I went to Tee Pee Canyon several times and there’s always that one that was too big to haul back. I finally broke down and bought a cordless DeWalt hammer drill and a good star punch. The next time I went out, that nodule went home with me without all the excessive garbage hanging on to it. I sliced it up and got full slabs without any cracks. If you do get a hammer drill, get at least 2 extra batteries. And make sure they’re charged.
I was just there and hunted for teepee canyon agates. I wish I would have see this video prior. I would have loved to take the drive and probably had better luck finding agates. I actually ended up buying a teepee canyon agate from The Rock Shop in town. Super nice people.
You are in some prime territory for rockhounding then! In the immediate area around keystone, there are a wide variety of minerals; the easiest finds would be the rose quartz and schist containing garnet. To find the garnet, look for the grey reflective rocks, those are the schist and they contain garnet in varying sizes but the black hills have VERY high quality garnet. Rose quartz and iron quartz is also abundant in the area, and the best way to find them is to search for quartz seams and pegmatites. It is generally buried so you may try digging in the soil to find bigger pieces. If you are okay with a bit of driving, the teepee canyon gate site is just several miles outside of Custer. Also, there is a massive variety of prairie agates and jasper around the badlands outside of rapid city; just make sure you are not in national park land or native American reservations, as it is illegal to collect in those areas. For more specific tips, I would HIGHLY recommend stopping by the Rock shed in keystone. They are the best rock shop I have ever found and it's run by EXTREMELY nice people, and I am sure they could give you some more specific tips on tactics and locations. I hope this information helps!
I was just in the black hills with my daughter and tried really hard tip find this spot. Did not find any helpful people. I hope top go back some time in the near future, do you have any tips? We still found a lot of cool rocks.
People definitely try to hide this site, so the locals are very unlikely to share directions, understandably, and it is almost impossible to find directions online, and to make matters worse, the road is pretty much not marked at all. The best tip I can give to find it reliably would be the falcon guide, rockhounding Wyoming. That book has an entire section of the black hills of south Dakota and gives precise directions to the teepee canyon site, as well as to several others in the area! I absolutely could never locate the site before I got that book; it is very well hidden! I hope this helps! 😊
You can go by Railroad Buttes to find Fairburn agate. Whatever you do.....DO NOT get off the road to try turning around. The ground may look dry, but down a couple inches it’s that thick mud. I learned from experience. Always carry a couple shovels with you. Also around French Creek you can find a great deal of rocks that want to go home with you. I camped out there a couple times. I also found gold in the creek with my metal detector. Enjoy
Sorry Theo but the camera moved so fast the first part was not very enjoyable. I still like though and usually like your vids. That road looked like a real hoot to drive. Havagudun my friend.
No hard feelings E. D.! Let's just say I have gotten better at remembering that the camera should not move as fast as I am walking, and to just slow down while I'm recording. Unfortunately, this was a problem in a lot of my early videos, but I hope it has improved since. I greatly appreciate your feedback! It helps me improve my videos so that they are more enjoyable for all! 😊
