Personally I didn't realize what it entailed until 4 x 11. I though it was something like took a blood sample but nope it's so much worse.
Despite all the criticism this season has been getting, this is still probably my favourite arc in the series so far. It just hits different imo, especially with Eri, an innocent little kid, being at the centre of it all.
MHA has had its fair share of darker moments so far, but learning about what Overhaul is doing to Eri was by far the most disturbing for me. It would be bad enough if something like this was done to a grown adult, but the fact that Eri is a young child just makes it so much worse.
You said it. This series is not afraid to GO THERE.

I remember when I read that volume of the manga I actually had to close the book for a bit after that realization.
Aizawa’s speech to Deku is probably my favorite moment of the series. When you think about it, he was the first adult to intentionally give Izuku a chance to prove himself; his mom didn’t think he could become a hero when he was younger, even All Might didn’t, and remember All Might only changed his mind because he COINCIDENTALLY saw Izuku save someone, he didn’t intend to give him a chance to prove himself.
But despite having doubts of his own, Aizawa gave Deku a chance after some (admittedly harsh, but valuable) advice and it motivated Izuku to act smarter, and he managed to impress Aizawa in the process. He’s also the first person we’ve seen stop Bakugou from bullying him (and the only person I’d I remember correctly).
So it makes sense that Aizawa’s input would mean a lot to him.
Aizawa’s tone here is really fascinating too (major props to the VA). The words he’s saying seem harsh and almost critical at first, yet his tone, body language, and even the lighting of the scene are all soft/gentle/reassuring.
If you asked me to show ONE scene that encapsulates Aizawa’s character entirely, this would absolutely be it.
He tries to get Izuku to be smarter and more careful by using stern and logical words, but his tone and demeanor is reassuring and kind, and the little fist bump shows that he respects Izuku to some extent.
(There’s also the detail that, as far as I can remember, Aizawa has only nicknamed three people in the entire series; Shuzenji is “the old lady,” Nedzu is “the rat,” and now Deku is “problem child.” Maybe I’m reading too much into things but isn’t it interesting that the only other people that get a nickname from Aizawa are ABOVE him in the hierarchy of UA?)
It’s so obvious here that he not only cares about Izuku, but also RESPECTS him as an equal (not as a pro hero obv but as like a human being), which is something Izuku doesn’t fully get from any other adult IMO.

Overhaul has one heck of an overpowered quirk. It's essentially alchemy without the drawbacks of the taboos. Crazy how he uses it to rebuild Eri after they harvest her cells
Well, I imagine he definitely had to fine tune his control so that he wouldn't make mistakes. Odds are he made a lot of abominations in his youth😬
I think some people forget this little interaction between Overhaul and Eri. When he started to take off his gloves it was a warning to her "if you don't come with me I will kill them" Eri left to protect Deku and Lamillion from Overhaul.😭😭 poor Eri we love you baby.

Something that drove me absolutely insane during the discussion of using Nighteyes quirk is that no one mentioned that if he just exhausted his only use on a random hero every day, trying to get info that the person themselves would ultimately end up getting anyways, then he wouldn't have it if he needed it later, and considering how we end up seeing him use it later in the season that would have been a massive deal
The way Montana is reacting to the whole Eri situation already, I can't wait to see how she'll react to certain future revelations and especially the big finale of the arc.
Eri and her extremely unlikely future father figure is one of my favorite things in the show.
Unlikely father figures (e.g. Wolverine) is a comic book trope that I love. A lot.
It's not just that he's torturing a little girl. It's who the little girl is to him that makes this so disturbing.

Aizawa is amazing. Out of all the superhero teacher characters, he's one of the best and deliciously flawed.
One argument I never see entertained for some reason about Nighteye’s quirk in the way they talked about it here for prediction is this: he sees the future, not POTENTIAL futures. Even if he sees your future, you have to go out and do the thing for him to have that information. That’s exactly why he feels like he is locking people into their fates. It’s a paradox, and it’s why most writers avoid time travel and fate 😂
And he said himself, even if he tries to do or has the person try to do different things, the future always corrects itself for what he's seen to happen
Yeah to be fair any future he sees is probably better than the alternative since it factors in his own efforts to improve things in the final prediction- but once he knows it it's honestly fairly fixed
I liked how it was dealt with in the god of war game. The fates tell the future but it was based on things they already knew. They were essentially really good at "guessing" what will happen but it also meant that the future wasn't set in stone. Just extremely likely outcomes.
This has my favorite Aizawa scene ever. Made me fall in love with his character. He’s a sweet man under his rationality

Season 4 is my favorite season, and I have been loving your discussions about things. My personal thoughts on Nighteye's quirk are that HE is incapable of changing the future. Whether or not others can change it, He himself is not able to, and that makes it extra difficult for him to tell if it is possible or not, since his tests would all fail. But that is neither confirmed nor denied to my knowledge.

Terrible does not even put into words how psychopathic and mentally disturbed you have to be to even do a fraction of what Overhaul did to Eri. She didn't deserve any of the pain that she had collected over the years of torment and abuse. Utterly hate this man's guts.
You said it. I never really understood characters that people "love to hate" before, but after this second watch through with these guys, I get it. It feels GOOD to analyze just how much of a POC Overhaul is. He's gotta be my favorite villain
When you have a quirk that basically makes you the fullmetal alchemist without any of those moral restrictions, you start to think that you can reshape the world into your ideal image

Between them all figuring out how horrible Eri’s situation is and seeing Eri crying because she was finally touched in a kind manner, yeah, this girl needs to be saved.
The exchange between Deku and Kirishima at the start is most likely a quirk of the translation. The Japanese language uses a lot of questions that aren't actually questions.
God. The rescue Eri arc was so outrageously good.
Overhaul basically has the powers of Scar from FMAB, at the end where where gets bothe deconstruction and reconstruction. Except Overhaul can keep a person alive if he deconstructs and reconstructs them fast enough

Regarding the second question at the end: That teacher would have to know every individual students strengths and weaknesses and they're personality really well, to establish a curriculum that would utilize those strengths with maybe a few surprises to help strengthen the weaknesses. My opinion, coming from a single parent.
I have an unhealthy obsession with Dadzawa, (Aizawa acting kinda like a dad or just anything like that towards Deku) I just think its so cute 😭
Well last time was a feel good catch up on Kirashima, Uraraka, and Tsu as heroes. So that’ll obviously continue as the main antagonist plot starts to rear its head. Don’t worry it’s a pleasant conversation. I’m sure of it.
Ok I’m CERTAIN that Uraraka, Tsu, and Kirishima are messing with Deku on the way to Nighteye’s agency and not telling him they’re heading to his agency. I don’t think their heroes just told them “Here’s an unidentified address. Show up.” Rare for these characters sure but not in a way that’s mean spirited or anything. They even got to put an Abbey Road shot in there. Not a reference I was expecting but always happy to see Beatles appreciation.
But once you start seeing DOZENS of heroes gather for a case, that’s where the joking stops. A gathering of heroes on this level hasn’t been seen since Bakugo’s amber alert. I don’t know if I would say that this is also an amber alert for Eri, but it gathers all the heroes in the area. And when you see people like Eraser and Gran Torino, you should feel relieved, but it’s actually terrifying that they think these two are 100% necessary. Certain hero combinations are busted and you never think they’d be needed, but when they appear, it’s for the HIGHEST level of calamity.
Both of Nighteye’s sidekicks are fanmade designs. I’m sure everyone has been talking about Bubble Girl, but Centipeder is too. Bubble Girl is probably more used for rescue aspects to comfort victims while Centipeder just by the nature of him would likely get culprits to submit easy. Between the 2 of them I’m pretty sure they cover all 4 classes of hero. And with Mirio being a “symbol” in training I’m pretty sure Nighteye is trying to get him to be all 4 classes. When you think about the ins and outs of Nighteye’s operation, you can see how broken of a combo they all are.
Gran Torino is apologetic on Deku’s involvement because as of now Gran Torino serves a very specific purpose. Keep Deku away from the AFO investigations til he’s ready. That means the league, with the goal of finding Shigaraki who is Nana’s grandchild, Nomu investigations, and tracking down further allies of AFO. And since AFO likes to torture people, you want Deku AWAY from that. Personally I think this would fall under the “Successor needs to know” issue I always have. So the air is NOT clear with All-Might secrets and the inner circle of OFA is assisting in that. Details are FINE to keep him shielded from, but not telling him at ALL when he could so easily be targeted is NOT smart.
Aizawa reveals how his quirk works and he CAN use his erasure on heteromorph people, but their unusual traits just don’t disappear and act like there’s no nerves in them. (And like Tokoyami, some people could just have 4 arms without it being their quirk just because.) And I was saving this. If quirks function like DNA, that begs a line of thought. Certain powers change perspective/function as a result. OFA’s stockpile for instance. And this is how we know the stockpile has never ACTUALLY depleted. And why I say there’s no real way for All-Might’s stockpile to have run out but his body gave out at Kamino with him likely retaining more energy he can’t physically use. (And historically, OFA would never have caught up to AFO if it could lose energy.) This is why we know AFO still has every quirk he stockpiled BEFORE his 1st fight with All-Might unless he willingly gave it up. They beat the snot out of each other but they can’t do DNA damage to each other that way. And the BIG one. Todoroki. If quirks are DNA, who has ever heard of someone that looks more like their mom on the right side and more like their dad on the left? And that begs the question is Todoroki’s fire and ice EXCLUSIVE to the matching side? Likely NOT. Left handed and right handed quirks aren’t a thing unless there’s a visible signal on the body for a designated effect. And Todoroki’s hair has no effect on his quirk. And that’s a HUGE floodgate.
But then there’s Overhaul’s reveal. Nothing connects him to the quirk bullet other than the substance of the drug. And his quirk is DESIGNED for its very creation. He is essentially full power Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist with both arms tattooed for his power. And he’s using it on Eri to dissect her body for this bullet. He’s tearing her apart to do this. That’s why there’s an operation table in his base and why he’s said she’s the root of his plan. That…is HORRIFYING. And then it dawns on Mirio and Deku what they had let slip through their fingers and why Deku was 100% correct to act when she was in his arms. You do NOT give children back to highly possible abuse if you’re unsure. They need to be in someone else’s custody while investigation occurs. And Rocklock is NOT happy they are explaining this operation to children. This isn’t a big street show we’re about to watch.
Nighteye kinda gives insight on his trauma of using his quirk Foresight as well. I’m going to say this right here. Almost EVERY limitation on his quirk is self imposed. The 1 hour of use, and I’m pretty convinced the one a day is too. (He mentioned he could have used Foresight on both Deku AND Mirio after they reported Eri’s existence. Probably because he doesn’t trust Deku if he did do that.) Only contact appears to be the actual trigger. And even then, there’s always foresight on himself which has never been taken off the table of possibility. And THIS is why his quirk gets into top 10 material. (It’s #9 under Erasure for me which needs no physical contact trigger) And he gives himself such strict rules about it for a reason. It’s the equivalent of stripping someone of their free will. And THAT is NOT something he wants to play around with. He COULD be omniscient with the effect looking through others eyes but intentionally DOESN’T so they can live their lives as they choose. This is why Rocklock is ticked Nighteye won’t use his quirk more than he does but caves when he sees how concerned Nighteye is. And this is why he’s such a gigantic wait and see/reactive approach to being a hero.
The kids are NOT taking this well. And this is EASILY the most emotional support Deku gets after an incident thus far and even then he got scolded by Rocklock during the meeting AND partially Aizawa after it. Deku and Mirio both told the Big 3 and the Class A work studies what went down with Overhaul in front of them. Uraraka of course chimes in properly telling Deku you did everything you could have under the conditions. STILL never missing her chance to be there for him when she sees what’s up. Aizawa comes in to tell them he wanted them off the field from the League involvement because the kids are on a possible hitlist and Deku FOR CERTAIN is on the PRIORITY part of that list from the camp attack. But he also knows between Kirishima and ESPECIALLY Deku, stopping them is not at ALL easy. And Deku would ABSOLUTELY get involved anyhow. So he lets them on the field personally so they can save her. While also saying PLEASE think before acting. Plus effort please Deku. PLEASE not plus ultra. Let’s NOT shatter and disintegrate your skeletal system entirely to save her. And Deku says ok. I DEFINITELY won’t.
And Nighteye remarks to Gran Torino All-Might and Deku are very similar. They have the HIGHEST levels of willpower. And to Nighteye, he just doesn’t know what they are really looking at when they look forward.
This is where season 4 shows off being one of the absolute darkest in the show thus far. And the investigation stake outs truly start into the drug operation.
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying about Quirks and DNA. With Todoroki, are you saying he can use EITHER Hot or Cold on either side of his body?
@@HaydrogenBombcorrect. If quirks are DNA and you have the ability to cast ice from one side and fire from the other, then the opposite is true too. That DNA is not constrained to one side of your body. That’s not how bodies work. Your DNA is the same for ALL of you not some of you.
You got it right on the money. Todoroki has quirk genes for fire and ice. So there’s no way that they would be on one side of his body when he visually has a normal human body. Todoroki is even MORE powerful than he seems. I got his quirk at #5 in the show for this high possibility.
@Kaempfdog If that's true, then I feel like him using each Quirk on one side or the other is another self-limitation, like hownyou pointed out with Nighteye.
@@HaydrogenBombnot exactly by choice in this specific circumstance. His trauma from Endeavor training has likely created a mental block. But the moment that he was using both sides at once, that was the moment that this possibility busted wide open. He can go full Endeavor or full Rei. And then there’s combining. He could use both arms for fire and both legs for ice for instance. I won’t go into just how strong this can get today but it’s RIDICULOUSLY overpowered. I can only argue 6 quirks being above it. (And one is a 3 way tie for very obvious choices)
I’m not sure if you’re still wondering Mr. Brave can pull out strands of his hair and cause it to grow and harden,for example he can create sword like weapons.
Downside is this is causing him to lose his hair. I assume that’s why he’s called brave.

I "like" Overhaul but definitely not in that meow context. He's in my top 3 villains of the show. Because I love what he's brought to My Hero from a storytelling perspective. He's also the main villain who actually has an extremely thought-out plan compared to what we've been introduced to so far in the show. My favorite arc as a whole by far, so far.
Even though the fanbase is divided on so many things, I love that everyone agrees on open thing: Protect Eri! She is a baby and needs to be safe
You said it. I like to think she's the ONE bright and clear spot in MHA's messed up fandom.
The more the show reveals about Overhaul, the more people should see why rescuing Eri in the ally was unlikely. The episode confirms that overhaul can use his quirk on anything, so the more confined the space the easier it is to use his quirk. Mirio lilely knew about the quirk beforehand but Izuku didnt and a single second of surprise is all that is needed for overhaul to kill. And this is without getting into the fact that Overhaul probably has at least 1 henchman watching discretely with some of the erasing bullets
This is why I can never take people who try to humanize Overhaul seriously..
I was just thinking about what Overhaul could do. They do say that the goons he dealt with were actually healed from all kinds of issues after he dealt with them. Think about that. How many injuries could he heal? Like Deku's arm. How many illnesses could he cure? He could be the greatest and most sought-after hero purely for healing people. And this is what he does with such great power.
This was one of the few episodes in all of anime that actually had me tearing up
for real about how stupid overhaul was. all he needed to do was put his plan on hold until he got eri to be a willing part of the plan by being a kind parental figure to her. could you imagine? the hessaikai not showing up here, and then, 10 years down the line, overhaul with a second in command Eri who actively helped him forward with making the quirk erasing drug?

Each time NIghteye has seen "the future" it hasn't changed and he's tried. So like Montana, Nighteye believes it's absolute. I, on the other hand, say bs to fate. I'll guide my own future. In the debate between fate and freewill, I'm freewill all the way.
As a teacher, I feel l'll let kids so risky "stupid" stuff supervised. Of course, so long as it's not dangerous or illegal. It'll be a good learning opportunity. If I was a parent, I would chaperone the first time they want to do some on their own and by that I mean go to the location, we split for a few hours and then meet up. Like practice for being on their own and making their own decisions. So the next few times, they have some idea of what to do and they can know they can call me and I'll come.
Shout out to MHA proving you don't need gore and sex to deal with mature topics. What Overhaul did to Eri is seriously messed up

ANIME SPOILERS
Eri as soon as her quirk activated killed her family because she couldn't control her quirk like Shigaraki. Only her mom was alive who gave Eri to her grandfather the hasaikai boss. Eri was then tortured and killed (revived afterward). Shigaraki killed his entire family because he couldn't control his quirk. He was abused by his dad so after the rest of the family died he purposely killed him. Shigaraki was then taken by AFO as a child and nurtured into hating all heroes and becoming a villain. I think that being tortured, killing your family, and being abandoned as a child is worse than being abused, killing your family, and being raised to be a villain. I haven't read manga yet so I think that unless something worse happens in there my point still stands.

Shigaraki wasn’t just abused. He was his father’s release for all the anger and hurt that he felt towards his mother. Shigaraki’s desire to become a hero only made the treatment from his father worse and he had NO idea why. His father basically tried to beat the dream of becoming a hero out of Shigaraki. He had no one to support and protect him and just when family members finally grew a spine, Shigaraki’s quirk kicked in. How did his quirk kick in? It kicked in by destroying his one sense of comfort first, the family dog. Then his sister, who if I remember correctly, had come to apologize for getting Shigaraki another smack to the head for something she did on purpose. Next, his mother, who was the weakest form of support that he had. Then to top it off, when his father saw what had happened, he gave Shigaraki a beat down with gardening tools until Shigaraki snapped, realizing that he finally had the power to protect himself. THEN, in rage and grief Shigaraki destroyed the whole house. After that, he was alone on the streets. No one lifted a finger to help him, preferring to leave it to a hero. NO Heroes showed up….not one. Society turned its back on this little boy. That is all horrible, but for me that’s not the worse part. Yes, AFO did pick him up off the streets. But why did he do it? What AFO did was not random or from the kindness of his heart. It was all calculated to hurt All Might. If Shigaraki wasn’t Nana Shimura’s grandson, he may have been left alone to fend for himself for quite a while. AFO manipulated and twisted Shigaraki’s sense of reality and desires to conform with AFO’s goals. Shigaraki became a puppet…figuratively and sometimes literally. Who knows where he would have been had someone stopped his father from the abuse, or if his mother had packed him up and left, or if some actually gave a damn and helped a homeless child. And don’t get me started on the hands….how sick and twisted was that for AFO to use THOSE hands?
Ngl if they had tried to save her without knowing his quirk they would be dead
As painful as it is, I think they made the right call. Trying to fight Overhaul near a busy street? That would put a lot of civilians in harms way.
31:25 I think Montana is saying that Nighteye might see someone die 59 minutes from now but they wouldn't see 1h and 30seconds from now when CPR is successful in bringing them back to life.
Before watching MHA, I named my dog Eri....and this just makes it so much harder to watch. 😢

@@HaydrogenBomb if it helps, She's a Shiba Inu and I wanted to use a Japanese name, and Eri means "blessed prize" wanting a Shiba Inu for 5 years and finally getting one, I thought it fit. My friend however had watched the show and now makes fun of me everytime the character Eri is brought up

It's really strange that the police aren't running this investigation and this briefing the way they were the Bakugo rescue operation. For how hero-police collaboration was presented earlier in the show I would expect the police to be making the big-picture decisions on this. You know I never understood characters that people "love to hate". If there's a character that I dislike, then that's it.
But after this episode on this second rewatch, I think I understand, now. Overhaul is a character I love to despise. It feels GOOD to observe and analyze just how much of a human piece of crap this guy is. 😠😡😤

It is frustrating the way that Nighteye acts due to his quirk. Even IF what he see with it is an absolute certainty, NOT using his quirk wouldn't necessarily prevent that outcome, he's just choosing not to use it because he doesn't want to feel guilty.
