you can just max out the slider, rufus will only let you use as much as is available (e.g. ubuntu installer needs 8GB so it maxes out at 24GB for my 32GB USB)
Thank I have the same size USB.
Thanks, works perfect on a MacBook Air 2017
Good to hear that.
Thats my lap but is not persistent :(
what partition scheme and filsysytem did you pick? im trying to do this for my 2001 macbook with an i5 in it but i love the old mac os and everything on it you can no longer find the os anywhere or re-download it so i don't want to get rid of it.
I tried this method and everything worked until I started updating the apps. During the middle of the installation all the icons became red boxes with a cross, I though it would fix itself after the installation but then suddenly Ubuntu restarted itself ans is stuck on a loop trying to start a “snap daemon”, “thermal daemon service”, and ZSYS daemon service and it just fails and keeps looping
Try using an ssd instead of usb because usb read/write wears off when time passes. It is better to use usb for storing files that you rarely open
It's probably your USB that can't handle the write speed or the read speed. I'd consider buying a better USB or another storage device for you to install Linux, like a HDD or SSD.
@@muhammadilmanroyyan6996Flash storage does that. USB's aren't designed to support the read/write cycles that SSD's are. SSD's have a lifespan of their own, specifically with how many times they can be written to.
Sir,i was just asking,are a system administrator.
Because all your vidoes are top notch, they are very educative and information here is legit. I reallÿ love your vidoes 😊
I was an iOS Developer and linux grabbed my interest. Currently I am writing articles on Linux and videos.
Offline Job I do is: UPCOMING PEGA DEVELOPER.
And as soon you click Try again starts fresh .. 😅
Please make a tutorial on how to use Linux to make it. I think you can do it with the dd command.
didn't try with DD
I tried to follow the tutorial but when using rufus with 40gb persistant storage on 128gb usb it's extremely slow. Formating: 50.5 3-5 mins later 50.6
did you use usb 3.0?
You failed to use the Quick Format checkbox.
Not working for me. Just keeps booting into a fresh version of ubuntu 😢
Did u follow the same steps ?
@@kskroyaltech Yeah I finally got it to work but I honestly don't know what I did the second time to make a difference. Now just need to figure out how to install ROCm to use my GPU for computing.
How to transfer files between windows and flash drive ubuntu?
Im going to try today
BITLOCKER
In EU there’s a proposal for banning Open Source software!
Please add this warning on your videos as a notification to users so everyone can take action against this proposal.
you are a troll, the EU has been at war with Microsoft all these years and is demanding equality for Linux (which is an EU product)
If I use USB to enter Ubuntu OS, will there be any damage to currently running Windows OS on Hard Disk?
NOPE it won't. Thats the wonderful thing about persistence
Thanks for this tutorial, it was super helpful as I was tuck with installing in a virtual machine since my system virtualization was disabled and I've forgotten my BIOS password making me unable to enable my virtualization. God bless ur effort
For example , I'm travelling to my cousin House. I have this ive pendrive. then can I use this pendrive to use to do everything like my computer?
For 64 gb drives? How many or what is the persistent partition size?
use 48GB
@@kskroyaltech 16 gb ok ?
I’m wanting to try this on a Windows 7 laptop, is there a reason why it won’t work? In the video you say it needs Windows 10 or 11. Thanks! Great video 👍
I just want to say you do this through the bios to boot the usb drive so windows 7 shouldn't be a problem
I tried it with fedora 37
But the settings are not permanent after I reboot
very Few linux distros are supported by Rufus.
@@kskroyaltech can you suggest me something for fedora?
I want it to be persistent
Sad to see that this does not actually work :/
I will check and update a video.
can I use a 32gb usb ? i only need to use it once before permanently installing it on my laptop. Laptop is running on SSD (512) if that matters.
32gb is good enough
Can you please make a video on how to set screen lock in live usb ubuntu😢
does this also allow a user profile and password?
it's nice to have a portable install, but if it's not secure, that's risky.
can someone tell me the lifespan,or how long can a usb r/w before burning out?
@Ksk Royal
So I asked the same question to chatGPT and it replied me:
"The lifespan of a USB drive depends on several factors, such as the quality of the flash memory, the type of use, and how frequently data is written and erased. USB flash drives have a limited number of write/erase cycles, typically measured in terms of Program/Erase (P/E) cycles"
Bro i will try to install Ubuntu 22.04.4 now and I using hp 3.0 128gb pendrive and 512gb HDD
But but Rufus takes so many time in formatting
Like 16.2% in 1.41 hours 😢
Please reply
still trying to change the theme to dark
Is it just me or does the new version of Ubuntu 24.04 using this method not work
Having same issue
Need to test man
Right - you want to turn off/restart your pc, it says remove the installation medium then press enter, and it doesn't save anything you did in ubuntu whether you unplugged the usb or didn't, correct? I'm having trouble with this too!
I can't get it working with 24.04 either. I have not tried 22.04 yet, so hopefully that would work.
I'm having the same problem.
if i remove, the usb drive and restart my laptop, my laptop will go back to its original state with its windows OS and all the existing files which were originally on it right ? if so, are there any instructions i could follow ?
does this also permanently install ubuntu onto my laptop, or does it only exist in the USB drive
You are running ubuntu in persistent mode via USB. When you plug the USB Drive, you can boot ubuntu from it and use it like a normal way. its like portable ubuntu.
Off course when you eject the USB drive and restart your laptop it should boot back to windows or default OS installed on the internal drive.
Will i be able to install apps and use them afterwards? For example, if I install blender will it be there after a reboot? Will it access to the gpu and everything without problem?
Yes that what's the persistent meant to be right ..
Thank you this method worked perfectly with linux mint as its based on ubuntu 22.04 but i have a question: Is there any way to update the os version of the persistant installation or will I have to save my data and reinstall linux? If the solution works on ubuntu it should work on mint. Any help is appreaciated.
I guess, You can run update command it should maintain the persistence
@@kskroyaltech Thank You, i'll try when mint 21.2 comes out
@No_Name not yeat as there isnt an update for me to try yet.
@No_Name i think there should be a way for fix that issue as many people use a 144hz display but for me running linux on a 4 year old laptop it seems to work fine.
@@TAmzid2872Did it work?
Bro Thank You very Much... Your Instructions was exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks for the awesome vid. If I include a partition for persistent storage, can I keep files there that I can access from any computer (without booting from the USB)?.
For instance, if I stick the USB into a printer, would it still recognize the persistent partition as a regular folder from the USB while ignoring the bootable partition?
Hey hey hey, guess what buddy! Only one way to know for sure! So, did ya try it?
@@EpicBunty As a matter of fact...it worked! The printer is usually programmed to recognize storage partitions (not bootable partitions).
can we use it for learning linux ,will it work properly? can we use dockers in it ?
Absolutely why not
Friends, after the installation is completed, I remove the USB and press the enter button, then the PC turns off and on and this continues, I wonder what is the problem?
Followed through all steps, changes done to the system vanished, just like EU's fundings.
Thanks for the info, Is there any way to separate Windows files or deny the access while using Ubuntu?
Thanks. unfortunatly i dont have Bitlocker option :(
Hello
I am using a 64gb (usb 3.1 )pendrive and seems ok after installation, but it's lagging a little bit. I also installed some applications and slower than installation on VirtualBox. Can you help what can i do to speed up?
I guess your pendrive is not supporting a faster IO speeds.
Is there any application for Linux to create persistence USB like this?
Probably DD Command.
Can we install softwares such as gnukatha in this persistent ubuntu
I didn't that software but yeah most software work just fine.
Hi, I installed Ubuntu as the vedio, but I don't know the root password. Could you tell me?
try ubuntu or just press enter leaving blank
Try "root"
you are amazingggg, thank you so much for this video!
sir i am using 16 gb usb so is it possible to use that, and also what will happen if i use all the persistent partition size
Does this work with a partitioned drive of a Flash drive. Or will it format all of that flash drives partitions?
Honestly id just buy a usb theyre cheap, if yor talking about an integrated drive then you should be doing dual-boot not this
so you never actually installed it , you are using this as a LIVE USB with persistent storage?
YEP exactly.
Is it possible to do this on linux, not windows?
How to copy files and data from the pen drive to laptop after using it
hey bro i am in serious trouble plzz tell that if once i entered into the ventoy menu then how can i exit back to my pc's original boot menu i press f6 but it prompts press enter but all in vain i am using win 10 pzz help me if anyone available!
Force Turn off your PC first. Remove the Ventory DRIVE if connected and turn on your PC to boot into windows 10.
why it's not possible with 32Go Usb drive ? And if it's possible, how much storage should I leave for the system?
Its possible .. You can use 16GB of Free space with persistence.
I am new in this linux world. Can someone please tell me if, after boot up my computer, using USB, and "install" ubuntu, will windows be erased? Or is like having ubuntu in my pen-drive like virtual machine?
Yes it will be erased,. In something else option, it only showed SSD partition for me.
Does anyone experiencing slow and unusable os? When I use Ubuntu from non persistence it is super fast but with run persistence it is awfully slow to the point that it's unusable.
Note that I'm using a KINGSTON DTXM/64GB 3.2 Gen 2 and only using 41gb of persistence
Pluged into my 3.0 port
Have you figured out how to fix this? Its unbearably slow for no reason. Usb 3.1 and it takes 30s to open firefox
@@mangorango1458 The USB 3.1 or 3.0 port won't be the limiting factor here. For example, the KINGSTON DTXM/64GB 3.2 Gen 2 only has a read speed of 30 MB/s whereas typical SSDs have speeds of 550 MB/s. Try testing out the speed of your drive by copying a large file to it. Using a drive with faster IO processes will likely fix your issue if there is no other bottleneck.
i dont think its about port speed. @@jsab16
Your USB Disk is guilty. The fact that it is 3.2 Gen 2 doesn't mean anything, it can still have very bad speeds.
Lame how people can do better and most of all it works is all i WILL say !
Bro, can we upgrade ubuntu 14.04 to 22.04 directly
Don't do that.
@@kskroyaltech why bro?,then how
I don't think so older ubuntu versions work with persistence storage. But anyway give a try
3:00 incase ur lazier then me, msinfo32
I followed the directions, except I used Ubuntu Studio. I did everything else the same, and I tried saving items to the desktop, and nothing saved. I'm not sure why it wasn't persistent, do you have any idea why?
Try with Ubuntu GNOME.
I used mkusb instead of Rufus. Thanks!
Does it work on Chromebook?
thx
Only seems to work with usb 2.0 port. Any idea why not usb 3?
24.04 Is having issues bro currently. Waiting for point release.
I tried Linux Mint in this manner and the changes were not saved. I will try again.
Only Few Distros Work with this Method.
Bro I am having trouble while power off its print some line and then just pause system doesn't shut down i have to manually hold the power button on my laptop to shut it down. Pls help what to do
Any way to remove this?
Detach it from the computer.
can i make exfat pendrive to bootable persisitance pendrive
I don't think so it will work
tysm for this video quick question how do i install apps normally or through the terminal
Just the like the way you do normally
whats the problem with installing a linux system onto a usb stick using iso image and VirtualBox ? why run around with sticks and drums if you can make it alot easier
For 64 gb drives? How many or what is the persistent partition size?
allocate 48GB for persistency
Will this work if I use a flashdrive with only 16gb? 🥺😭
Yes give a try
Thx for the video, I did all the steps but my trackpad and keyboard don’t work :/ I’m on a MacBook Air 2020
It wont work with Mac's .. Try dual booting ..Watch this video - ua-cam.com/video/KIgxEEzT9ek/v-deo.html
Amazing!! please how can i use this from my Chromebook,

It is suddenly not detecting my wireless keyboard and mouse, any idea how to fix this?
try to connect wireless Keyboard and Mouse Dongle to USB 2.0 Only.
@@kskroyaltech my laptop has 2 USB ports - both are not usb 2.0 if I'm not wrong.
Thank u bro I was waiting
This is not for beginners. I have the flash drive I just want to see how to use it.
But I made it easy to follow.
Thx man you re the best
Fedora 37 is out☺️ . What you think 💭 .
I didnt try stable yet bro
its woking on mac book pro
but not saving
But you will loose persistence after rebooting again everything will be new.
Plz tell me about the operational speed
Is the speed just like of ubuntu installed on an external hard drive ?
When SSD (ubuntu bootable ) is connected to USB 3 port, it just provides the same performance like internal drives. But when installing packages it will take some time.
Can I do this with an older version of Ubuntu?
Yes
what are the packages you are installing? Do i need internet to be on while installing them?
Yes you need internet to install any package, it downloads from repository hosted on a remote server.
@@kskroyaltech ohkay thanks
Thank you so much!
Is it only for pc? Doesn't work for old mac pro notebook?
It work on windows , Mac and linux. If your MacBook Pro is not having lesser than 7th gen intel then it should work well.
Bro can u pls make video on how to use UBUNTU from USB drive in MAC M1?
It wont work
@@kskroyaltech ook thank you bro
if i create and save any file after restarting i can see it at same place right ?
YES
thank you sir
will 32 gb pendrive work fine?
Give a try
will this work for linux mint?
Give a try
It worked for me once (with safe graphics) but otherwise I get some EXT4-fs errors on startup... Any help? USB stick seems to be ok...
Got it. This is because the installer doesn't have a valid graphic drivers compatible with your hardware. After booting into ubuntu with SAFE Graphics , install graphic drivers with this command:
*sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall*
Thanks for answer! I tried couple of times to update/upgrade/install stuff but it seems to corrupt the USB and won't restart anymore... @@kskroyaltech
Great video!
Thank you so much
It works 🎉. Thanks
You're welcome!
How many persistent partition size i need if i have 250gb hard drive?
75% ..
For example if the hard drive is 250GB
then 250GB / 100 * 75 = 187 GB
@@kskroyaltech thank you
Im using ventoy?
Ventoy is used to boot ubuntu installer thats it. I cannot hold the persistency .
Thanks for the video, the method is helpful. The installation went smooth, I am using a 128gbs USB 3.0 with 150 MB/s reading speed. I am also using then SS USB port on my laptop. However, installing packages and/or running "sudo install upgrade" is painfully slow, the latter took more than 3 hours to finish. Is there a way to speed this up?
Also, after booting the OS 3-4 times it crashed completely. The background turned blue, the icons disappeared from the desktop, and nothing except the power off function would respond. Do you have any idea what could be the reason?
Yeah , even I had the same issue. the packages take longer. instead of apt use Nala.
after installing new apps or packages the USB boot takes ages to boot or may crash.
I am finding a way .
@@kskroyaltech did you find it?
@@kskroyaltech i did the same as you said.. But didnt update it nothing but the usb would heat soon and would start crashing? Any help is appreciated
@@sssatan I concur. I use usb stick for tails OS, portable SSD for Ubuntu and of course I still love windows so much.
You need a better usb stick, try with SanDisk extreme pro 128gb
great man!
Is any way to write iso on hdd using this metod on linux? Is any way to do it on linux. I have empty hdd and linux runing on another hdd. I want to make ubuntu on this empty drive just your method. Can I do it without pendrive?
I have windows but Rufus doesn't show mine hdd as USB storage to hav acess write image on this.
how to activate User login?
Watch a Ubuntu tutorial
Is there any catch?
Like ?
@@kskroyaltech I think he meant any main differences from the full PC install of Ubuntu
usbs aren't meant to read/write as a daily driver like this. higher likelihood to just fail. but the convenience factor to be able to plug in wherever and have everything can be worth it to you. as long as you're doing backups regularly, so you don't lose information then don't worry about it
doesn't work for me
rufus not exists in linux...
Yes it wont work on linux. Only Windows
How to back windows
Turn Off .. Detach the USB storage and tun on your computer to boot into windows automatically.
