Definitly Final fantasy 7 Rebirth. That is absolutely perfect, best action rpg system of any game ever. It is like Kingdom hearts just much better. Kinda missed that from this list :P
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, 100 percent. I would have ranked FF16 lower on the list. Probably a B. If it had elemental weaknesses or and the ability to switch party members, it absolutely would have been A for me.
@@GenesisVII for me it's FFX-2's. I prefer more turn based than action-rpg and I think X-2 was the best at mixing it with some action elements without making it action based, it had a good balance between battle speed and full control of your party.

I have to say Rebirth is the most enjoyable. I recently played 16 and rebirth. I enjoyed 16 but when you play Rebirth you just notice how much more fun it is. So easy to combo switching characters.
Best battle system square has ever created Imo. They simply nailed it with Ribirth. Shame only that the game is pretty easy, so you don't actually need to explore its system too hardcore (at least on a first playthrough).
@@NikoCat11what I will say though is that if you don’t understand the Real Time ATB system then you will get your ass kicked by Remake and Rebirth. You HAVE to learn materia combos to stand a chance against some bosses (like Gi Nattak or Hell House). And although you might not count it, hard mode in both games turns them both from being an action hack and slash with a bit of strategy game into a full on strategy game with a mix of dark souls. Nothing is forgiving in Hard Mode, everything is super lethal and will kick your ass if you don’t come up with a plan to deal with everything they may throw at you. Understanding the materia system to its core is crucial to beating hard mode. That is in addition to the limited MP you have in hard mode which completely removes spell spamming as the only way to recover MP is through boxes or a new chapter in Remake or those two and additionally, chocobo benches in the open world in Rebirth. On that topic, I’m not sure which one I prefer, the high HP and MP from Remake but less opportunities to refill them or the less HP and MP from Rebirth but with more opportunity to refill them (because they nerfed the HP and MP Plus Materia into the dirt in Rebirth, 100% possible increase down to 30%). I get why they did it though(reducing the max HP and MP in Rebirth), you can restore hp and mp a lot more often in Rebirth as the amount of side content would mean that MP would run out super fast and not be available for the tough boss fights later in the chapter. What about you, do you prefer more resources but less chances to restore them or less resources with more chances to restore them?
I'd swap VI and IV, as VI is a better version of IV plus it has the Esper magic learning system. The one thing I didn't like about the FFX battle system is that it felt like missing out when you didn't swap in each character into every battle.
Besides the mentions of Blitz/Bushido/and Slot, the esper system had some extra applications in addition to being summons and teaching magic by literally being stat boosters when you level. Literally the precursor to materia. Also, and it's such a rare occurrence to actually happen (you've gotta be like at low health and it's some astronomically low chance of happening) but it did have limit breaks. Otherwise that, love the list and the depth you gave on this. Thanks. Cheers!!!

X's is good for bosses and unique enemies. Pretty much every single area has the exact same combination of enemies though so it becomes extremely routine. There's always the trio of agile monster, heavy monster and flyer. Replace one with flan every now and then. And it's just Tidus attacks agile monster, Auron heavy, Wakka flying and Lulu flan. So repetitive. You can try something else but it will only be less effective. Kimahri and Rikku are pointless outside of bosses and unique enemies. The bosses though, which break free form this routine work, yeah they're godlike and let the battle system shine.
9 should be a low B or High C battles are way too slow especially compared to its predecessors. The limit breaks SUCK...half the battle is lame animations from enemies...cameras zooming around.. 6 should be an A. The battle system is incredible up to the point the game breaks with Ultima. Always good to hear different opinions, but nah FF9 is fine where it is. It's a love letter to all the 2D games and it shows. As mentioned the gearing system is probably the best in the entire series, with items being useful for the entirety of the game between learned abilities and item synthesis. Summons are useful but not game-breaking. Magic is useful but not game breaking. Stealing items is actually viable and hugely beneficial. Considering how close the battle system is to the 2D games I don't really understand how you could have it lower on the ranking than any of them. Unless the slow pace drags it down THAT much for you. I also then wonder how you could let FF7 stay in S tier when killing Ruby weapon or other bosses just entails summoning Knights of the Round, or Counter MIME Omni-slashing for 10 minutes. The highest HP a boss has in FF9 is 65,535. That's only 7 x 9999 max damage hits. This makes ff9 battles often require strategy to beat and not just HP sponges. It certainly has negatives, which is why its not in S tier, but there is no way the slow battle pace and lackluster limit break system drop it 3 full tiers. Also feel like 8 is fine where it is as well. The junction system makes it way to easy to break the game if you know how to use it, and is confusing for new/casual players. You can get infinite Curaga's near the beginning of the game by simply refining Tents... I also don't think the draw mechanic is very fun, it's tedious, and many players struggle with actually using finite resources meaning magic is rarely actually used. Especially when the game punishes you for using them as the junction strength gets weaker if you don't stack spells to the 100 max efficiency. The limit break system is also almost as bad as FF9's requiring you to have characters sitting at low health near death just to use something that is worse than just abusing the Junction system.
@@CosmicRazberryyes the slow pace battle really drags it down, i remembered when i played 9 for the first time after finishing 7 and 8, i wondered why this game is so laggy compared to the other 2
IX has only two problems: trance being automatic, which is not really a big problem, more of a design choice, and its slow pacing, which is due to console limitations, not related to its systems. IX's progression is at its finest, and the ability system is top notch on the franchise. Much deserved A tier (Imo it's low S actually, but ok)
One thing i loved about 9s battle systems were the limitations they would throw in to offer challenge. For example fighting amarant only using zidane which makes you have to time your attacks to heal and deal damage with maximum efficiency, as well as the dungeon where you can't use magic. It was a really creative way to use a party that otherwise had very robust uses.
S- X, XII, VII A- IV, IX B- VI, XV, XIII, XIV C- VIII, I D- XVI I enjoy every Final Fantasy game that I've played. Still have yet to play II, III, and V one day I will
Wow I actually agree with you on many of these - only with slight differences - I'd put ix in B as I just found it rather dull and xii I'd put also in B as I agree with what you say mostly about the gambit system although I thought it was one of the positives - but the major positive in xii was the fast battle timing which made the grind much less painful - that for me deserves a bonus grade! I'm in full agreement on x being the best though - no question!
I agree with almost everything (as always) haha my only change would be swapping 9 and 12. I liked the Gambit system a lot, but I found 9 combat just too slow/animations took too long. I haven't played 1, 2, 3 so I can't really say that 9 is the worst combat in all 16 titles, but for me it was the worst combat of the Final Fantasy games I played. Also I didn't like the transcendence mechanic it was too slow and restrictive.

I'd understand ff XII being low tier if this was a story tier list, but battle system it's the best of all final fantasy games, if not all rpgs. I guess even now it's still ahead of its time.
Personally I’m not the biggest fan of customization. I prefer preset jobs that the characters are built into so IV is my S tier. IX is A. I loved abilities being gained through equipment but the trance system and slower atb knocks it down. VI and X are lower A. Again really liked how each have preset classes but not too far in each character can lose their uniqueness and I never found myself using their unique abilities. XII and XIII are both C tier. I like the license board for the TZA but both games basically can play themselves and for how the enemies attack, it’s a little difficult to fight back manually. Also I really didn’t like how bosses in XII would basically create new mechanics they weren’t really doing until low health. Auto-immunity to physical or magic attacks and sped up attacks were infuriating. VIII. It’s one of my favorite games in the series but the battle system is D tier. I found myself never wanting to use magic because it would decrease my stats. Limit breaks were very spammy as were the gf abilities. Just found myself attacking the entire game. XV/XVI…undecided because I’m not big on the action rpg genre. Magic was a pain in XV while in XVI fire magic hurt fire enemies. I enjoyed mini bosses and normal Clive boss battles but disliked eikon and normal battles. They just dragged on forever for the sake of spectacle. V and VII just putting in B. Had no issues with them but since they were more customizable, I didn’t have a strong opinion.
If I would attempt such a ranking, I would most likely do it the same way. Just Magic System or how the Characters generally get stronger wouldn't work out because each title is so different and if you would go by Level up Systems, you would have some titles where you can literally only say "Yeah, they do level up...thats it." while others do things differently and a bit less "obvious", like the sphere grit for example. And the same goes for magic system. While you have titles such as 7 and 8 where generally speaking every character can use every spell and they also affect the charecter itself, you would have other titles where most the cast don't even use magic. so yeah, you need to keep things broad in order to talk about every title more than a few words.
S: X, V, VI A: VII, IV, XII, IX B: VIIR, XIII, VIII C: III, I, XVI D: XV, II I value party based combat and none of the action combat games do it for me. Its not that I dont like action combat in general, if Granblue Fantasy Relink was a Final Fantasy game it would have been easy S tier. Also note XVI would be higher if the game better supported it. I felt no reason to experiment with builds, and death was just a free potion refill
FF8 would be an A tier battle system for me. It isn't an S only because it downplays the use of your good magic for most of the game as it is more useful for junctioning. The crafting system and GF abilities in 8 elevates it as well. The systems in 9 and 10 don't come close. FF12 has the best system in the series. FF6 is S tier with the espers. FF7 is B tier. The materia system works well enough, but it doesn't allow for as much customization as you'd think. The only advantage is that it makes you think twice sometimes before making a tradeoff between slots and stats on equipment. FF13 and 16 are hard C tier. They're too limiting.
I'm guessing the reason for excluding FF7 Remake and Rebirth is that wouldn't be fair to the rest? XD Imo Remake has the best in the series so far, and that's coming from someone whose favorite is FF4! I haven't got to play Rebirth yet so that could change, but Remake is def the best battle system so far Imo. I agree with your rankings though for the most part, except for 13 I'm not the biggest fan of the whole instant Game Over if your party leader gets killed even though you have others still alive thing.
Rebirth does to Remake what XIII-2 did to XIII...it makes going back to Remake a slog. Parries/Perfect Blocking is now a thing meaning do damage runs are technically possible. There's 3 boss battles with Cloud solo that are you attacking at the right time and regular guard is ineffective and you have to parry...AKA it becomes an extremely fast Dark Souls. There's a larger number of materia to experiment with.
@@yupiyaya Desperation Attacks were introduced in 6, they were just a very rare occurrence. With subsequent re-releases the frequency at which they appeared was increased. They were so rare that most people didn't know special attacks existed until 7. That's why we generally call all of these moves "Limit Breaks" and not Desperation Attacks. Even though other games use different names, Trance, Overdrive, Mist Charge, etc. But ask, why add a Limit Break system to only one of the older games for a re-release and not all of them? The answer is because the system was there from the start.
@@jaypro6269 You might be right. I did a bit of research and found they actually were in the original version of the game. I remember reading they were introduced later for the GBA version, but I guess that was fake. Have a good day! :)
I was going to disagree with you about using magic, Gen, but I thought "You don't need magic early on, but you can keep your 100 Curas and use them to heal while not using your Curaga that you junctioned to your HP stat." And once you get the abilities to turn items into magic, you can be a bit more loose with it. :)
I can respect your opinion based on personal preference and experience, but based on my preference ff8 and 13 are too high because they rely too much on turn to turn thinking, and ff12 is too low because I enjoy doing my character building and strategy making between battles, I like that after you manage the gambits you can just set the speed to 4x and go brr through the country side rapidly slaying enemies Also one of my favorite strategies in any rpg is grind for levels and simply overpower the enemies in the next area(s), games like ff8 and 13 don't allow for this because the enemies scale to your level or they cap your progression based on your story progress so you are always at a slight disadvantage which you need to make up for by executing every battle optimally or you suffer When I play rpgs I don't want to have to think during common monster battles, thinking should take place in the towns when I'm buying the best spells and gear and finding the best monster to level farm exp and ap on until my team is strong and can clear all random battles by mashing attack
S definetely needs to have XII and VII Ribirth. Ribirth actually has arguably the best battle system ever created by Square. Also, I missed XIII and X's sequels, as they have solid battle systems too (specially XIII-2, which has a much similar system for XIII, but done right this time). Also I would put VIII much lower, as it's battle system is pretty much the biggest issue people have with the game. Other than that, how can someone put XIII on top of XII is beyond me, Tactics would also be S and XV's is completely broken (definitely only FFvii Remake's prototype). (btw I know it's opinion, thanks for the video, it's all good ❤)
I know you didn't rank the FF7 Remake and Rebirth system, but it definitely S tier. I think you missed an aspect of FF6's esper system. When you level up with a certain esper, it boosts an accompanying stat. So any character could be customized toward whichever stats you want. My Sabin was probably my strongest magic user.
Nearly all your videos I've found myself agreeing with your tier lists for the most part. Until this video. I won't go into crazy detail, but i will say i don't think it's fair you gave some games credit for their contributions to the franchise, but not others, and i don't think it's fair that you didn't deduct points from some for their contributions to the franchise. Either way, we all like different things at the end of the day, and i look forward to the next video.
Final Fantasy XV has the WORST combat of all for me.. it has literally 0 tactics, summons are random one shots, it has no support spells, potion spam, auto generation, just hold O and you are fine. Its the dumbest of all. The demo had a much better combat system, before they totally dumbed it down
Im far too old for this . I dont want to play with other people I want to do my own thing alone. I want more FF 7,8,10 & 12 . If I wanted hack and slash Id go back to Dynasty Warriors . The FF spin-offs wernt great either .
FF 9 should be lower - the battle system is very slow and delayed, the trance system is so badly implemented that is often falls flat and most battles are designed in such a way that they either become pretty hard or way too easy depending on your passive abilities (f.e. if you have abilities that make to immune to poison sleep etc. some fights barely have any challenge left) It is a very basic system at best imo
I know you didn’t include it because you haven’t played it, but you probably shouldn’t include 14 if you’re not including 11. I’ve played them all and 11 would definitely be near the top
Can we agree 11 isnt a mainline and either is 14. Neither are accesable to everyone. Also having to lay a subscription seems a bit much, grabted theyve done amazing work with itm but i figured itlf you have a game pass or whatever and its on the higher subscription it should be included. We have far too many subscriptions nowadays.
If FFI is baseline, it should be ranked in the middle as all other games are developing off of that and would either be better or worse than that. For your setup, that would make it either the lowest B or highest C rank. Beyond that, even for how basic it is, you don't seem to know the FFI battle system at all. You went from saying there were 6 starting classes (correct) to 7 after you named all 6. You also said that the characters learn skills through their level progression. They don't as there are no skills in that game. Spells are purchased and are usable based on a character's class and how many spell slots they have available (as this was based of the old D&D system). There is nothing else. Classes have equipment restrictions, bit no other skills they can develop. Stat progession is all RNG (like dice rolls) when a character levels up: you can see this if you are playing multiple of one class. I'm not defending or trying to overpromote FFI, it is what it is, but there should be a better understanding of what it is.
The counting of jobs is just an error on my part, and it's very picky talking about the skills/spells as everyone that has listened as far gets it. Appreciate you going in depth though.
FF12 C but FF13 mindless battle system is B 😬 For me Personally is FFX and FF12 the best. The bambit system is cool cause 1. u dont need to use it at all if u dont want to. 2. u need to think about how to best set it up, its not brain dead like in FF13. If u dont set it up well, it can do stupid things or not do things at all 😁
I've seen this crop up a few times, I'm saying innovative. I'm British and we pronounce it different. Believe it or not there are 3 ways to pronounce the word.
Uh, no I don't agree with you. Man, are you kidding me with FF6 at B tier? It has one of the most customizable and best combat systems in the entire franchise. For starters, the esper system is fairly deep and fun. And allows you to pretty much make each character able to learn any spell in the game and customize each character build the way you want. It also had limit breaks before FF7. But the most important thing, every single character played differently when it came to combat, which fit well with their character and class and that alone should put it at S tier. You name me another final fantasy game which utilizes SF style button inputs. Every character plays completely different from every character. When it comes to their special moves. If anything, FF6 has some of the best combat. So yes, you are flat out wrong.

XII zodiac age is one of the best combat and progression IMHO, u might wanna check that out compared to the OG XII

Anything below ff8 is a crime to humanity
@@Ashenshugura RENZOKUKEN too sexy lol
FFVIII is a game you actually get to play, hope that clears that up.
@@USALeonHeart You know you don't have to use gambits to play 12. It is optional.
@@USALeonHeart they're both pretty great for different reasons
S: X, V, VI
A: VII, IV, XII, IX
B: VIIR, XIII, VIII
C: III, I, XVI
D: XV, II
I value party based combat and none of the action combat games do it for me. Its not that I dont like action combat in general, if Granblue Fantasy Relink was a Final Fantasy game it would have been easy S tier.
Also note XVI would be higher if the game better supported it. I felt no reason to experiment with builds, and death was just a free potion refill
We really need a main line final fantasy offline with the gameplay of the 14
FF8 would be an A tier battle system for me.
@Chelaxim Is this on all difficulties or only on Hard? I could imagine those Solo Cloud bosses to be a bit much for some if true.
If you think this, just wait to play rebirth, you'll be amazed. Best battle system by Square period, for sure.
Is 5 good. Never try it.since it rank so high maybe worth to try
I really like 5 and I think it’s well worth the time
I agree with 99% of this list good job
6 introduced the limit breaks to the series. Does it not get credit for that?
also didn't mention that Espers impacted stat increases
That's false. The one introducing it was 7. 6 got "limit break" like attacks in the GBA version of the game.
@@agranosclem i think he did mention that in passing when he said customize your characters.
Stranger of Paradise S tier
S tier protagonist, too 😤
Hello...is this the based department?
I can respect your opinion based on personal preference and experience, but based on my preference ff8 and 13 are too high because they rely too much on turn to turn thinking, and ff12 is too low because I enjoy doing my character building and strategy making between battles, I like that after you manage the gambits you can just set the speed to 4x and go brr through the country side rapidly slaying enemies
Also one of my favorite strategies in any rpg is grind for levels and simply overpower the enemies in the next area(s), games like ff8 and 13 don't allow for this because the enemies scale to your level or they cap your progression based on your story progress so you are always at a slight disadvantage which you need to make up for by executing every battle optimally or you suffer
When I play rpgs I don't want to have to think during common monster battles, thinking should take place in the towns when I'm buying the best spells and gear and finding the best monster to level farm exp and ap on until my team is strong and can clear all random battles by mashing attack
I actually prefer 13 & 8 for capping u or preventing u from being op in stats. It kills actual strategy and challenge to over grind.
In order, 7, 12, 10, 8, 2, all others
I pretty much agree with your list, however, ranking 6 as a B is gonna piss some people off lol
6 as a whole deserves to be in S, I just don’t think it’s battle systems and progression system is good on its own. But that’s just me!
(btw I know it's opinion, thanks for the video, it's all good ❤)
Ff13 and 8 are my secret favourites. My stated favourites are 7 and 10.
Games not systems.
Anyone agree?
X-2 and lightning returns should be s tier.. they are the sickest shit
You should add Tactics and FFVII Remake to the list (and both would be the top tier).
I’m so glad to hear that I’m not the only who thinks FF5 is S tier!
My favorites: FF10, FF7 rebirth, FF4 and FF12
You’ll have to let me know in the discord!
Ff 7 remakes battle system is the best of both worlds and very fun
Best battle system ever created by Square period, for sure

Final Fantasy XV has the WORST combat of all for me.. it has literally 0 tactics, summons are random one shots, it has no support spells, potion spam, auto generation, just hold O and you are fine. Its the dumbest of all. The demo had a much better combat system, before they totally dumbed it down

FFX-2 is the peak ATB system.
CTB is best 10 was so fun to master
Im far too old for this . I dont want to play with other people I want to do my own thing alone. I want more FF 7,8,10 & 12 . If I wanted hack and slash Id go back to Dynasty Warriors .
The FF spin-offs wernt great either .
FF 9 should be lower - the battle system is very slow and delayed, the trance system is so badly implemented that is often falls flat and most battles are designed in such a way that they either become pretty hard or way too easy depending on your passive abilities (f.e. if you have abilities that make to immune to poison sleep etc. some fights barely have any challenge left)
It is a very basic system at best imo
I like final fantasy 11 more than 14

This is the correct list. Anyone who disagrees is wrong. 😊
FFX-2 is the best in ATB category.
7 rebirth is SSS ULTIMATE
Hope remake part 3 has turn based so over the action combat
Oh, I really the remake/rebirth combat
I’ll give XIII an A.

wtf is ‘innotavive’ ?!?!
Innotavive.
You missed a bunch
i don't agree
That’s okay 😅
I would prolly put 9 in the trash bin... The trance system sucks and combat progression prolly the most boring in all of FF
FF12 C but FF13 mindless battle system is B 😬 For me Personally is FFX and FF12 the best. The bambit system is cool cause 1. u dont need to use it at all if u dont want to. 2. u need to think about how to best set it up, its not brain dead like in FF13. If u dont set it up well, it can do stupid things or not do things at all 😁
Yoooooo
Hallo!
Hello!
Like your list. But its innovative. Not innotiviv. 😊
I've seen this crop up a few times, I'm saying innovative. I'm British and we pronounce it different. Believe it or not there are 3 ways to pronounce the word.
FF XV is dog shit system. F tier trash.
Appreciate your opinion, good insight!
