A couple of hundred years ago stud fees for specialized dairy and beef cows were astronomical -- People realized that animals that could produce more and better meat or milk could make a suppler rich since people in cities could not keep dairy or beef cattle like the small farmers used to do.

It could be because they are stuck with it. They could have just put make up on the younger cast & trained them how to act at that certain older ages. The different cast sucks, the first & original cast were fun to watch.

Philip was arguably the most important casting of the show. Claire Foy was always going to get the most screen time as Elizabeth, but it was essential to find someone who could make Philip charismatic and memorable for each scene he was in, particularly since his part was significantly less screen time and his character needed to be equally charming, loathsome and sympathetic. Matt Smith hit it out of the park.
