Major influence for me. Absolutely stunned the first time I heard him on Ralph Towner's 'Solstice' around 1975. This approach to drumming, like DeJohnette and younger players like Laurence Pike from Australia who has continued and expanded it, has always been what I've gravitated to most.
I've heard a lot of people to whom I showed this clip saying to me that he wasn't "groovy" or "swingy" enough. His playing like DeJohnette's playing cleary have detractors, but on my side I would love to play like them and like this, and they inspires me a lot !
I read Jon took a lesson once from Dejohnette and the two were also friends. Two of Dejohnette’s influences were Elvin and Toney. The greats are all intertwined somehow

Once in a lifetime gig, fantastic flow, he's very progressive and unique.
Jon also played with Bud Powell,, Dexter Gordon,Sonny Stitt,Don Byas & Jan Garbarek.........most impressive!!
Influenced by Elvin Jones?
Perhaps Jack DeJohnette..
@@evertvanderhik5774 Jack DeJohnnette and Jon are both in the same years.
@Ilham-mw7lc sure, yeah then a common influencer, I find them a bit similar, DeJohnette is more explosive and he is more subtle.
