Why You Should NOT move to Vietnam

  • If you have followed me for a while, you know I love sharing positive things about Vietnam. However, I don't want to just sugarcoat my country because that’s not how it works. No country is perfect, and Vietnam is still a developing country that has a lot of ongoing problems. So I decided to make this video to address some of the issues that foreigners complain the most about when living in Vietnam. Hopefully, I can manage your expectations before you decide to move to Vietnam and just later realized that Vietnam was not for you

Every time a horn honks in Vietnam an angel gets its wings. It's a wonderful life if you can deal with imperfect beings in an imperfect world. I saw the horrors of the Vietnam War and was petrified of returning in 2015 after leaving wounded in 1968. I found it to be a different country that I learned to love for the beautiful people and their culture. I left before the lockdown in 2020 and I hope to return and see my friends again soon. Vietnam will always have a place in my heart. Cam on Vietnam.

I was there in 1967-68 also, as a Marine. You and I had a different perspective then, and now we are old warriors looking back at an epic time of pain and suffering, and all I can say is all wars are terrible, and I wish only the best for the Vietnamese people going forward in peace.

That's such an amazing thing to be a part of something so terrible and now something so amazing. I really do understand how you feel about Vietnam. I currently work for the Western Australian government. Good money, good perks. But I've lost sight of what's the most important. Every time I've come back from Vietnam I'm a changed man for the better. It doesn't take me long to get bitter and twisted when I'm back in Australia.

I am an American who has lived in Hanoi for over 2 years. During that time I have been in 5 accidents on the roads, people constantly invade my space, the noise is, at times, unbearable and I can see the air and smell the water every time I go outside. That being said, moving to Vietnam is the best decision I have ever made and I have no plans to ever return to America or live anywhere else.

I’m thinking about expatting, too. Vietnam and Taiwan are both in the top 2. America is no longer a country for old men. The moral laws in my country have been sold out to the FED and those who follow another code. I can’t speak my word or my account will be canceled. One day soon, here in America you will be charged and arrested for anti Semitism because of what “they feel” and define who you are. I’m the hell out of here. The Vietnamese are wonderful people once you get to know them. One piece of advice though. Avoid the main tourism places. The rip offs there are getting as bad as in Thailand, especially in Saigon and Hoi An. Come and explore Vietnam....and enjoy the friendliness, incredible openness of the Vietnamese! You'll be glad you did, and I want to assure you that you will want to return.

I fell hard in love with your country at the start of the pandemic -- was on my way to the Philippines (from the U.S.) with just a 2-week stopover planned in Vietnam -- then...the pandemic struck!!! -- I was put in an army barracks for 2-weeks in HCMC (strangely, very enjoyable, and...strange) -- and the doors on the Philippines shut for good, but I was able to spend the next 5 months in Vietnam (Nha Trang, mostly) and was just really...smited? with how lovely, warm, complicated, challenging, and...frankly amazing Vietnam is. Now...now that borders have reopened, I'm returning (in May), to...of all things, study Vietnamese. (Big gush, this). Just really enjoyed your presentation. Thanks again. Cheers!

I'm planning to move to Vietnam after high school so thank you for honestly sharing! Tbh I think it'll all be annoying but I'll get used to it and I'm excited.

I went to Vietnam in 2009. I'm going back to Saigon next year.
It was one of the best trips I've ever done. And I've been to Hong Kong, USA and Europe.
Vietnam has something in terms of freedom and the lack of a nanny state that the west has lost. I hope that hasn't changed.

I missed the lantern festival in HoiAn, the thrill of walking on the Golden Bridge in BaNa Hills ... the beautiful chaos of Ho Chi Minh City, the amazing authentic Vietnamese food and the magnificent scenery of Ha Long Bay! It is so green over there, unforgettable! I missed ... almost everything. Indeed.

I'm not sure I support a motorbike ban. Motorbikes provide cheap transportation to millions of people. More sensible would be to require catalytic converters on new motorbikes that are sold. That will eliminate the exhaust pollution problem.

Exactly! Euro 6 emission standards should be implemented. E-bikes are also not a solution, because the primary source of electricity in Vietnam is coal.

@@kippsguitar6539 I just looked it up. In Vietnam, 8-9,000 people (total) killed in traffic deaths each year. There are always people willing to take away other people's freedom for their own good.

Vietnam is a really special place. There's really no reason for any reasonable person to dislike it, in my opinion, but I guess I just enjoy being around noisy, friendly people who know how to take life as it comes and make the best of pretty much everything. An open-minded person from any country will find a million reasons to love the place.

I immediately loved the traffic here. It's just so simple in that, it requires you to actually know how to drive.
