In the Torah portion of Ki Teitzei there are 74 mitzvot, the highest number of any portion. In our class we explore two of them, each one full of paradoxes, deep questions and a certain sense of mystery. The first mitzvah is shiluach hakan, sending away the mother bird when wanting to take chicks or eggs from a nest. Though it sounds like a very straightforward type of mitzvah, it is treated as one that is highly paradoxical and laden with symbolism. The second mitzvah we explore is of the rebellious son who is executed by the court for his rebelliousness, a description of a situation that we are told in reality never happened. Then the question is: what are we supposed to learn from this. This passage in the Torah deals with the great paradox of free will versus God's omniscience and Providence.
