    And now I know why that 37 is the standard by which all others are measured and now I want one. Great video Bryan, thanks for making them.

    That would be a tough call between those two. Both great guitars. I give the edge to the Authentic. A little brighter and more defined.

    I own a 2008 D28 Marquis. Love the neck on this guitar and 1.75 nut with 2 5/16 at the saddle. The Adirondack top can take a pounding yet it is great for finger picking with the wider string spacing. I've never played the '37 but both guitars sound wonderful here. I sure love mine and the neck sets the Marquis apart. I'll pass it on to my guitar playing son.

    I have a D-28 Marquis and thought I was happy till I herd this. I just like what I am hearing from that 37 authentic. I have to play one and check out that neck. Nice video Bryan
    UPDATE: I have gone out and played at least 20 Authentic's from Aged to non aged and experts and the one common sound quality I have found is that they sound muffled / wet / muted. I have posted my findings before and it seems to ruffle some folks feathers. I will say they are very light in weight, and the aged version with the rolled neck ( fret board edge) feels wonderful.

    This is a close one, in my opinion. The Marquis is brighter and would cut through the mix well in a crowded club. The Authentic is warmer and would be great for a singer/player.
    Perhaps the Marquis' neck is the game changer?

    • @Bryankimsey
      @Bryankimsey  2 роки тому +2

      If I was gonna use a pickup or stand behind a mic, I'd 100% go for the neck I liked. Otherwise, the A was the _slightly_ better sounding guitar IMHO. I'd really like to see a Marquis with Mad RW back/sides!

    Awesome video and great comparison between the two models, best I've seen!
    I was fortunate enough to find a LEFTY Martin D28 Marquis (2012) for $3500 on eBay that I couldn't pass up. Has the adi top, EIR back/sides (no mad rw sadly), I got the last year of the fossilized ivory appointments. Do you have any tips for what to check for in these guitars as far as ensuring they're all in good shape? Is there an ideal tension/string gauge to keep them at? I read the Authentics are supposed to be 13 gauge (I use 12s but am okay with adjusting)
    Super excited to see this guitar it'll be the best box I've ever owned by a large margin with my 000-15m streetmaster either hitting the road or accompanying the rosewood/spruce with mahogany

    • @Bryankimsey
      @Bryankimsey  2 роки тому

      The difference in tension between 12's and 13's is about 15%. Any Martin D is going to be just fine with either one. Another gauge to consider and one that I personally like a lot is the "true medium" set D'Addario EJ24, GHS TM335, Elixir HD (with a .056 low e), etc.
      The single most important thing you can do is keep them at the correct humidity "most" of the time. Get a _hygrometer_ and adjust humidity from there.

    I don’t know that I can say one is absolutely better. Would have to play it myself. Some ranges sound better on one and others on the other. Since I own the Marquis I would like the two to be equal! Tgere may well be an edge to the Authentic, but it certainly isn’t there for all ranges and for the money I’m grinning. I would still like to try that Authentic, though! When I pick up my Marquis I’m not noticing it needing something it doesn’t have (other than Waverlies)!

  • @uvp5000
    @uvp5000 7 років тому

    A number of comments favor the Authentic 1937 and I agree with most of those reasons: tone, projection. I thought I observed the Marquis being a little easier to play (truss rods help a lot along with neck shape).

    • @Bryankimsey
      @Bryankimsey  7 років тому

      The Authentic has a truss rod- it's a non-adjustable rod, but relief on this one is right around .004" so that's not an issue. The neck shape definitely makes a difference, though.

    II've decided to get a Custom D-28 Marquis with 1-3/4", 2-3/16", Adirondack Top and ADi Bracing GE forward shifted , Indian Rosewood. ( instead of Madagascan ) It will have a Modified V instead of the performing artist neck. I notice you like the Modified V, so I went with the Modified V ( thankyou ) What is difference in feel of these two necks ? I think the Indian RW will be as good as the Madagasgan, just different, the top and bracing is exactly the same as the other guitar, so should pump out the bottom end sound nicely. I'll get the HD-28v custom repaired in due course, better to have a descent guitar that works than to be stressing out on repair timelines and logistics. Oh well just thought i'd tell you the good news. If I could afford it I might of gone with a 37 A, man that sounds harmonically rich and big. cheers

    About the 37 Authentic's neck.. What is the prevailing opinion here? I am considering buying a guitar with an Authentic 1937 Barrel & Heel neck, and there are no guitars in my area where I can try one out. I'm afraid it might be too big/thick. I am used to playing my 1974 D-35. Thoughts and opinions would be appreciated. (Please forgive me for hijacking the thread, that was not my intention.)

    • @Bryankimsey

      I don't think there IS a prevailing opinion. They're strange necks and if you can deal with them, they're great guitars. I could've dealt with mine but I have other guitars I like better- the Proulx OM/D was made FOR ME, after all- and so when I downsized, I cut all my Martin D's loose, including the A's.
