I think I finally understand the appeal of this genre, for someone who knows WWII history it seems to be the same appeal of Assassin's Creed II for us Italians, between the wonders of being inside familiar history and the game within the game of finding the liberties the story takes to adapt history to a commercial video game.
Assassin's Creed is a great example and you're right, it's that history behind these games that's so carefully researched and implemented in game that makes them so appealing to me personally anyway.

What’s also cool is that the missions in BIA are based on actual engagements but they changed the name of the soldiers. There’s a debrief journal you can read which contains interviews in it. Kind of like what you were saying with slam, if you read the journal, you will see the EXACT same engagements in BIA, but with factionalized characters. Same objectives, same German units, and even same deaths. So when a character dies in BIA as part of the story, a soldier actually died at that engagement. I found that out and was blown away
Earned In Blood is the most challenging/difficult of the three games. It's more 'sophisticated' than the first game, Road to Hill 30. Ammo... You cannot get ammo from teammates in Hill 30 unless they die and you pick their weapon. In EIBlood you can get ammo from teammates if you have a friendly weapon. 'Blood also contains a more challenging Skirmish Mode which is like another game within the game. So many variables and modes within the Mode. You can choose to play as Jerry in Skirmish mode. Cheats are not available in Skirmish and dropped weapons 'disappear' quickly so you'll want to pick them quick. Hell's Highway is easier but still a great game. Thanks, T.
I had a feeling I should have sussed out the Skirmish mode but for some reason I thought it was just another multi-player mode! I'm excited to replay Hell's Highway though and I hope you enjoyed the video 🙏
I replayed this one shortly after the first and...wow, you can really tell they improved the enemy AI and the level design a lot. I had a blast with how damm threatening the enemy paratroopers were on the last levels and how open the scenarios were leaving me enough field to manneuver without making the enemy less of a danger. I kinda like how they added a lot of new types of threats beside the tanks. Like the halftracks with mg 42´s and the 88´s.
I always really enjoyed the handicapped shooting mechanics, and I was sad that Hell's Highway toned them down. Think about how many WW2 games at the time just had you mowing down enemies with laser accurate weapons. Brothers in Arms is more of an RTS than a shooter.
I definitely see where you're coming from, I've just grown up with all those laser accurate shooters so going back to this series was a bit of a shock

I just recently played the Wii port of the Brothers in Arms games called Brothers in Arms: Double Time and had a great time. I played them back to back literally starting EIB 30 min after RTH30 and I agree that theyre more like 2 halves of one game and probably best enjoyed back to back. All in all Brothers in Arms is a great series that deserved better than the abrupt water down of the franchise to mobile games. Hopefully it returns better than ever
I first played this game on the wii. It was a real challenge, but I'm into those types of games.
I started to replay the game again (after the steam summer sale) afew months back. And as a history buff, the game isnt always accurate, but I forgive that because of the story and the amount of fun I had. I found myself gushing about all the small details and design choices there is in the game.
There is always stuff I wish they could've done better ofcourse. But my biggest complaint is that i wanted more.

Unfortunately it was sort of a combination of things that made me lose interest in covering this series (even if it does bother me that I just need to cover one game and it's done) But for me, as much as I enjoyed revisiting these games, my subscribers weren't that interested and in terms of making the actual videos, nether was I. I found myself going through the motions and just decided to scrap Hell's Highway. I may return one day though, again it does annoy that OCD!

I love old school FPS war games. This seems like a game I would have loved but no idea how I missed it.
It is such a jam packed genre that it doesn't surprise me that you could miss some games. But, if you love some older fps' Brothers in Arms is a good time!
