      @@willyboy4248 Actually the festival of nwaotam originates in abia and spread down south. So there are similarities in tradition when it comes to this specific festival.

      The name Nwaotam and the language spoken already tells you the background of the area. Nwaotam is Ndoki and the majority of Ndoki are found in Abia state. The Igbo dialect spoken in the Island by about 80 percent of its native inhabitants is Ndoki.
      About 20 percent is Ibani dialect of the Ijaw language spoken by natives of the island too.

      @@udob4939 Ekpe is Ibibio/Efik.
      Arochukwu/Abriba borrowed EKPE. Does dat make dem non Igbo & Ibibio instead ?
      Borrowed culture doesn't define a ppl's identity.

    Good one. Very commendable. We also want to see Boma Numé (Ogboro Numé) on the internet. Ibani traditional Christian songs are disappearing. We need to keep them for posterity. I grew up watching the highly revered Oké Ékpé masquerade of Dema-Abbey, hut sadly, I can't see even a single footage of it on the net. The songs sung by the four ébiris (Gbom, Ijérë, Achara and Aguma) have almost all disappeared. Chief R.F.P. Hart is doing his best to keep it alive, but I fear that the wrongheaded brand of Christianity that modern Bonny people practise, which demonises every cultural item we inherited from our forefathers has almost driven most of these iconic heritages into extinction. If your team can cover the Oké Ékpë play and document it for generations yet unborn on UA-cam, it'll be to your eternal credit. More power to your elbow, brother.

      They are not. what they both have in common is the Ukemkpa Nwaotam, which started from Ndoki, to Opobo & came to Bonny.

      How did the Culture spread to Bonny ?
      Did Ndoki colonize Bonny at some stages of their interaction?

    • @Banigostv
      @Banigostv  3 роки тому +1

      Ndoki did not colonized Ancient Grand Bonny kingdom at anytime my brother. This is a brief history of Ukemkpa Nwaotam...
      The Ibani (Bonny & Opobo) tradition has it that the Nwa-Ottam originated from a dark mythical grove in Mkpajekiri around Ohambele Ndoki. By this time, the Ndoki native, which included the Ottam tribes men, had started serving this 'Mmoh' gods believed to be heterosexual; and would organise dance during a season of the year.
      It was at these instances that Opobo people of the Captain Uranta family adopted the cult of Nwaotam called 'Ntuma Mkpa' and then ferried the male native original totem (mummified Nwa-ottam head) through Azumini river to Imo river, then to Queen town in Opobo by 1920 on the authority and assistance of King Arthur Mac Pepple, the then Amanyenabo of Opobo kingdom.
      It was from Opobo that the Bonny Nwaotam Society was found with the likes of late Alabo Eugene MacPepple and late De Brownson Oko Jaja led the first delegation to set up the "Uke Mkpa Society' of Bonny sometime in the mid 1940s. The play found its way with large presence of Opobo and Ndoki people at Andoni, Egwanga, Aba, Lagos and Port Harcourt. At Bonny, Egwanga, Aba, Lagos and Port Harcourt, it's displayed on 25th of December except on Sundays.
      Have i answered your question? You can google, research and read more about the history of Nwaotwam. Thanks!

      @@Banigostv The Ndoki people are actually related to Bonny because a lot of Bonny People move down the hinterland (Hinter) to settle with the Ndoki people, Ndoki was the main market before egwenga was discovered. However the nwoatam was made carnival in Opobo with a lot of modification to include different groups. Ejesilem first, then Ugelemka (from the Ukempa) and the others. more are still evolving
