- Originally released only in mono, a stereo mix of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction was first released on the Hot Rocks 1 CD in Europe and Japan in 1985. That CD has been out of print since 1995 (1997 in Japan) and the stereo mix has not been reissued. However, in 1966 a different stereo mix was produced that remains unreleased. While it is superficially similar to the Hot Rocks 1 mix, it features better fidelity, a better balance of the instruments, and a 3 second longer fade-out.
Great stereo version ..nice to highlight piano...thank you
I'VE HAD THIS TRACK ON LOOP
SINCE ' 1965 ' .....😇
First time I've ever heard the piano in this!
A real BAND!
Im trying to to isolate all elements and by running both channels in seperate extraction sessions, I think I can. But you gotta admit, everything is so clear in the 1st slate stereo mix
0:34 TO 0:36 That click! is that an edit? I thought my LP had a scratch in it even as a teen!
Fuzz box getting switched on.
This is the Original stereo mix on the 1980's import CD's.
No, the Hot Rocks 1 mix is different. This mix is unreleased.
Oldham hated stereo. The same as Dave Clark and Micky Most. Early stereo versions were omitted from Hot Rocks LP's. Actually Brian Wilson hated stereo as well. They weren't meant to sound that way. To me mono always sucked, unless it was only recorded that way.
He must not have entirely hated it by 1966. Aftermath and Between The Buttons were both mixed to stereo, and Back Street Girl and Please Go Home were fold-downs from stereo on the mono LPs.
And of course the 1964 Chess tracks were only mixed to stereo and folded-down for mono releases.
Brilliant mix. My new favorite! Well done 😂
Can hear Stu’s piano now.
@@mdumas43073 Yes. It may be Nitzsche playing.
@@BigSky1 It IS Nitzsche playing piano. I've had a running argument with friends whether there's a piano on this. It's "buried" in the mono mix. But you can hear it on this rare, true stereo mix......only available on the Japanese & European version of Hot Rocks' CDs & as a single to a few lucky 1980's American DJs.
@@donwargowsky4724This is an unreleased stereo mix, not the one on the Hot Rocks 1 CD.
This mix is much better than Hot Rocks 1 stereo mix. This mix could be tweaked a little. The problem with bringing up the other instruments is it diminishes the main guitar riff a little. There could be many mixes but could there be a great balance between the instruments (vocals included) and still sound like the real Satisfaction with that guitar riif, vocals, and a little drums. Sounds better each time I listen to the arrangement in true stereo….could someone out there highlight the piano more ..I really think it would sound so much better…..
In 1987 I purchased a promo CD of oldies remixes released to US oldies radio stations which included stereo mixes of Satisfaction and Get Off My Cloud.
I'm speculating that both of these songs were recorded on 3 track equipment, which were popular at the time, notably in So Cal where these 2 songs were recorded. Brian Wilson used 3 track equipment, and The Beatles 1964 Hollywood Bowl concert was recorded with 3 track as well.
If indeed 3 track was used here, there is not much that can be done with the mix other than making the sides 80/20 or 70/30 to decrease the dispersion. Digital cancellation techniques could be used if a source recording of isolated instruments can be found.
I heard this song for so many years in MONO that I never thought that the ROLLING STONES ever recorded it in STEREO ! Then a friend of mine told me that it was in STEREO on a German import entitled " HOT ROCKS 1 " . What a surprise to an STEREO AUDIOPHILE !!!
So this is official? Crazy to think they don’t keep at least one stereo version available for people, thank you for the upload!
No official release, unfortunately. ABKCO may not have this tape.
@@lukpac But the actual mix is official? I’d love to find the bootleg this comes from. I honestly prefer this one to the released stereo mix, a lot clearer and better quality.
@@NintendoCraft28 Not sure what you mean by "official". It was apparently done in 1966 by Dave Hassinger.
The source for this is Reel Time Trip, but the speed is slightly slow, the channels are reversed, and the EQ isn't as good.
@@lukpac What I meant by that was that the mix was done with the official multitracks, likely with permission from the studio. It's fun to hear some of the earlier Stones stereo mixes, some of which I like more than the mono (19th Nervous Breakdown sounds really good in stereo).
@@NintendoCraft28 Yes, these were almost certainly done by Dave Hassinger at RCA, where they were recorded.
Fun stuff Luke, reminds me to get out my old cd✌🏻
A local radio station played this version for years. Apparently, this true stereo version, which reveals the piano if you really listen, was given to many oldies' stations back in the 80s. You can't hear the piano at all on the more familiar mono version we're all used to hearing for decades. Yes Virginia.....there IS a piano on "I Can't Get No Satisfaction". Mystery solved !
Radio stations generally played the mix from the London Hot Rocks 1 CD, which is similar, but a different mix, with the vocals and piano/acoustic guitar higher in the mix. This mix is unreleased.
The piano can be heard in the mono mix, it's just quite subtle.
The acoustic guitar is more prominent in the stereo "Hot Rocks" mix.
Correct.
+Picked up the West German Hot Rocks 1 and 2 cd's today at a charity shop. Wow. They sound great.
Sounds Great Nice Stereo Version
Sounds good
How did you get a hold of this mix?
I have that at home on the single LONDON 882136-7 made in Germany in full stereo.
No, this mix is unreleased, as with everything else on this reel. The stereo mix from the Hot Rocks 1 CD is a different mix.
@@lukpac You are wrong. The recording actually came out. Additionally, the analog sound of vinyl allows the voices of Mick Jagger and Keith Richard to be heard more separately. Even Ian Stewart's piano sounds better harmonically. This also applies (without the piano) to the full stereo version of the song Get Of Off My Cloud on the Russian label Melodia (Lady Jane Album, C60 27411 OO6). Satisfaction released on the Hot Rock album was created from a monophonic version. The album As Time Goes By - Brilliant Outtakes From The Early Years in full stereo from various American studios (DECCA, LK 3655) is interesting. Anyway, thank you for this recording. On the record, the first guitar note is weakened.
@@vladimirdedek138 No, the officially released stereo mixes are similar, but are in fact different. Nothing from this reel has been officially released. While Heart of Stone, Satisfaction, Get Off Of My Cloud, and Paint It Black have all been released in stereo, the mixes on this reel differ. In the case of Satisfaction, the released stereo mix fades earlier, has the piano/acoustic guitar track higher in the mix, and doesn’t have as good fidelity.
@@lukpac You are right. The stereo mix fades out much earlier on the single and the acoustic guitar and piano are more prominent. However, I love this single for its sonic fullness and the acoustic background characteristic of an analogue transfer.
@@vladimirdedek138I’m nearly certain the stereo singles were sourced from the digital master for the Hot Rocks 1 CD, not analog tape. You mentioned the first note; does it fade up? That was done for the 1988 reissue of Hot Rocks 1. I don’t think Decca ever had a stereo tape; ABKCO provided tapes for MFSL, who made that transfer.
First heard this mix in 1988 on WXTR -104, the first oldies station in the Washington D. C. area.
You heard the "Hot Rocks 1" mix. Not this mix.
