I'm so happy that you're watching this & LotR.
Marvel is all over the place & I love some of the movies (Guardians of The Galaxy is like more modern Star Wars), but the first Star Wars trilogy is the GOAT!
I read Lord of the Rings during high school before the movies came out (I'm old...) and they nailed the books.
That is like the perfect trilogy. LotR & Jojos are like the best adaptations... like ever.

@OilRigWorker26 I dared say like 2 months ago I Iike DC more than Marvel, I think I got banned.😆 Marvel has lots of good characters and cool special effects and cool tear jerking scenes, but DC actually makes sense storywise. I would have liked to have seen that version; Cushing was one of the only actors on the set of the first movie that saw what Lucas was going for and didn't think it was just schlock. As good as Guiness did due to his professionalism, it would have been nice to see a true believer get the role.

The Jabba scene is so funny to me. They filmed it originally with a dude who looked like Hagrid dressed like Shrek and they hadn't nailed down the idea of his character. It was a deleted scene for a reason. He shows up in later media so they could have left that scene on the cutting room floor, but they put it back in for the special edition released and they CGI'd a slug body over Shrek and adobe photoshop transform tool'd Han over his tail when he walked behind him. This is why we get the wonderfully ironic line "Jabba, you're a wonderful human being."
Plus Lucas wanted the music in the Cantina to be space jazz. So he named it like jazz, but spacey.
    It's called Jizz

Originally, Star Wars was supposed to be a stand-alone movie. George had yet to fully develop the story outside of the beginning to Luke's journey into the Force, and would've stopped here if the movie didn't make money. He even bet against it with his best friend Steven Spielberg who told him that he thought the movie would do well. When the reviews started coming out, he went to work on the script to V and VI without knowing what they would be - and made revisions *during* filming.
More on that in the next Star Wars Sunday...

    • @kevthepoet
      @kevthepoet Місяць тому +15

He already had plans, and hopes but the plans weren't fully formed. It wasn't *supposed* to be a standalone movie, he just expected it to be but he started at Episode 4 for a reason. He may not have expected success but he clearly hoped to expand on this story.

@@Blacktoothoneil it was called Star Wars but the opening crawl always said Episode IV: A New Hope. I know because I had it on VHS in the 80s.
And the lore always had clone wars in the past and redemption in the future. These are facts, not speculation.
Sequels were just rare so he may have continued the story in books and comics. A sequel comic was made and retconned when a sequel movie was created. These are all verifiable facts. The comic exists. The stories set in the future existed but Lucas didn't plan to make Vader and Anakin the same person til later.

Couple of fun facts unless you already knew them:
    1. Mark Hammil, who plays Luke, after this role will later on become a great voice actor and his roles are great and most of them iconic. Like The Fire Lord from Avatar and Joker in Batman Animated Series and Batman Arkham games (with exception of few games where he's not in them). But yeah, Episode 4 is where Mark began his way.
    2. Vader is voiced by James Earl Jones, who will voice Mufasa in Lion King.
    3. Idk if you recognised the actor who plays Han Solo because it isnt shown on YT version, but it's Harrison Ford. His other big role later would be in Indiana Jones as Indiana Jones himself. And Harrison is a well known "hater" of Star Wars. In all various interviews he shows his disgust towards the movies. But he says that in a sarcastic/humorous ways you can't be sure if he'sthe outright hater of the franchise or just likes to play with the public in such a way ever since movies were released (because in some of the interviews he still plays into humorous bits)

    2. The Lightsaber combat definetly gets progressively better as time goes on. This is partially due to technical limitations as the Lightsabers in A New Hope had their iconic effects rotoscoped in (before being digitally remastered) , were infamously fragile, so the actors couldn't even use them without worrying about breaking them, and even had a hidden cord that connected to a battery that I think you can still catch in certain scenes if you go frame by frame in some older versions of the movie
But as soon as we get into The Empire Strikes back this doesn't appear to be an issue going forward.

Fascinating bit of trivia, Star Wars is in fact a throwback to old sci-fi adventure serials, like Flash Gordon.
The 70's were generally a pretty grim time for movies culturally, so George Lucas wanted to create something more optimistic that people could enjoy, so drawing upon his love of race cars, as well as Akria Kurosawa, the Dam Busters, westerns and Arthurian legend, he made Star Wars to be a modern fantasy, with "In A Galaxy Far Far Away..." being It's equivalent of "Once Upon A Time."
It's pretty interesting to learn about the context of when it came out.
Han for instance is a stand in for the then contemporary cynical anti-heroes, to contrast with the more idealistic Knight and Squire archetype that Obi-Wan and Luke represented, and it goes without saying that Leia is a feminist icon, taking no crap, and having an active in her rescue, which was groundbreaking at the time. On top of that, there's some social commentary as well with the Empire being an allegory for the US at the time - an oppressive military power that throws its weight around, that's defeated by a smaller more cunning opponent.
All of this leading to one of the biggest hits of the era, with books, comics, and games and toys, all expanding on the galaxy, though little of it was actully considered canon by Lucas, since a number of creator's tended to take liberties with the universe tone and lore.
Decades of the these materials lead to a bad case of too many cooks in the kitchen, which funny enough had to scramble every time Lucas added to the lore, since his "documentary" style of filmmaking left a lot of things un-confirmed until then. He's very good at show don't tell, but not so much with dialogue, which Harrson Ford saying to him, "You can write this, George, but you sure as hell can't say it."
Still despite a few ups and downs, like a few unnecessary changes in the special editions, it's endured to this day, and I hope you continue to watch and enjoy it yourself.

Jabba was originally going to be a very rotund human, and those scenes were filmed with Declan Mulholland (also in Time Bandits) as Jabba but ultimately cut from the film, with Janna’s first official appearance being in Episode VI. For the Special Edition release, Lucasfilm edited CGI Jabba over Mulholland’s scenes and had Scott Schumann dub over Mulholland’s lines in Huttese, then added the edited footage back in where it had originally been cut from.

Lukes and one other character in Star Wars are taking the, "Hero's Journey." The Hero's Journey is based from books of Joseph Campbell, an American Writer and Professor. Campbell borrowed the word monomyth from James Joyce's Finnegans Wake (1939). Campbell was a notable scholar of Joyce's work and in A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake (1944) co-authored the seminal analysis of Joyce's final novel. Campbell's singular the monomyth implies that the "hero's journey" is the ultimate narrative archetype, but the term monomyth has occasionally been used more generally, as a term for a mythological archetype or a supposed mytheme that re-occurs throughout the world's cultures. You will be surprised which other character is also on the Hero's Journey, not just Luke.

Ironically, if those Stormtroopers hadn't killed Owen and Beru, Luke would have applied to join the Imperial Navy, and likely ended up as a TIE pilot, with a high chance of getting Vader's and Palpatine's attention. Han _was_ a TIE pilot, but when he saw how badly Imperial officers were treating Chewie, he rescued the Wookie and ran, which is why Chewbacca owes Han a life debt, which also happens to extend to his family, at least in the old EU. A lot of the other early Rebel pilots were deserters from the Imperial Navy, and sometimes they brought stuff over when they left.
One cool story involves Baron Soontir Fel. The man was an ace TIE Bomber pilot, and to give you an idea of how difficult that is, TIE-series are unshielded and don't have an on-board hyperdrive. TIE Bombers are particularly slow, and since they have the additional pod for bombs / missiles / torpedoes, they're also larger targets, making it much more of a challenge to survive in them. Fel's sister fell in love with Wedge Antilles, a Rebel pilot. To make sure his sister was happy, Fel decided to leave the Imperial Navy, and join the Rebel Alliance, teaming up with Wedge.
Another cool character was Winter, Leia's childhood friend and confidante. Winter was beautiful and graceful, to the point people often thought she was Princess Leia. She also had a perfect memory, making her a perfect intelligence agent for the Alliance. She preferred to act as nanny to the Solo kids, though, because her friendship with Leia meant the world to her. Winter married Tycho Celchu, another pilot, but she was always a woman of action.
Most of this is EU stuff, so it can't be a spoiler.

Didn't like the direction 2nd and 3rd because they were politicized and in a way that made no sense, but being a history buff knowing the references they tried to make, but honestly failed hard at it.. it rubs me the wrong way which made them hard to enjoy. I can not say more without spoiling it for anyone who hasn't seen those two films though. @@patrickwaldeck6681 I wouldn't say I despise them. I don't even hate Jar Jar. I would say if I was maybe 10 years younger when they came out, I may have loved them.
My perspective changed between when Phantom Menace came out and Attack of the Clones, so it had a big impact on my opinions of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
I blame the fact I saw Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team, Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket, and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory after Phantom Menace came out. Let say they blew even the original Star Wars trilogy out of the water. So it left me disappointed when I saw later Star Wars productions. but I guess I can argue Nostalgia holds up the other ones for me. Basically the summer/fall of 2001 and winter/spring of 2002 set my bar higher than Star Wars could achieve. As those shows played on TV and I got hooked. They set my bar very high.
It also doesn't help that when I was into StarWars before the prequels I was a X-Wing vs Tie Fighter kid. Not a Luke vs Vader kid. I didn't have Lightsabers I had X-Wings, Stormtroopers, Rebel Trooper Toys, etc. Prequel films almost exclusively focus around politicians and Jedi, which kind of bored me. Phantom Menace doesn't, you have Naboo Security and pilots with a few named characters, the Gungons(Spelling) who had had numerous named characters including Jar Jar risking their lives in the end making the film far more powerful in my opinion, war isn't war without real risk, and you don't get that with Clones vs Droids. There is no Death Star Trench run with all these named pilots losing their lives trying to save many. Including one that was a friend of Luke.
I want human struggle, not Space Wizards, Clones and Droids. I want Imperial Officers like Piett and pilots like Wedge being characters in the films. You don't get that with Droids and Clones, or Religious Zealots like Sith/Jedi that make no logical sense.

And ALSO, kinda sidenote, there was this Star Wars manga revolving around a group of people around the time of a new hope/after. And there was this character who was part of the empire, and he was from Alderaan, and he talked about it in the manga. BRO they had this man on the deathstar in formation with the a bunch of Imperial goons, watching a screen as they showed them blowing up Alderaan. AND HE JUST WATCHED as his home planet gets blown up and the face he made. the artist was crazy with it. Just the look of horror and disbelief that the Empire would blow up his homeworld was insane.

And if you're impressed by the FX, keep in mind that this was still the era where every film had to hire individual experts to create a one off FX studio. When they made The Empire Strikes Back, they actually created Industrial Light and Magic because maintaining a permanent company to do FX for films cut down on start up and break down costs as well as keeping experienced teams together.

Don't let any fandom negativity stop you from enjoying this amazing universe! Only you get to decide what you like and dislike about Star Wars.
3:16 There is a very good documentary about the behind the scenes for the first three films, highly recommend watching it. From special effects to breaking film tradition, George Lucas and Star Wars changed the film industry forever. While some of these scenes received a visual and special effects update in 1997, this remains a landmark film for the time.
12:25 John Williams brought us so much amazing music all throughout the franchise.
38:13 I feel this scene doesn't get enough attention. The strength of Leia's character here is astounding. She's been tortured by the interrogator droid (drugs, shocks, who knows what else) AND mind probed by Darth Vader, one of the most powerful Force users. THEN had to watch as her home planet was turned to asteroids, rubble, and debris. She's gone through so much in such a short time. Yet here, she sees another human being she has just met mourn the loss of his mentor, who just happens to be Ben Kenobi (whom she was relying on to deliver the droids and plans). All of this and instead of focusing on her own sorrow she tries to comfort Luke. Such an amazing female lead.
43:35 The ships do have scanners and instruments to help the pilots. But technology can fail or be fooled; real world pilots are also trained not to be over reliant on equipment. Partially related, starfighters are equipped with inertial compensators to reduce or eliminate the effects of high speed maneuvers in space. Most pilots don't turn it all the way up so they can still "feel" how the fighter is moving and responding. Porkins (larger pilot who says he doesn't need to pull up, he can make it) was later stated to have his compensator at max at all times, which partially led to his death in the final battle here. Good pilots use all their senses!
Love hearing you praise the writing, pacing, and overall script of the film!

So, I think George had some ideas for more of the story... but no one believed in this movie even the cast. It was George's faith in what he had and KNEW it would hit with audiences that got this made. For the first movie he made a publishing deal with Fox I think where they could publish this movie but he retained the rights to the IP and the merchandising rights (which prior to this wasn't really a thing) and then George made toy figures out of EVERY character in the movie and gave them backstories and shit on the back of the boxes to make the world feel bigger in 1977. He then used that money to fully fund the next movie so he was the sole owner and I think was just legally obligated to use Fox to distribute them.

8:32 - Okay, so you're watching one of the later editions. That's a Dewback. They're desert reptiles used for mounts in some systems. Not native to Tatooine, if i recall. Budget issues meant that in the original all we saw of them was some blurry distance shots, but in the Special Edition and later, they were replaced with CGI models. It's one of the SE changes that actually DOES bring things closer to the original vision.
    12:25 - It's John Williams. It's ALWAYS Epic.
12:37 - Those are Banthas. Tusken Raiders (Sand People) use them as transports.
13:17 - Yeah, that sound is a change from one of the later editions. The original sound was MUCH better.
15:44 - It's canon: the red one actually blew it's own motivator to keep R2 and 3PO together.
20:35 - Dude: They wouldn't kill his family!! **CUT TO...** Crispy skeletons.
25:18 - Allow me to introduce you to the greatest controversy of the Special Editions...HAN SHOT FIRST!!!! In the original cut, you get an explosion and suddenly Greedo is a crispy critter falling on Han's table. Han had shot him THROUGH the table when he wasn't looking. It illustrated that Han was a jaded man who had seen too much to care about playing fair any more. When the Special Editions came around, George Lucas decided that he didn't like the idea that Han would take unfair advantage of Greedo. It's not 'heroic.' So Lucas edited the shot to make it look like Greedo missed and Han shot him afterwards. Not only was it a choppy-ass edit that made Greedo look like an idiot, but it took away some of the edge that made early Han such a fascinating character.
25:21 - ...aaaaand it's the Maclunky version. It's one of the latest edits to the movie. NOBODY knows why they did it. It's just asinine.
25:47 - This scene was left out of the original cut for budget reasons. It was filmed with a stand-in actor before the character of Jabba the Hutt was (pardon the expression) fully fleshed-out. The original concept had some kind of furry bipedal alien similar to Chewie, but it eventually developed into the slug creature you see here. Unfortunately, the budget ran low before they could finalize the creature, so the scene was left on the cutting room floor. The Special Edition used CGI to edit in the Jabba that was eventually designed for Return of the Jedi, but there was one moment where Han walks behind Jabba. The effects crew didn't know how to 'fix' the shot, so in the end they decided to have Han _step on_ Jabba's tail. This scene would also have been our first look at Boba Fett, but due to it's removal from the movie, he wasn't introduced until the much lamented Star Wars Holiday Special.
39:10 - Han HAS been through some sh@#, in BOTH continuities. He's spent 20 years getting the idealism beaten out if him and he came into this movie jaded as f@#$.
40:34 - You'll pick this stuff up as you go along, but the thing to remember is that the Force touches everybody and everything. Most people don't even notice it at all. Sometimes someone will seem especially 'lucky' or will have unusually strong intuition, and these people are sometimes referred to as 'Force sensitive,' but only the truly gifted can actually _manipulate_ the Force, and it's those people who can become Jedi.
42:17 - This scene is _slightly_ extended from the original cut, though it's still not the entire original scene. It doesn't add a whole lot more. One cut scene that IS worth noting is that earlier in the movie we actually got to meet Luke's friends, including Biggs. In that scene Biggs tells Luke that the modern Imperial Academy is just a propaganda machine for the military and that he's leaving to join the Rebellion, which would have made this scene an even bigger reunion.
43:36 - Actually, in the lore there ARE pilots who rely almost exclusively on sensors...but the have a tendency to not last too long. The GOOD pilots use a balance of visual and technical feedback to stay aware of the situation.
45:15 - R2 and Alicia sounding EXACTLY the same.
45:51 - Han was _actually_ going to leave them all in the lurch, but Chewbacca went full Jewish Mom on Han and guilted him into coming back.
47:44 - Although sources disagree as to whether George Lucas originally intended 6 or 9 movies, the fact remains that NO movie studio was willing to commit to bringing his entire vision to life. Eventually, 20th Century Fox agreed to greenlight ONE movie and see how things went from there. Lucas looked over his 6 (9) movies and decided that #4 had the most self-contained story, so he pitched that one, and it was a BLOCKBUSTER. It's success was strong enough for FOX to greenlight the next two movies. When Star Wars we rereleased in theaters prior to the release of The Empire Strikes Back, the words 'Episode 4: A New Hope' were added to the opening crawl. It wouldn't be until the late 90s, after the original trilogy's 20th anniversary, that the 'Prequel Trilogy' would finally be produced. (Needless to say, a lot changed between the original drafts and the final product.)

Thank you for covering a franchise near and dear to my heart, which shaped my childhood (I'm just a few years older than you). It's definitely hard to top Empire Strikes Back; there's a reason it's overwhelmingly considered the fan favorite among the entire series. But I definitely also really enjoy Revenge of the Sith, and I think it gets a bit too clowned on, despite the admittedly cringy dialogue at times. In addition, Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palestine will always be a beloved highlight of the movies (and some shows) with how much he loves getting into character. He's just such a character you love to hate, but hate to love.
Definitely keep an eye out for the "Fandom Menace" entering your UA-cam and Twitch chats as you go forward watching the series, especially as you get to some of the more recent shows and movies. They're toxic fans that are infamous for seeking out any content creators that cover Star Wars, and either try to get them to adopt their cynical, hateful vision of the franchise, or, if it actually looks like the creators are enjoying what the "fandom" doesn't want them to, they tend to bully and harass.

26:31 This is a fun little bit of side cannon: That hooded figure is Gerrun Daan, a Kubaz from the planet Kubindi. Kubaz have very good senses of smell and a natural curiosity, so the Empire took many of them from their home and forced them to be spies. The Kubaz were treated more like dogs than respected members of Imperial military, and almost all hated working for the Empire.
Gerrun Daan by this point, had managed to use his spycraft skills to escape the Empire's yoke, and was trying to build up funds to start his own rebellion. He had heard that the Empire were looking for a young human and two droids, but had no idea of their significance, so when he saw Luke, he turned them in, hoping the reward would help him free his homeworld.

4:50 About this scene. So MANY writers don't understand why this one works (Since they tried to copy it from TFA).
The plans were on a ship. A very small space that is alredy under Imperium control, and inside of a bigger ship. They can by all means tear the ship apart to find it. So Vader did not waste time on interogating the capitan because he don't have to.
And when the droids leave with the escape pod they scann it for life signals so it's not like they did not tought of it. It was a human error but even than the person who let it go reported it very quickly, and so Vader did not choked him out since he did he's job as he should have.
    .
There are so many factors why this one works and establishes Vader well. Sadly many writers don't seme to pay enough atention which is why we have the "bad guy kills good guy/minion for no reason" trope.
