I am being very hesitant in writing this proposal for my PhD of choice, because I am not sure if there is any idea that has never been researched. How do I know they won't refuse my application if I propose X idea? I want to enter more than anything and this makes me not write anything because of the fear of failure and that my idea might not even be original. I am also in the UK.
So, I got my bachelor degree in the UK 2 years ago, and I am currently doing my master's project in one of University in Indonesia now. So, I got stuck at How I should start as I began to forget how to write it properly. Then I FOUND YOUR VIDEO! Thank you for this USEFUL VIDEO!!!! Your explanations are really helpful! 1. Immerse yourself in the literature.
2. Say lots of clever things.
It's more about saying your research fills a gap rather than you're the one to do it. The competence you show through your ability to summarise and argue your point; it's indirect.
These are great tips! thank you so much, been a bit stuck about getting started!

I've always been curious how you can know for sure what the gap in knowledge is. You can't possibly read every single article from that year, much less from previous years, so how do you know you haven't missed something?
A great question! I think, if you approach it from the angle of "looking for a gap" initially, it can seem overwhelming. It is likely, however, that you may have an idea of what interests you and what sub-field it is you'd like to research within. In this case, you can begin to have a read around that subfield and the gaps will gradually become apparent. Sometimes a "gap" can be as simple as a topic not having been written about for a number of years; updating that research is certainly attending to a gap. Sometimes, your perspective on a topic that has already been researched and written about may be unique and you may be filling a gap in that respect. Not every piece of research has to be a major breakthrough and, as my MA supervisor was a fan of reminding me, sometimes the most profound answers come from the smallest questions!
I've seen in several other references that Conclusion is an important part of a research proposal. But U say that's not important! Are U sure?
Hey Manu, when I say conclusions aren't important in this video, I really mean that you don't have to know what the end result of your research is going to be before you start it (else what would be the point of doing it). It is definitely useful to have a conclusion section in your proposal document itself as this will help you tie all the ideas within it together and round it off nicely!
Tom Nicholas Thank U ☺ Tomorrow is my entrance exam for my Master's in Philosophy course. this would help me a lot 😇
