Jordan averaged 37 ppg and scored 3k+ points in the 1986-87 season while making only 12 threes that season. That era was way more physical, there was actual defense, and the paint was constantly clogged. For comparison Harden averaging 36 ppg in 2018-19 while making 378 threes. He did this in an era with way better spacing and basically no defense yet he couldn't score more than Mike. Now is supposed to be "peak" basketball but none of these guys can eclipse that Jordan season even though they're chucking 3s every game.

Then a terrible series vs the Celts with low fg% and high turnovers and twice the Cavs being the number one seed and losing to the 3rd and 4th seeds in the playoffs. Then creating a superteam and choking against the Mavs as the favourite. Then another 4 lost finals. Then fastforward to the Lakers who have struggled to stay above .500.

There's no defense so they appear more skilled. Isiah said something really interesting years back in that they could ball handle just as well, but the defensive rules prevented them from doing that. The defensive rules also made the game screen usage and drive and kick heavy because players could now do that with no hand checking and the paint opening up every 3 seconds. And as a result, taking more 3s also became possible. The game became more elementary.
You definitely won't see players throwing themselves out of bounds every play either...

That was one of the beauties of 90s (and 80s) Era of basketball. The team aspect of it. It was an actual science. As a fan, watching from the seats or from the television. Few things were as beautiful as watching a perfectly devised plan come together on the court.

I agree modern NBA players APPEAR to be better athletes and ball handlers but the modern NBA rules, floor spacing, and lack of defense and physicality makes it much easier for NBA players to run, jump, and dribble. I'm a 90s kid but I loved the 80s game and gave prime magic and bird plus all the greats that were at the end of their careers all the love in the world. I dont know when that changed into hating on past players. We idolized them and were pissed we were too young to see them play. I'd love to see Kareem or Dr J play.
As a European, I expected USA to win every time they go to play out of the NBA because the best basketball league in the world is in America. The best players are in America for the majority. There are europeans who are great but some of them didn't have suxcess in the NBA.
After the redeem team and the fact that Kobe left team USA, they never won since and Lebron only got bronze medal when he was involved. American basketball is in a state where europe has a possibility to catch up in a decade or two if those people don't wake up now to change what is wrong. And this is a hot take I will defend because it's up to the commissoner and the future players to prove me wrong.
Right now the best players are from Europe and Africa. I thought Americans had pride to make themselves better than them and forcing them to earn their spot. But they didn't do so much in that aspect.
