I'm a weaver and was never taught this. I've watched a video of someone attaching a new warp to an old one on the loom in a mill factory but couldn't play it slow enough to figure it out. Now that I will be returning to weaving after a few years, I will use this knot for weaving and all of my other fibre crafts! Best explain I've found on UA-cam. I will think of the bunny everytime now! 😂

This is excellent - there are so many really unclear videos about the weaver’s knot! Some actual weavers seem to miss the point that although it ends up as a sheetbend, the whole point of the ‘weavers knot’ is the way you tie it with this quick ‘wrap it round your thumb and pull’ trick. Yes, the actual knot comes out the same way however you tie it but weavers have to tie hundreds or even thousands of these to ‘tie on’ a new warp to an old one, so the quick trick and being able to do it almost without thinking makes all the difference.

Thanks! I was about to say, that's what I'd call a sheet bend or becket bend, but never tied it like that. I can see where with practice this would be a lot faster, with threads rather than thick ropes. The reason for this knot in sailing is to tie two lines of different thickness (using the video's orange line as the thin one.)

Awesome. A lot easier than my boss showed me lol I work in a yarn factory. High precision yarn though, not knitting yarn. Stuff like Kevlar and string that goes in fire hoses and boogie boards.,

Thanks for using 2 different colored thick cords for the demo! But the best part is the bunny story to I can remember how to do it without the tutorial in the future! I also like that I can do this holding the cords in my hands instead of the other method of laying the cord out on the table. Well done!! Our bunnies don't seem to swim much in New England....

I've been looking around and seems like the Weaver's Knot, Sheet Bend, Single bend, ordinary bend, simple bend, and common bend are all the same knot but with different names (abok 262)

What are the advantages of a weaver's knot? When would one use it?

The weaver’s knot is very strong and won’t come apart. And it’s used to tie 2 pieces of yarn together. I made a video a few months ago comparing it to the Square knot.

I worked at a Denim mill in the early 90s. To become a weaver I had to tie 5 of those in 10 seconds. But its much easier with string. You sit in a chair and lay 5 strings cut equally on each leg. They time you. On day one of weaver training they show you the know then time you for fun. Takes most people 30 secs to a minute, but by test day you finish the 5 knots in about 8 seconds.

Hi! May I ask a question? :) Are there any usage differences between the weaver's knot and square knot? They seem both to be self-tightening, which is useful for joining two cords together, but I can't figure what situations each knot is best for. I've seen both recommended for joining thread/yarn

The sheet bend is a better knot than the reef knot, it won’t come undone so easily. The double sheet bend is even better.

What do you do if your long ends are already tied to somethign else and aren't free?

I think you’d need to tie another knot (I shall have a look to see which one) but the weaver’s knot is used to add thread to an end.
