The hats were thrown onto the ice because Matthews got 3 goals, which is called a hat trick. Fans throw hats onto the ice in hockey when that happens.

@LivinginCanada It might vary on the team, but generally, the player that scores the hat trick chooses if he wants to keep any or not most likely as a souvenir. After that, they are cleaned and donated.

They used to let you collect your hat after the game if you wanted it back. Not sure if they still do.

I've been a leafs fan since I was 10 years old, and it's great too see new fans Joining the sport! For your first game, it's great that you did a lot of research beforehand to get some knowledge about the sport. My first game was the same as yours, learning the rules and atmosphere, and having trouble to see the puck and looking at the scoreboard constantly. It is so much different watching on TV vs in person. I hope to see you guys become diehard fans once you learn more about the sport. Just have a lot of patience, as we haven't won in quite a long time. Before I was born. You guys have made a lot of progress in Toronto, Great video overall!

I'm glad you enjoyed watching your first live hockey game. I hope the hockey bug bit you, and you want to see another game. I'd suggest making a trip to Kitchener or London to take in a Major Junior game. Both the Rangers and Knights arenas are like mini NHL rinks, and the atmosphere is electric. It will cost you 1/10th the money of an NHL game and the hockey is top notch. Spend the weekend and enjoy the local restaurants and sights, too. 👍

Glad you enjoyed your first NHL/hockey game. It's an amazing sport. The history of the nets on either end of the ice is a tragic and sad story, but worth knowing the history if you decide to continue watching hockey.

The green and white jersey you see at the 3:00 mark is the Toronto St. Patrick's Jersey aka the Toronto St. Pats. That was the name of the team before it was changed to the Toronto Maple leafs.
So some players in the NHL have designated roles in the game, which is to protect and or hype up the crowd or if the other team is intentionally trying to injure their players or whatever the reason, they will drop the glove and fight. Both players afterwards will sit for 5 minutes for fighting. After 5 and stoppage of play, they will return to their respective teams

@@LivinginCanada Fighting in hockey is a form of self-policing to protect players from dirty hits and slashes. The referees don't break up the fight right away unless the players fall to the ice. They let the players blow off some steam before they break up the fight so it doesn't carry over after they get out of the penalty box.
There are unwritten rules for fighting in the NHL.
1) Big guys don't fight small guys. They pick on somebody their own size
2) Usually both players agree to fight before it happens, sometimes verbally wishing each other "Good luck!".
3) You don't keep hitting another player after they have fallen to the ice.
4) Players rarely get seriously injured during a fight. But they often cut their knuckles while punching each other's helmets.
5) Players will sometimes congratulate each other after a good fight. "Good job, big boy!"
6) Fights are often a teams' tough guy "enforcer" handing out punishment to an opponent who put a huge body check or dirty play on a STAR teammate....such as #34 Austin Matthews.

Great video. I've been a Leafs fan for 70 years. Aside from the entertainment value, another reason for allowing fights is that it defuses a situation. Fighting takes a lot effort and is exhausting. Its similar to fighting for a puck along the boards which also takes a lot of players.

@@LivinginCanada Canadian children begin formal hockey training at 20-24 (4-5 months) weeks of age. We learn to ice skate (with a hockey stick for balance) before walking on our own two feet. 😬🤥

Most players who fight are enforcers who protect the star hockey players. The Game of Hockey use to be much more brutal before players associations and health protocols came into effect. We've seen a lot of very talented players end their careers early because of dirty hits. These "goons" as we use to call them, ensure nobody takes advantage of somebody in a vulnerable spot.
Nice... really great teamwork! It was surprising to me that the fights happened so early on though!
In hockey if two players are both willing combatants they’re allowed to fight until one or both players fall onto the ice(either by loss of balance or be being knocked unconscious by their opponent), both players agree that they’ve fought enough, or the referee decides the fight has gone long enough or is particularly dangerous for one of the combatants. After the fight both players are given 5 minute major penalties for fighting. The penalties are served at the same time and don’t give either team a man advantage for the duration. However, if one player was clearly the instigator of the fight, that player will be assed a minor 2 minute penalty for instigating on top of his 5 minute fighting penalty. The 2 minute instigator penalty will give the other team a man advantage power play for the duration. Hope this explains your question :) love to see new hockey fans :D

Leaf tickets are pretty expensive if you want to sit fairly close not to mention food and drinks. Last time I went to a game, boss gave me tickets which was really nice since he had box seats. Definitely nice to watch the game live but I can’t afford to attend games, I’m ok watching the game at home.

I am sorry that the first thing you saw in Canadian hockey was a fight. It is a fast game that requires great skill. The fans do like the fights so they tolerate them.
to understand fighting just watch any YT video about "the code" it will make alot more sense and probably understand its actually quite detrimental to players safety even if that means putting safety on the backburner for a moment and slugging out some fists, hands are rated E for everyone in hockey..well except the refs obviously
