    The thing not being discussed.
Our waterways were managed and rivers dredged to keep them clear so that they could handle water levels.
This stopped being done and that equipment was sold off.

    • @RandallSlick

Nonsense. That's a recipe to remove topsoil from uplands into the sea at the fastest rate and the law of unintended consequence will ensue. Beavers upstream and trees on the uplands is the answer, but apparently vested interests don't like that and they're rich enough to lobby governments.

@user-yv2cz8oj1k ......a few years ago my sisters gorgeous countryside home in england was flooded 3 times in one year ......the cause was due to rivers and ditches not being dredged for at least a decade.........she was unable to get insurance after 3rd claim......the house was originally valued at over 1 million but she sold up and took £690k for it.........the only folk who made money out of it all were grubby tradesmen ripping insurance companies off to do repairs charging 4 or 5 times what they had estimated.

Cleaning the rivers doesn't add enough capacity. It can help speed up flow but generally that's not great as there are people living the entire length of rivers so the water will arrive at anyone downstream of the storm so much faster.
We are at the stage where we simply do not have enough money or space to be able to build and maintain infrastructure for this unpredictable weather, so as others are saying we need to move where we live to higher ground. I'm not talking live on a hill top but living at the top of a river bank is no longer safe.
November has been very dry until this week, yet in less than a day we had over 80% of the average monthly (November) rainfall. People don't get it.

      right where do i start???
She bought the house with my father, in 1961, he worked on it, built an extension, turned it into the home my mother wanted, he subsequently died 16 years after they were married, yep ill do the maths i was 15, it was not long after the house had been completed, he was 37 and died of cancer, so even with that stone heart, can you work out why she's stayed there??
Anti flood measures were put in place by the local council, they amounted to an expanding gate to hold back water, around about the same size as a baby gate, the flood waters were up to my arm pits.
      It wont happen if they
Put a proper flood barrier behind the houses, no more than 100 yards long
Dredge the river and build up the banks like they used to do in the 70's
Stop pulling up trees for houses, trees hold ground together and retain water, releasing it slower, Houses and roads in their place aid in faster flowing water.
Clean the surface drains on a maintenance plan, not when someone rings in to say one is blocked.

Hello, thank you for preventing effect of global warming, Simultaneous production of electricity and chemical materials, fertilizers, and purified water is achieved using the enormous seawater resource, applying the real gas laws and magnetic properties of particles (paramagnetic and diamagnetic), along with their electrochemical characteristics. The design involves using seawater particles with a plasma jet fuel machine (patent pending which operates under compressed air). The results show over 80% efficiency with minimal energy losses in sealed and insulated water pools. Energy consumption for water purification and electricity production is reduced by more than 50%, resulting in lower prices and making this technology competitive with other power plants. It is also completely free from pollution. The system includes specific proportions of gases, including oxygen and nitrogen, and fuel particles dissolved in water such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and hydrogen, which can produce chemical fertilizers and ceramic base materials in coastal areas. Water is drawn from the shore during the summer to prevent disasters like forest fires and summer storms, which are exacerbated by the seasonal temperature changes and dry conditions, reducing potential financial and human losses due to fires and storms along coastal forests and fields. the machine produces electricity and water and fertilizer for 150000 people.

This is going to get much worse and unaffordable without ambitious targets on tackling climate change.
Without recording cause of homelessness as due to flooding, wildfires etc we have no idea of the growth in the scale of the problem. Data needs to include topography and the time it takes to obtain a permanent home.
The grim reality is some places might not be possible to adapt, for example Fairborne in North Wales is having difficulty getting a sea wall raised. The same will apply to other regions.

Fascinating how the British media has different standards depending where you live. A couple of years ago a few places in Scotland suffered flood damage and the media rightly asked queations of our elected Politicians about the effectiveness of Scottish government policies and the various flood protections were widely criticised. However by contrast in England & Wales a different approach is adopted. No Ministers responsible were put on media 'trial' with little scrutiny of Government policies or measures. In Scotland any disasters are blamed on the SNP while in rUK it is just down to climate change that no one could have foreseen.

I will bet that if you look at the demographics of these places that are flooding, lots of green belt areas have been built on adding to the problems of flooding.
When they build on these green belt lands near rivers, the rain water , especially heavy rain fall has nowhere else to drain but in the rivers causing them to flood.
It’s not just climate change it’s trying to build more and more houses in a country that is not big enough to sustain a growing population from home and the many migrants that are coming into the country. In the old days when a lot of families were large like 6+ we could sustain that because the life expectancy was not that long because people we’re dropping like flies because the NHS wasn’t that good. But from the 80s the population has increased ever since and there’s only so much land to go around on an island surrounded by water with many rivers and mountain areas that get top heavy with snow and when that melts the water has to go somewhere.
Just look around the country and there’s more places flooding than there ever was back in the day , and all of these places are near rivers , massive housing estates going up , small industrial plants being built and mountings close by . Do the maths and you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work it out .
