Earlier this year I had told my husband my fond memories of sitting on my Greek grandfather’s lap as he tore open fresh figs for us to snack on. Then as a super awesome surprise for my birthday he bought me a fig tree. Oh yeah, he totally gets me!!!
Same thing happened to my brown turkey fig and Italian honey fig after the arctic blast. I thought for sure they were both dead but they came back looking just like yours! Time for some serious pruning!
Love watching your fig videos. Very informative and entertaining, and I thought your comment about Titus decimating your fig crop was priceless. The boy likes his figs, that’s for sure!!
I can’t tell you how I envy people who have well draining soil! I have solid red clay and it has taken me years to get a few inches of good soil. I originally double tilled my garden plot and added large amounts of organic matter and it has just reclassified itself and 3-4 inches deep it is solid clay again. 🤷🏽♂️ The 10-12 days of constant rain we are going through right now is not helping the garden right now. I am praying that it doesn’t drown out everything. 🙏
He ate so many a couple days ago he got a belly-ache. He came out there and got him a sackful and I told him not to eat them at all one time, but he did. lol
I believe you'd find me and Titus lying in the shade of the LSU fig trees with our tummies full and snoozing like a couple of old raccoons. Good show as usual. Sure wish I could grow them. Have you thought much about bird netting?
Not much. It would take a lot of bird netting for all these trees. We've got enough figs to share with the birds. Just gotta be timely with our harvesting.
The figs I got from you are doing great. have a question ,when you built your trellis with cattle panels where did you get them and if it was tractor supply which one did you buy. thanks
I don't remember where I got those cattle panels. I've had them for a long time. Seems like I might have gotten them from a local hardware store, but can't remember. A cattle panel is a cattle panel though. They should all be relatively the same.
@@primeribviking3688 I don't run the irrigation once they go dormant in late fall/early winter. And then once they start budding in late winter/early spring, we'll go back to watering them.
Hey Trav, we ordered two Violette de Bourdeaux figs and both are healthy... not growing as fast as I'd like though. I have a black turkey and a Olympian as well. I have a lot to learn about growing them, would love to know your fertilizing regimene
VDB is a slower grower than Brown Turkey and Olympian. Some folks will say not to fertilize them in the heat of summer, but I've found I can get away with it as long as they are heavily watered. Just be careful. Ideally the best time to fertilize is in spring when they're putting on new leaves. You can use fish emulsion, an organic pelleted fertilizer, or some folks will use 10-10-10 sprinkled around the base of the tree. Start will small amounts and see how the tree responds. It's easy to add more, but you can burn them if you add too much.
You'd probably have to wrap the trees in the winter up there. White Marseilles or Salem Dark would be good options, but you'd want to grow the trees in a pot for a year or two and let them get bigger before putting them in the ground. An older tree will be more cold hardy than a young one.
Can you talk about dividing your figs? I have a couple of trees that are very well established but they are climbing out of their area. Can I divide them like rubart?
Be careful selling your jelly in CACAfornia, as they have some terrible laws that are against people selling home-made products. I don't know what it covers, but we used to be able to get lots of great Mexican food that we can't get anymore.
That's why you get the hell out of California like I did two years ago, best decision I ever made. But don't worry South Carolina I left the crazy at the border.
If you're not going to prune them and just let them grow, I'd give each tree a 15-20' diameter. I space mine much closer because we aggressively prune them for cuttings.
Look at the leaf difference noted on this blog: worldofgardenplants.com/celeste-vs-brown-turkey-fig-tree/ The leaves on that big tree don't look like a Celeste leaf.

Every fig video you launch sends me into bankruptcy 😂

Great filming, nice presentation, thank you my new friend for sharing 👍
Great to freeze and use later in smoothies!
Trees look great!
I always enjoy watching your videos Lazy Dog love your property and most importantly you beautiful fig trees 😊👍🇦🇺 Adam.D from QLD Australia 👍

Check out Charles Dowding's no dig method.
Masha Allah, Tabarak Allah, something nice and good
Those LSU figs are great.I want to order some next year,I moved and left my figs trees.
Great informative video Travis. If Titus eats figs as fast as he was eating that tomato last year, he’ll clean a whole tree down in an hour. 😅

Amazing looking fig trees ! Travis, do you use a separate well for your figs and garden ? Thanks for the video .
Same well.
@@LazyDogFarm Thanks for the reply.
What's a good variety that dries well?
I've never actually dried any, so hard to say.
@@LazyDogFarm ok. Another question: how much do you water the fig in the off season. It can't be 30 gal a week all year right?

@@LazyDogFarm fantastic thanks. Hopefully I dont kill the ones I just ordered from yall
Oh no the Titus bird is brutal on the fig production. 😂

Question so you said they are sweet can you put then i in the juicier and use the sweet juice to make tea? Since you said they had agave in them.
They have a hint of agave flavor to them, but it's not actual agave. I don't know that you could use them as a sugar replacement.
I think tiger figs are probably my favorite
Hope you show the pruning of that tree when time comes!
Will do!
Trees are looking great…
Thanks!
When do you stop watering?
Usually once the trees go dormant.
Collecting these different varieties of figs can be quite addictive as my stack of bags of compost, mini-pine bark nuggets and perlite will attest.
It certainly can!
You told me so much, I could no fig-ur it all out. 😉
Im wanting to grow a couple fig trees but i live in central indiana zone 5b is there a variety that is hardy and i can grow outdoors here?

How much are your turkey fig trees?

PLEASE do a video on aggressive pruning of fig trees
I have one fig here in nebraska in a pot nice an sweet but raccoons love them to have to net tree 😂
Can you talk about dividing your figs? I have a couple of trees that are very well established but they are climbing out of their area. Can I divide them like rubart?
You can take cuttings and propagate them. Here's how we do it: ua-cam.com/video/Jl_juPam8fc/v-deo.html
Every now and then, we've seen foxes getting in our turkey figs.

What's the closest you'd recommend growing these in a row?
10-15' apart ohio recommended. Look at the size of his neglected brown turkey and you will see why they need that much room.
If you're not going to prune them and just let them grow, I'd give each tree a 15-20' diameter. I space mine much closer because we aggressively prune them for cuttings.
Oh boy, just making us poor northerners jealous!
Is there a fig tree that could be grown in a large container?
Yes! This variety here doesn't get that tall and is great for large containers: lazydogfarm.com/products/violette-de-bourdeaux-fig-tree
Did you eat that fly at 12:30 - 12:31
Didn't eat the fly, but hard not to accidentally swallow a few gnats down here this time of year. lol
That’s a Celeste fig not a brown turkey

Well prune it way back and you will have brown turkey figs starts coming out of your ears.😂😂😂😂
I gotta stop watching these videos. Bought some black mission seeds 3weeks ago. Already wating for my Chicago Hardy to come in next week.
Lol Run it over with a lawnmower it’ll grow back very vigorous trust me
Thanks but no real secrets for big, delicious fruits.
Then there are the non-delicious huge fruits that get elected.
