Sleeper agent is one of my favourite art. I even have a pianting of it. When I first saw it as a kid in 2000 it gave me this unsettling feeling and had nightmares for some time :)
@@GoodRogue xantcha and ratepe also apparently do the thing in the book planeswalker (i think it's that one) but it's also explicitly discussed several times that she's only a she because she feels that way, and there is no concept of gender for phyrexians otherwise? it's not clear how their physical relationship takes place lol
Reading into the old lore of MTG is such a delightful journey. Learning about Urza, Mishra, Dominaria, Mirrodin, Alara, the Elder Dragons, the original Ravnica, and the first trip to Innistrad is amazing and each has such depth and character development...and now we have The Gatewatch...damn it Wizards what the hell happened to your writing and lore development. Seems like they just gave up.
While I 100% agree‚ Urza and co's lore has some stunning WTF moments throughout the whole story *cough* powerstones *cough*. Honestly‚ the entire saga could use a facelift and I'd cream myself for a return to the Brother's War‚ Ice Age and Weatherlight.
@@papanurgle8393 I also love how they wrote Urza as more of an antihero than an actual hero. The dude made some fairly messed up choices and many innocents had to suffer the consequences of his actions. It made him far more "human" and relatable as a character. Not sure where they can take the Weatherlight story from here though. Maybe a seige on New Phyrexia (but without the Gatewatch, haha)? Throne of Eldraine is giving me some hope that Wizards is putting the Gatewatch on the backburner. I do wish they would come out with another in-depth book series. A WELL-WRITTEN ONE, lol. But, I may be asking too much there.
With seiben gone, someone throwing some good lore videos out there will fill a need. And by the way, i like that you're becoming more and more professional in production and in brand as the magic historian. Keep up the great work!
Awesome job on this video as well as straight forward easy to understand presentation! As we all know, MTG is not only the best cardboard rectangle game ever made, but also has a very deep awesome story to make us love the game even more. ALL THE FLAVOR!!
I can see K son going ham in mono black edh. All you need is aetherflux reservoir and any black draw engine plus Swiftfoot Boots to swing for lethal, or blood artist, or Bolas's citadel, not forgetting aetherflux Reservoir is it's own win con. So many evil play lines the card enables... Great video btw Purp
The armor depicted on the card Blind Seer makes me think that Brink of Madness is depicting not Kerrick, but a wizard ("the Fools") finally witnessing what he has done within the time bubble.
This video is a great example of how good the Magic story used to be. Much darker, much more complex, and much, much more complicated. The story aspect in MtG today pales in comparison to the story of the past in terms of overall quality, and that is a really sad thing. Great video. Looking forward to more.
The whole Tolarian Academy arc was one of my favourite stories in MTG, and Kerrick was always my favourite part of it. Even named many RPG characters after him in those days. Equally surprised and excited to see him finally get the spotlight.
And how it was released fits in perfectly, the phyrexian mana in a subset, throwing a new mechanic on an old character, so much depth. With all the crap that goes on on the internet between WotC and the customer base, cards like this are what keep an old school player like me buying new cards
Wait... Did Teferi lowkey learn time manipulation magic to possibly age himself up to seem more attractive to Jhoira? This is definitely my head canon now! LOL.
So, I calculated it, and it a minute equals to a year, that makes it 525'600 years for 1 years, which means 5'256'000 years for 10 years. That's literally over 5 millions years! So yeah, that fits for "unlimited time."
Love this video man gonna share it to my following on IG. Just wanted to let you know that I know your gonna be cutting back on MTG due to the direction the company is going and all, but you make really great content and I always look forward to listening while at work. Maybe you could just only cover the lore and the parts of magic you like. I myself have been trying to get away from focusing on everything because there has been so much negative lately but there's also been so much good too. You gotta do what ever makes you happy though. Just hope to keep seeing great content thanks man.
They should redo the entire Urza storyline with a few custom sets. Brother's war is beyond badass‚ and too often left in the dust. Not to mention that it would bring the old lore to a new generation of players.
I feel like in story K'rrik would consider himself the son of Yawgmoth because of how much he did on his own. He may have felt he was the closest to Yawgmoth being able to create and manage his own mini world. Wild.
Either the blind eternities and the mortals can't travel through it was after the Thran or the book made an oopsie. Because there is a planeswalker that Yawgmoth meets and she takes him through the blind eternities which is where he finds Phyrexia originally. Also is it ever discussed who actually made Phyrexia? It was an artificial plane made by some planeswalker who was massively powerful even back then.
Walkers use to be able to do a bunch of crazy shit‚ including planeshifting others into the eternities and crafting pocket dimensions almost on a whim (though even then Walkers abilities were incredibly inconsistent).
@@papanurgle8393 True enough but wasn't didn't the mending and such happen after the battle between Phyrexia and Dominaria? So shouldn't Urza have had the same crazy powers as past Planeswalkers?
More lore, more lore, more lore! Hearing about how stupid of a company Wizards of the Coast is is all fine and nice and informative and frustrating, but hearing about and learning about the deeper stories behind Magic is what makes the game have even more meaning to me. Thank you, Professor Purple.
Question - what you've just summarized - is this a part of any book? I am interested in reading about K'rrik, Yawgmoth and New Phyrexia but you also had me curious about creation and purpose of Karn. What books should I read for that?
I think it's still pronounced "kerrick" as the apostrophe would denote a pause, being k-sound rrick. I always envisioned that he told Jhoira his name, and she heard "ke-rrick" with the softest e possible, and made it kerrick.

Badass story what happened to Magic Writing?
Wow you should do more magic history. I loved it
I love these types of videos. Some of your finest work!
Same, thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Cool
Brink of Madness.
The art shows an aged Academy Researcher, alluding to the fast time bubble that Kerrick was stuck inside of. The hint is the outfit.
and this is why i will always believe a mtg animation need to be from this lore and not from the gatewatch
*sees more than 20 minutes of lore*
Oh this is gonna be a juicy story, I can already tell. :3
Should cover the brothers war start to finish!
Let's all reminisce about the good 'ole days when WotC could write a story...
Thanks, Purp!
Sleeper agent is one of my favourite art. I even have a pianting of it. When I first saw it as a kid in 2000 it gave me this unsettling feeling and had nightmares for some time :)
Dude I love this lore
Thanks
I had no idea that sleeper agents were eunuchs. Great video Mike.
Are you still a eunuch if you never had equipment to begin with?
Genuinely curious.
This man is a eunuch. This man is a eunuch. This man is dead.
But haven't Kerrick and Jhoira, like, done the thing?

super cool and interesting! The old storylines are soooo much more interesting than the latest ones. thanks for the vid!
That jhoira card seems like a fun commander. Cast her early, then spam a bunch of high cost spells a few turns later.

He’s pretty cool. I can see him being played with dark rituals etc and life gain n drains.
I had only put the two together as soon as you mentioned sleeper agent. As always, I'm loving the reminder of the lore!
Make more of the old characters finally getting cards. Good stuff.
Very well done. I really like these lore videos. Keep it up.

Yeah! One of my favourite old school mtg characters.
Love it Mike. Great job!
I would love to see Vilis, Broker of Blood lore.
There is virtually no lore about him at this time my man
I feel like in story K'rrik would consider himself the son of Yawgmoth because of how much he did on his own. He may have felt he was the closest to Yawgmoth being able to create and manage his own mini world. Wild.
"Idea, fellow Phyrexians. What if Sleepers but we made them not eunuchs. And hot."
"The Ineffable doth decree: promote this abomination!"
Never disappointed. Great video.
K'rrik is my current favorite commander.
Love the lore vid as always.

The lore was less consistent then I guess. Also it was befoere the mending, so planeswalkers had all kinds of wacky powers.
It's implies that the dragon they found dead in the core was the creator
Walkers use to be able to do a bunch of crazy shit‚ including planeshifting others into the eternities and crafting pocket dimensions almost on a whim (though even then Walkers abilities were incredibly inconsistent).

new intros great! the old one is fun but the new one oozes professionalism 😅
Which deck is he in ?
When you spend 300 million years preparing to take over the world and end up getting yeeted by school guards
hahahahahah, nicely put
Ok, so if Kerrick doesn't have a mother, who's flesh was used to create him? I need to know these things.
What happened to his stream?
the streams dont stay up afterwards in most cases
