I actually think it's kinda realistic, both Walt and Jesse have awful street smart and knowledge is running a criminal business, so no surprise they constantly get into troubles
“I did it for me” I think deep down Walt was at peace being away from his family, even if it hurt to not be able to talk to them and hear their voices or feel their embrace. Even if he was a flawed character and had done LOTS of things wrong, he still had a bit of common sense
