  • I hope you enjoy this video. This is my ninety fourth "WHATS IN THE BOX" kit review and I hope to be completing this model when i have the necessary skills to do it the justice it deserves in a bout 10 years time. I have a model collection/stash of 33-40 1/72 Spitfires which i am currently building badly for the amusement or to the annoyance of my fellow UA-camrs, As my competence levels are not sufficient to complete this model it will be held in reserve for when i deem the time is right. If you would like to see the of 33 Spitfires there is a link to my collection below. As a novice modeller my intention is to learn the various assembly techniques and skills required, especially that of painting, so as i can produce half decent looking models, I concluded the best way to do this is to start with something simple, personally i think the best way to learn a new skill is repetition; try, try and try again. Hopefully by completing these 33 Spitfire models i will learn a few tricks of the trade. Whilst doing this I am also hoping to improve my VERY basic UA-cam skills, so far just uploading these videos has resulted in tantrums of titanic proportions, yes unfortunately i am also techno-phobic.
Follow me on my novice modelling journey whilst I try desperately to overcome my midlife crisis. Questions and suggestions always welcome. Please like and subscribe and follow me on my ride!
Everything featured in this video has been paid for out of my own pocket. I am not endorsed by any person or company mentioned in this video.

Andy That sounds delicious and what a rare chance to have a model of it being delivered even greater. Love the bottles too. Cheers, Bob

Was not too fussed unfortunately Bob, never been a Brandy fan and i wont be changing. MIniart do/did a great range of bottles and crates, i have the lot including Champagne & Cognac which was an absolute bugger to get hold of.

A handly/easy way to paint wood, is to paint it light grey-brown in acrylic. Then, get some oil paint in a richer colour, based on 'burnt sienna'. Apply this in a thin layer. Now get a soft, clean brush and stroke across it.
This reveals the acrylic colour, and the brush stroke makes a nice wood grain finish. Super-easy and looks great. Give the oil paint a few days to dry.

I have a couple of sets of AK wood paints sets, though will have to try this way. I wont be getting on to this unfortunately too much 1/72 to get through, but an interesting kit and one for the future.

I used to be a battlefield tour guide in France. If I had a troublesome client... usually one who was too loud, talked over people, just lacking manners... I'd encourage them to follow lunch with a bit of the 'local drink' (they always drank).
A shot of Calvados after the inevitable Belgian beers would usually have them curled up in the back of the van for the afternoon. Everyone is happy.

LOL those Belgian beers can be dangerous, though sounds like a very diplomatic and cultural way of dealing with ner-do-wells.

Hi Andy.cough,cough.I need a drink, yeah mate , pull the other one. Just neck it my son. Anyway on to the kit. The heads can be replaced by Hornet resin heads. They have a vast range of heads with different facial expressions. These models will look lovely but you will have to practice using oil paints to bring out the best of their clothing, then some subtle dry brushing will highlight the creases and folds in their clothing. Figure painting isn,t reall model making as such but more like artistry. Its very difficult to make them look human but it takes practice. I,ve been doing some figure painting in 1/72 recently and its time consuming but in the end they came out really well, all five of them. I have been doing some work on a figure this evening. I,m trying to get a sitting figure to fit on the back of a motorcycle. But the bike has a sidecar so squeezing his right foot and leg in was a challenge. I have also changed his hand position at which point I lost his right hand to the great abyss of the carpet, these hands are tiny as you can imagine. So I replaced his right arm altogether. He's pointing at the moment but once I get the main guy on the front it will look like he has his right hand on his shoulder, gee ! Then I have to put the guy in the sidecar. This the Zvesda R12 kit, I have already cut out all of the spokes to give the impression of speed. So now you see how far I go in detailing my kits. I have already added the cables for the brakes and clutch.so now the bike is done and now its the figures turn. When you do your 1/35th stuff you will be doing a lot of figures, so a little bit of practice here and there will help you hone your skills. The DUKW looks good. Big projects take longer than you realise. Sorry for the length of this one but good luck with them all anyway bud.

LOL that was genuine i normally have a glass of juice to one side, but had forgotten so had get the brandy, which i m not impressed with, but hey ho. Figure painting hmm yes well one of the main reasons i have stayed away from figures is for the reasons you have highlighted, a blob of flesh on a pilots face hidden in a cockpit is fine for me but these are different and this kind of thing will need to be addressed and practised at some point. sorry about your figures arm sounds like you have a carpet monster living in the shadows. I used the airbrush on the 1/72's and then i was hit with a severe bout of procrastination which lasted all afternoon and evening, hopefully it will have passed by the morning and i can crack on and hopefully get a few of the vehicles done tomorrow. LOL good luck with finishing your R12.

Another interesting kit ,it appears one's suspicions about Calvados have turn out to be correct on paper sounds good but in reality non 😭😭. Have seen Overlord film ,was quite good would not say it was an epic though.

An accurate description of my Calvados experience. the overlord film i would not recommend though was worth the watch as an observation of Overlord, definitely not an EPIC though.

Just found out the closest distributor is Canada for me. MiniArt is not in the USA. :)

Thats a real shame Juergen, I have a fair few Miniart kits, they do a really amazing range of figures, accessories, diorama buildings and interesting vehicles. i am yet to review any of the other ones i have, as they are being "saved" they will no doubt have you booking a trip to Canada.

The film had a score of 7.1 on IMDB so i had high hopes. Was very low budget, filmed by the Imperial War Museum, quite slow paced, poignant, melancholic, very late 70's arty, more character drama based largely around the main characters enlistment and build up to D-day. relied heavily on archive footage which actually blended surprisingly well as was shot in B&W, but was lacking in any real non archive footage action. TBH would not recommend, but at the same time kind of worth the watch as very different, even though the ending was bad and kind of a cop out, though obvious considering the obvious low budget.
