- I have the full play starring Brian Dennehy on DVD, as it was shown on cable-television when I recorded it for my university acting class. I have this impossible-to-find recording available on DVD for a donation via PayPal, if you contact me.
This recording has never been released commercially, and is posted in compliance with the terms of Fair Use. Further, this clip, similar to that show on the 1999 Tony Awards, is of a scene from the Tony Award-winning revival of Arthur Miller's "Death of A Salesman."
This production was directed by Robert Falls, starred Brian Dennehy as Willy Loman, and featured Elizabeth Franz as Linda Loman, Ron Eldard as Biff Loman, and Ted Koch as Happy Loman, among many other talented actors.
Brian died today. One of the finest actors I had the privilege to work with. His Loman was extraordinary. RIP.
To me, the character of Willy Loman needs to be a powerful looking man. It symbolizes how life beats you down, and age catches up to you.
The best way to look at Willy is imagining that the younger version had PRESENCE! Big, powerful, probably a former football star a few pounds ago. He probably succeeded in sales half because he was likable, and half because of intimidation. He wouldn’t mean to be that way, but it’s the LOOK, the PRESENCE!
And when the big guy starts to age, it slowly takes chunks away…physically and spiritually.
This is why I believe Dennehy was the best
I saw this production and it was one of the best things i have ever seen. The acting and directing were transcendent.
Amazing!
Someone should post this full production for the people. Best DOS ever.
I had the privilege of seeing this production. Dennehy was nothing short of brilliant. I’d love to see the opening scene when he walks in, turns his back to the audience and drops the suitcase in exhaustion. He personified Willy Logan in that incredible moment.
I still picture that in my mind, also...amazing performance by Brian Dennehy...
I have this on VHS still, one of the greatest productions ever to get recorded on film, I wish they would re-release it now that Brian has died, it is a master class of acting. He and the other actors and actresses are all brilliant!
I had the honor to play this role and Mr Dennehys performance was an inspiration to me and watching him was always like watching a master class in acting. RIP you Amazing Thespian.
Five of us had first row seats [offered on the day of the performance], three from Ireland and two actors. I looked over at one point and everyone was in tears, very powerful performance by a brilliant cast. A memory none of us will forget
Thank you so much for your extraordinary talent to Entertainment you will be missed.
Rest In Peace Mr Dennehy
I'd like to buy this as a present for my brother who also saw the Dennehy play on Broadway. He was a salesman for over half a century - his crying thruout the play probably ruined it for others.
I thought I saw this full performance uploaded here but I can’t find it now.
Very interested in this DVD copy of Death of a Salesman. My theatre teacher showed me this version in high school. I searched for a recording for a number of years with no luck.
This is golden. Thanks for posting a snippet. Here's Elizabeth Franz's Tony Awarenesses acceptance speech. Love it that she thanks the main actors, including Dennehy, the backstage crew, her coaches, and Hal Holbrook.
I'm looking for video 2005 footage of Death of a Salesman also with Brian Dennehy, and with Douglas Henshall as Bif Loman at the West End "The Lyric" theater in London. Does anyone know if it exists anywhere online?
R.I.P ... life is the enemy, live a sentence, survive a protest !!!!!
Even a digital copy would be very useful for students who are having difficulty with this play
Will someone please from Lincoln center post this production. The most profound theater I ever saw. Please post this production. I will never forget it.
You can NOT get a DVD of this. It is impossible. There is not a market for it, fortunately I was able to see it in person. It was one of the top 1% of shows I have seen on Broadway since 1970. It was riveting and unforgettable. That last scene between Willy and Biff was stark, emotional, and brilliant. Just show the Lee J Cobb and Dustin Hoffman versions to your students.
I also recorded it when I saw it on cable, but it was on VHS, and I have shown it to my class so many times, it has worn out! I would LOVE to get a DVD version and would gladly make a donation ... could you please tell me how to contact you in order to accomplish this. Thanks!
I am reading the play with my 10th grade English class and would love to show the students this great version of the stage play. Please let me know how I can contact you and procure a copy. Thanks!
