim has more sensors. HDA 1 does pretty well at this sometimes but sometimes i need to help. My only other complaint is with the Adaptive Cruise Control. I wish it would have a smoother automatic braking. When approaching heavy traffic it brakes very late and abruptly So i really don't trust it at large speed changes.
There is actually no difference between HDA 1 or 2 besides 2 having lane change and animations showing other cars next to you.
@@Seitenwerk really? doesn't it have more sensors? I assumed thatd make the overall performance better
Hello and thanks for your videos on Ioniq 5. I have the Ultimate model and I live in Canada. In the setups, I made sure that all bells, whistles and brakes are on for security ( my daughters will drive it). I was on a secondary road at night and there was 5 deers in the middle of the road. I never had any warning from the car. I expected to get a collision warning is’nt it? Anyone had a collision warning from pedestrians or objects on the road. Thanks for your feedback!
I've had collision warning come on a few times when coming up on someone too quickly
Radar detects moving objects MUCH better than a stationary object. There's a UA-cam video about it. Very important to know for safety.
I'm also Canadian (do not have an IONIQ 5) but I am confused with the Hyundai Canada website - there's no reference anywhere to Highway Driving Assist (HDA) 1.5 or 2 or anything. It only mentions "Lane Keep Assist" and "Lane Follow Assist". Are these all the same things? Or are Canadian cars "neutered"?
I don't know if you noticed it, but the right blind side alert did not trun red even though you passed many cars and semis that were on your right. It only came on a couple of times. It's obviously a defective right blind side sensor. Please watch the video again and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Do you know if the version 1.5 of HDA also uses machine learning or is it only version 2 ?
was the dark theme only available after a software update?
If memory serves it always had it but at first it wouldn’t change from light to dark mode based on sunset, just an exact time each day
Johnny fives IONIQ5!!
Why didnt your side camera’s come on when you changed lanes?
I don't have a limited. My SEL doesn't have that
my dream is to have a car that can drive me to work while I do stuff on my laptop...that way I can get paid for driving time and if traffic is bad it doesn't impact my day so much - rather than AI, I'd love some kind of remote piloting of vehicles. That way a trusted remote driver can operate the vehicle for me....yeah I know...scary too
19:40 shows how bad it is. Teslas autopilot navigates turns like that with 100% confidence
Have a limited trim with this option. Not gonna lie, I'm fairly disappointed with the HDA2, mostly the lane centering functionality. I notice that it bounces back and forth in the lane and the turns it takes are too close for comfort when other vehicles are in lanes next to me.
Hey! i was wondering if when in stop and go traffic, do you have to reset anything? like if you sit for like 5 seconds or more does it make you reset the cruise control, like tap brakes or hit the button again?
Nope, it'll just start driving once traffic moves
@@TheIoniqGuy thats great!
My experience is that if you come to a complete stop for more than a few seconds you have to tap the gas or depress the Cruise Control button once to resume driving.
Is the view that displays other vehicles around you only available when you are in HDA mode?
I have HDA 2 and it only appears when using this mode. Don't know for HDA.
my Kona (HDA1) asks me to put my hands on the wheel at 15 seconds everytime regardles of driving conditions. does thet change with HDA2 or is there a way to alter that behaviour in HDA1 also ?
No difference between HDA 1 or 2 besides the lane change feature. The rest may just be a configuration for the Ioniq 5. Depending on country, ioniq 5 also only comes with HDA 1, but it’s basically the same
I do not get why it's letting you keep the hands off for so long. My Niro EV MY2024 gives an alarm every 10-12 sek - even if I got my hands on. I have to move the wheel all the time. It's driven me crazy
Have a 2022 I5 SEL and am trying to figure out if I have HDA or HDA2..My display shows HDA when I activate the cruise control...don't think it changes lanes like in your video...should I have HDA2?
Yeah you're supposed to but you have to activate the auto lane changes in the settings menu
@@TheIoniqGuy I did that but it still comes up HDA on the display..not HDA2...Enjoy your videos
Lane markings: I found the same with snow and wet lane repairs.
I love your videos and have been watching a while! Could you please consider trying to find some original 20 inch wheels and tires, driving on a crappy road and comparing them to your own? We all know the difference in consumption but i have yet to see content with opinions about comfort and such
I couldn't get my Ioniq 5 SEL to do auto lane change no matter how hard i tried on freeways, just disabled it finally
It's very picky with how much input it wants when you try to do it. If you turn the wheel too much yourself it automatically disengages and let's you do it
Sad that people get confused with Musks marketing. There’s a huge difference between “full self driving” vs autopilot.
Autopilot hasn’t received meaningful updates in years.
FSD is getting all the attention. But it is not self driving and not full. Now they’ve changed the name to “supervised full self driving”. The supervised part contradicts the rest of the name. Can’t be supervised while claiming to be self driving.
THANKSSSS!!!!!
So what exactly is the reason that the 2023 model is ditching some of these features?
Are they doing it for the US models?
Supply chain issues. Can't get enough sensors and chips. Edit: Also why they haven't been able to supply these cars to more States. I had to wait 9 months after doing a pre-order and was only #30 on the list for all of Canada.
That’s not true about it only being 1.5 autonomy because it doesn’t do a lane change 😂 it’s level 2
would be nice to see how this performs in a traffic jam
That’s really where is shines. Stop and go is no problem. You can more or less take your hands off the wheel and pedals.
Have you become more confident with the system? You looked scared to death in this video.
After two years, I'm very confident. You just have to know its shortcomings and when to not overtrust it.
Split second lane changes, speeding, passing on the right?
Thumbs down.
What the hell are you even talking about?
