- Lesson link: banjobenclark.com/lessons/man... - This is a very bluesy, Monroe-style break in the key of G that is going to get folks' toes a tappin'. If you own a mandolin, this is one that you have to know how to play, because someone is gonna request it! Be sure to watch the 20+ minute video tutorial and download the rhythm mp3's!
Whoo-eee, Boy, that was some mighty fine a-pickin and a-sangin. .....

A guitar guy that just bought a mandolin at your store! Can’t wait to get it, so I can start learning!
Nice, thanks so much for your support of the General Store!
Thank you very much
I was wondering what they did on the original recording, it looks like they recorded it in a lower key?
I lost a pinky in 2014 and its gods grace i can still play check out my youtube channel its not bluegrass. Its the one style im struggling with... God bless u banjo ben I love your videoes
Thanks for the Mandolin Lov'in
OMG it is so fast! My fingers are bleeding! But thank you! :-)
Cool video. Also do the banjo.
Another song that you should on the banjo is if it hadnt been for love by the steeldrivers
Do you rest your right hand on the bridge at all? I see that you plant your pinky when you're picking single note passages, any right hand advice in general?
Right pinky BTW!! Awsome cant believe you replied
mighty fine, mighty fine
Where did you get that Aggie banjo player sign? It's golden!
Good intro 👍
I'm intrigued because the recorded version (in 'Oh Brother') is in F (the band version, with the mandolin part); does that player tune down?
I would say “yes”as Gerry is playing in G and tuned down to F.The fiddle on The Byrd’s “Pretty Boy Floyd” is also turned down to F.
He sounds like Kenneth from 30 Rock.
Nice part
Cool
Gig 'em!!!
thanks for your help/ MLL-Tx. A&M-71
Ben Im a guitar mandolin and bass teacher here in Southwest Va I live about 30 mins from ralph stanley Iv just started teaching again and things are tough here in Coal country... Any thoughts on how to get students...
Man, that's tough, Phillip! I don't know brother, except to reach out on social media via ads.
No hard times awaiting - Marty Stuart? Or good man like me - dierks Bentley on mandolin?
Can you send the link to your 20 minute video lesson of Man of Constant Sorrow on mandolin? Can't find
Here you go! I'd be honored to have you on board the site. Gold Pick members can view all the vids and download tabs/mp3's: www.banjobenclark.com/videos/230/mando-man-of-constant-sorrow/
I'm used to using heavy picks tortex 1.35 on guitar do you have pick preferancees for mandolin
+Doug Golden Golden From heavy to lighter, the pick will produce more volume. After decades of using the purple 1.14mm and other thick picks on guitar and mandolin I started using the blue 1.00mm a bit. A good friend and renowned guitar teacher told me to go even lighter if I want more volume. You do sacrifice the "woodier"/bass when going lighter. Regardless, I have found that the green 0.88mm is great for me.
If you use good strings that last a long time then some of the treble from the green pick will fade away. For me I usually have new strings on my guitar or mandolin for each new performance (more than a week apart) unless I am sweating a lot. When performing I prefer the sound I get from one or two day old strings. I've been playing the same Gibson F5 since 1973 and the guitar is a 1934 Martin D-28. That's me but it definitely isn't for anyone else.
I've done the thickness thing with real tortoise too.
+Doug Golden Golden I agree with ecman. I use the same pick for both guitar/mando and it's around a 1.1. I like a little thinner pick with hardly any flex in it.
+Banjo Ben Clark Thanks :) I use GHS med phosphor bronze on the mandolin and Darco med bronze on the Martin. Steve Kaufman told me about the pick choice over a decade ago.
I cut a corner off a credit card 20 years ago because I didn't have a pick...now I'm so used to that I can't even use a pick.
What type of mandolin is this?
This is a Gibson F-5g. I love it!
I could be reading this wrong but I think this man is an aggie, hahaha! Gig'Em!
+Roxanne Lane The only way you could be reading it wrong is if perhaps you're an Aggies as well :) Gig 'em!
Anders from workaholics...anyone?
Ryan Dee absolutely

Great teacher, It's just a shame he dosen't follow the suit of other fantastic tutors on you tube by offering 100% free tutorials.
I would have subbed and made a donation straight away if that was the case.
Not everything is free. Banjo Ben has hundreds of videos on his site and you can subscribe to get more. This is pretty detailed and free on UA-cam. Remember, the guy has to eat and feed his family too.
I couldnt tell........... go take a look at "goliath guitar tutorials" 100% free, and Gareth the owner does very very well for himself through donations, because it's free...... It's the future my friend, and the future is free. many others are following suit. People like banjo ben will not be able to sell anything soon becuase so many offer it free...... would you pay money for something when you can get an amazing service for nothing?? ... NO of course not. I donate to goliath every month..... and like i said i would have done the same here but the business model is outdated.
stephen stuart I appreciate your thoughts, but I personally am glad to pay for quality material and I believe there are plenty of others who feel the same. Also, I checked out Goliath and he offers a monthly auto-donation on his website for members who would like to receive everything he offers. I don't know about you, but that kind of sounds like the memberships on my site to me :)
For me, there are not that many mandolin teaching videos that have as much as Banjo Ben has. I did the lifetime membership so I don't have to donate each month. Having guitar, banjo and mandolin items there is pretty awesome. Of course, it's your option on whether you like the videos or not. If there is value, the market will dictate as to whether it's a sustainable model.
to be fair your right about the lake of madolin tutorials, but i hope that in time people like banjo ben will see the "free model" system and convert, becuase people will flock to him as the "go to guy" simply because it's free, and in turn he would get lots of people donating.
trust me if you play the guitar also, try out goliath for a while ..free.
it's fancastic.
he will also offer links to several other 100% free tutors who offer great services.
You're an Aggie fan, but, at least you're a Fly Fisherman, so, there's that.
"Trashy"? Incredible...
The inability to understand what you actually played seems unintentional. Having said that, the comment containing "trashy" just shows the ignorance of this "humble" instructor.
All I ask is that you pray 4 me ben. And I believe you know the lord.

This turned my brain to mush :(
That's better than Sam Busch
There are a lot of references to Bill Monroe here. He did not record what is being taught, Mike Compton did. And there was no "trashy" playing in it. Compton's ability to play complex rhythmic patterns on the mandolin is unmatched and rarely understood; the latter is on clear display here.
ALRIGHT IM LEARNING THIS LICK FOR MY DAD
...why not key of F,...like the record ?...if you want to sound like SB boys !
***** I was wanting an answer from 'banjo Ben', -he should know its in 'F'
wildwood valleyboy I realize the movie version is in F, but when I polled my members on my facebook page, folks wanted it in G, so I wrote/taught it in G.
Newsflash wildwood valleyboy: It's in the key the singer wants to sing it in, where ever that falls!
I hear two mandolins...
Damn man most guitar lessons just teach the whole thing. All the mandolin stuff cuts off.

A funny thing George can't sing and the voice is a substitution
